Chapter 9 Bridges, Balrogs and Kazad-Dûm

Harry ran as fast as he could out of Balin's tomb following Gandalf as they ran through Dwarrowdelf "Hadrid!" Aragorn shouted as they ran and weaved through the columns, Harry could hear the orcs coming "How did you know that spell?"
"I found a parchment!" He yelled back, making up a story as he ran "In a lake!" Then Harry made the mistake of looking behind him, thousands of orcs were bearing down on them baying for blood.
"This way!" Gandalf shouted, turning suddenly and sharply and the rest of the fellowship followed, orcs erupted from holes in the floor and ceilings and blocking off all roots of escape as the joined the now 10,000 strong Orc pack, it seemed as if every Orc or goblin in Moria was after them. The orcs were gaining on them and soon the fellowship were forced to a halt since the orcs had form a ring around them and there was no possible way to escape, the company formed a ring as well sticking there weapons out like a hedgehog's spines in a desperate bid to protect themselves, suddenly a large roar echoed through the columns the orcs turned in surprise in the direction of the noise, a large arch of a door at the end of the corridor burned a fiery orange colour and to Harry's amazement the orcs fled the scene they crawled back down their holes letting out terrified screams.
The Fellowship stayed in the kill circle, facing the fiery glow "What is this new devilry?" Boromir whispered apprehensively to Gandalf who was looking very anxious and worried.
Gandalf screwed his eyes shut as if he was thinking but Harry was focusing on the loud fast approaching bangs and the glow slowly creeping further and further towards them "A Balrog," said Gandalf opening his eyes "A demon of the ancient world, this foe is beyond any of you, run!" Harry was more than glad to respond to Gandalf's order, they ran like the wind through the columns spurred on by a loud "Quickly!" From Gandalf they ran through a low doorway and Boromir almost pitched off the edge of a flight of stairs and into a deep ravine had Legolas not pulled him to safety, the whole group stopped at the stairs none of them a fan of falling down ravines "Lead them on Aragorn," said Gandalf quickly "The bridge is near," Gandalf nodded to a narrow stone bridge not too far away from their position, Aragorn opened his mouth to protest "Do as I say!" Ordered Gandalf "Sword are no more use here."
The Fellowship hurriedly ran down another narrow, steep flight of stairs that twisted and turned down the ravine but they could not continue with their pace because a large crevice had opened up in the stair, Legolas sprang over the large gap, dust began to fall from the ceiling and the red glow appeared in the doorway.
"Gandalf!" Called Legolas, Gandalf jumped the gap and then an arrow ripped through the air and glanced of Boromir's shield, hails of arrows rained down on the fellowship, Legolas returning a few shots along with Aragorn, Harry winced as one of Legolas's arrows pierced the head of an orcan archer who fell down the ravine.
"Merry!" Shouted Boromir "Pippin!" He grabbed the two hobbits and kept across the gap and the very part of the staircase he was standing on crumbled into the ravine, now the gap was even larger.
"Sam!" Called Aragorn, Aragorn picked Sam up as if he was a baby and threw him over the gap who was caught by Boromir, Aragorn turned to Gimli.
"Nobody tosses a Dwarf," growled Gimli.
"Don't blame us if you fall then," Harry responded as Gimli leapt over the gap only to slip and have his beard seized by Legolas.
"Not the beard!" He screamed, mortified as Legolas heaved him to safety, the gap crumbled even more leaving Aragorn, Harry and Frodo quite far away from the others, another part of it crumbled under Aragorn's feet but Harry caught his hand as he fell and pulled him up.
The stairs shook as the Balrog got even closer "Steady," said Aragorn through gritted teeth "Hold on!" He shouted as parts of the ceiling crumbled, the stairs were crumbling around them, Aragorn gripped Frodo and threw themselves over leaving only Harry.
"Come on Hadrid!" Shouted Legolas from the other side, the stairs wobbled from underneath Harry, the whole part of Harry's side of the staircase separated from its supports and teetered like an unbalanced scale.
"Lean forward!" Commanded Aragorn to Harry, Harry leant forward and slowly the staircase began to lean with him "Steady!" Called Aragorn and just before the staircases crashed into each other  Harry jumped and landed on the other side and immediately started running.
"Come on!" He shouted behind him, the fellowship sprinted down the rest of the staircase as it crumbled behind them.
"Over the bridge!" Shouted Gandalf at the edge of the bridge, the whole corridor bathed in light "Fly! Fly!" He urged as they ran over the bridge, he watched them all speed past him as he stopped at the edge, suddenly a silhouette appeared in the fires that had sprang up in front of him and then the Balrog appeared. Harry clamped a hand over his mouth to contain a scream of terror, the Balrog seemed to be made out of lava itself, it's black skin shone with lava, flames ran all over its body and over its large bat wings, its curved horns curled down the side of its face like a wreath and its eyes were fire. The Balrog roared a challenge before it marched after them towards the bridge, even Gandalf and Legolas were midgets compared to the demon but Harry had no time to appreciate it as the fellowship tore over the narrow stone bridge all except Gandalf, he remained in the centre of the bridge, waiting for the Balrog. Harry turned and watched in horror as the Balrog and the Grey Wizard stared each other down "You cannot pass!" Roared Gandalf at the demon.
"Gandalf!" Screamed Frodo.
The Balrog raised itself up to its full night and lit its whole body on fire "I am a servant of the Secret Fire," Gandalf growled "Weilder of the flame of Anor," Gandalf raised his staff and a shimmering light surrounded him, a magical shield, as the Balrog tried to swat the wizard away but to no avail "The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udûn!" Gandalf cried, the Balrog drew a fiery sword from its back, a ten foot long spike of fire was brought down on Gandalf's shield as the Balrog roared in anger, Gandalf groaned with the effort of keeping the shield up, the fire sword flew out of the Balrog's hands and down the ravine. The Balrog roared at Gandalf in rage, Gandalf's shield flickered away "Go back to the shadow," Gandalf growled with such venom that Harry was surprised, the Balrog set one fiery foot on the bridge and drew out a long fiery whip and swirled it around its head as an act to get Gandalf to back down, Gandalf did not back down. Staff in one hand, sword in the other Gandalf raised the two high above his head "You shall not pass!" He roared, he slammed the butt of his staff into the stone of the bridge and a screen of magical energy streamed over the bridge and nothing happened, the Balrog put his second foot on the bridge and then the bridge crumbled beneath the demon's feet, the Balrog screamed as it fell down the large ravine and into the abyss, Gandalf watched the demon disappear into the darkness with a grim satisfaction, Gandalf turned to walk away but the Balrog was not done yet, the fiery whip flicked upwards towards the remains of the bridge and caught Gandalf's legs he let go of his staff and sword in surprise, the sword cascaded down the ravine but the staff flew forwards, towards Harry's feet, the whip pulled Gandalf's legs away from underneath him and dragged him to the edge of the bridge, Gandalf was left hanging above the ravine with only the tips of his fingers, Frodo ran forwards only to be seized by Boromir.
"Gandalf!" Frodo screamed, Harry shoved Boromir out of the way and picked up the staff, he ran to Gandalf who had pulled his head onto the bridge along with his arms.
The whip tugged on his legs pulling him further back "Fly you fools!" Gandalf croaked before letting go, and Gandalf the Grey disappeared over the edge of the Bridge of Kazad-dûm.
"No!" Screamed Harry who had just reached the where Gandalf had stood moments before, Harry screamed and fought as Aragorn dragged him away from the bridge as did Frodo.
"Aragorn!" Screamed Boromir as he wrestled the screaming Frodo, Aragorn followed dragging Harry who still hold Gandalf's staff, he would never let go of it, arrows flew past their heads as Aragorn dragged Harry through the exit.
The Fellowship stood outside the mines, the hobbits were in a terrible state and Boromir still had to restrain Frodo from going back in, Harry sat on a rock tears racing each other down his nose he still held onto the staff that was once Gandalf's, Aragorn had tried  to prize it from his hands but Harry refused to let go of the staff, "Legolas," Harry heard Aragorn say "Get them up," Legolas didn't look to happy about that order.
"Give them a moment for pity's sake," protested Boromir.
"By nightfall these hills will be swarming with orcs," Aragorn shot back "We must get to the woods of Lothlórien."
Boromir looked rather defeated after that "He's right," muttered Harry, picking himself up off the rock and holding Gandalf's staff in his left hand "To Lothlórien."
