Picture Perfect
Shock. Two children? Twins? I pulled my eyes away from the screen to look at the Joker. He was staring impassively at the projection of the two babies. I returned my gaze back to look at them. It was...beautiful.
"No, I...I didn't know we were having twins." I managed. Dr Whittington smiled.
"So this is your first checkup?" I nodded. "Ok there are some things I need to give you and some things I need to warn you about after this. Do you know the genders of your children yet?" I shook my head, still glued to our children's image. "Well I can say that one of them is a boy. The other...I can't really tell but it might be a girl. We will know for sure in about two weeks. Alright, I can print out the ultrasound for you to take if you'd like...?"
"That would be great. Thanks." She pressed a few buttons and turned the machine off. She passed me a wipe and I took the gel off my stomach. It was such a strange experience, all of this.
"Ok so we can't give you the folic acid supplements because it's too late for that. But it's fine, your babies spines look perfectly healthy from the ultrasound." She turned back to me. "You do understand the basics of a healthy pregnancy, right? No alcohol, a good diet, some exercise like walking, no smoking, no drugs, nothing that could harm the baby, or in your case, babies." I nodded. As soon as she had said 'no alcohol' I understood why the Joker had been so adamant that I should not drink. He had known. I sat up and pulled down my shirt. A printer beeped and Dr Whittington reached over and grabbed the picture of the ultrasound out and handed it to me.
"Thanks. Is that all I need to know?" She smiled.
"Yes. Come check up every week, ok? We can book a time for..." She rolled her chair over to her desk and flipped through the pages of a notebook on it. "Friday at 11 if that's ok with you?"
"That would be great, thanks." I hopped up and smiled, still clutching the picture of our children. She smiled, and led us back into the waiting room. Another mother had joined the queue, and I almost heard her gasp as we came out.
"Next patient?"
I grabbed the Joker's hand and we walked down the hall, the pretty blonde woman with the snarling, green haired man.
I couldn't help feeling absurdly happy, ecstatic that I had two healthy babies in me right now. With the person I loved most in the world, as well. I brought a hand to my stomach as we walked over to the car, and looked at the picture in my other hand. They were inside me. My own children. I grinned, and climbed into the car. The Joker was impassive, as usual. Right now maybe he didn't share my joy, but he would later. When they were born and when he looked at them, surely he would fall in love as easily as I had just then.
