{Chapter 3 ~ A Certain Book}
James Potter. I carefully took the old tattered book out of the shelf. I slowly opened the cover and gasped quietly. The first chapter was titled, 'Old Spells for Time Travel'. I checked to see if Hermione was looking for me but she was engrossed in a book called 'Wands, Through Place and Time'. I looked down at the book again and admired my father's messy handwriting. But there was no time to read the book now, I would have to bring it with me and read it tonight. But how? I wondered, my brain blank. Then I remember Hermione telling me something about an invisibility spell. I tried to remember it, was it invisibol exponiti? Or was it invisibili exponentia? I decided to try the second one, what could go wrong?
"Invisibilis Exponentia!" I whispered.
I held my breath, did it work? Suddenly the book disappeared from my hands. But it didn't just disappear, I was the only one who could see it. I smiled and carried the book behind my back as I sneaked out of the restricted area.
"Harry there you are! Where were you! We've been looking for you for the past ten minutes," Hermione came up behind me.
"Oh hey Hermione, I was just over there," I pointed to behind one of the book shelves.
"But we looked there already, anyway that doesn't matter. Look what I found! Well, Ron actually found the book but I found this chapter on the Elder Wand!" Hermione started excitedly holding up a book called 'The Secrets a Wand can Possess'.
I stopped her, "No, we can't talk here, there are too many people. Lets bring the book back to the tunnel in the painting."
"Bu-but," Hermione protested.
"No buts, now let's hurry," I said firmly.
We got to the tunnel without anyone noticing us, and I still had the book I secretly stole behind my back.
"Okay, let's see it now," I said.
Hermione pulled the book out and opened the front cover.
"The Elder Wand, Long Lost Secrets," Ron read out loud.
"The Elder Wand was originally created by 'Death', as read in the tale of The Three Brothers," Hermione said.
"However, you can't own the Elder Wand unless you have killed, or disarmed the original owner," she continued.
"This is boring, where's the information we need?" Ron complained.
"Be patient Ron," Hermione scolded.
She skipped a few pages until she came across the subheading, 'Immortalised' and stopped to read out loud.
"The Elder Wand was created with the most powerful dark magic imaginable: Death. Therefore, it makes this wand indestructible. If someone attempts to break it or destroy it, for the next two months they will be cursed. Cursed to have bad luck every second day. The Elder Wand will be attracted to the person who tried to break or destroy it and will also stick with them for the next two months when they're cursed. If someone attempts to break it and succeeds, (never been completed before) the Elder Wand will magically mend itself together again."
I took a deep breath shakily.
"Wait, look at this," Ron pointed to the bottom of the page.
There was tiny writing down the bottom that had faded slightly. I squinted trying to make out what it said. After about three I gave up, my eyes hurting from straining them for so long.
"Hang on, I think I remember a spell that enlarges things," Hermione thought for a few seconds then announced, "Engorgio!"
Suddenly the writing on the page started growing and growing until it almost covered the whole page.
"You are a genius Hermione!" Ron exclaimed, as she blushed.
"Those who are chosen can break this curse and destroy it forever. In doing so the Elder Wand will cease to exist," I read out loud.
"Who's the chosen one then?" Ron asked stupidly.
"Duh, you muggle! It's Harry!" Hermione exclaimed like it was obvious to anyone.
"But how do I break the spell? It's not like I'm still a Horcrux," I said.
"I'll have to look it up in the library tonight. I'll meet you guys at The Burrow tomorrow morning at nine thirty," she said.
"Typical, the library," Ron emphasised on the word library with disgust.
"Ron! Where did we get this book from again? Oh, the library!" Hermione scolded.
"Whatever, come on Harry," he grunted, walking away.
"Bye Hermione, hope you find something," I said, following Ron.
I heard her sigh as Ron and I walked out.
When we got to the tunnels I told Ron to go ahead and waited for his footsteps to fade away. I opened the front cover of the book. The first page was decorated intricately with black swirls along the border.
Old Spells for Time Travel, I read.
Congratulations on finding this book! These spells were gathered while time travelling, which means these spells can be dangerous when used improperly. If used properly the outcome should be successful in what you are trying to cast. I dedicate this book to Lily and Harry Potter my wife and my son.
I clutched the book tightly, the dedication was to me. I know my father wasn't the best student at Hogwarts, but he was the best father in the world. I closed the book, cast the invisibility spell and ran to catch up with Ron, I would read the rest of the chapter later.
"Harry! Harry come quick!" I heard Ron's voice shouting to me as I got nearer to the entrance of the painting.
"I'm coming, what happened?" I asked as I arrived.
I gasped as I saw Ginny lying on the floor.
