Fresh

I woke up to sunlight, liquid gold streaming through the wall-sized window next to my bed. For a second, it was just another day. Then I remembered what had happened in the night, and shuffled down further under the covers. I was pregnant. That was the thing in red letters in my mind. There was a living being growing inside of me.

I sighed, and crawled out of the white duvet, planting both feet firmly on the ground. Today would be the last of secrets. I picked out some clothes, a plain white tee-shirt and blue jeans, then walked out and into the lounge. The Joker was sitting there, apparently asleep.

"J, let's go." I shook him awake, and his head snapped up. He stared at me for a second, then stood.

"What's happening?"

"We're going to the hospital."

"Why?" He was frowning, looking at me as if I was mad.

"We're going to get an ultrasound." He raised his eyebrows, then nodded.

"Let's go then."

---

The car trip was short, seeing as the Joker was driving wildly. Maybe even he was excited to see the baby for the very first time. But seeing the baby wasn't the only reason I was going there. I hadn't been experiencing any morning sickness, and there was no bump. Well, maybe I was a tiny bit bigger but that could also just be my imagination. Was there something wrong with the pregnancy? Was there something wrong with me? Did the bleach do something to me?

"Come on." The Joker turned off the exhaust and looked over at me, his ear piercing sparkling. For a second I saw him through an outsiders eyes, his bright green hair, red lips and pale skin. And those eyes of course.

"They're gonna be scared, J. Scared of us." He cracked his neck, then stared out at the hospital doors.

"And they'll do what we say as well. I'll make sure of it." I flinched. For once I didn't want any bloodshed, not when we were in a hospital trying to see our baby for the first time.

"No. We go in and we ask politely. I know we look...just a tiny, tiny bit weird but they'll do the test. We're in a hospital for god's sake." He didn't say anything, and we exited the car, an insane looking couple. We made our way up into the hospital.

The place was organised chaos. People were rushing around, white coats flapping around the doctors who were scurrying around. And there was the  unmistakeable antibacterial smell of a hospital. We approached the front desk. The woman looked up, stared for a second, then smiled half heartedly. I leaned forward and tapped my fingers on the counter.

"Uh, we're looking for the place to have an ultrasound. The pregnancy place?" The lady blinked. Beth, said her name tag.

"I think I know what you mean. Come this way." She shot a warning look at the Joker, as if to say that he wasn't allowed to cause trouble, and the Joker glared back at her and bared his teeth. She looked away quickly and motioned for us to come with her down the hall.

---

The doctors waiting room already had two women sitting there, reading a magazine. They looked up and stared as we entered.

"Right then. This is it. You can wait here and Dr Whittington will be out soon." The nurse left as quickly as she came, and I stood awkwardly, the Joker behind me.

"Hey!" I attempted to be cheery, but the two women just stared, a platinum blonde and a dark haired, red cheeked woman, their hands folded protectively over their bulging bellies. I watched their eyes trailed down to my stomach...where there was nothing. I tossed my head and passed them, going into the office myself.

"You aren't allowed to-"

"We've been waiting here! Get in line." The disgust was clear through the blonde lady's voice. Obviously she thought of us as a weird, crazy couple. I turned quickly and made my way over to the thin lipped woman.

"I don't know if you know who we are, but you probably don't want to. So for the safety of you, and your child, shut up. Ok?" The woman gasped, her mouth wide open. "Ok?" I repeated, glaring at her. She shut her mouth and nodded twice.

"Good then." I straightened up, just as the door to the office opened, and a woman with short mousy brown hair wearing regulation blue hospital gear stepped out in front of a pregnant asian lady. She beamed, looking around at us, not even flinching when she saw the Joker and I.

"Right then. Who's next?" I walked forward, into the office, grabbing the Joker's hand and pulling him in after me.

"That would be me." I called. She raised her eyebrows as she watched us enter, then followed us in.

"So what are you looking for? How long are you in?"

"I'm 4 months in. 16 weeks. And I still haven't had morning sickness, and there's also no bump. Well, I haven't been paying really any attention. Maybe I am a bit bigger?"

"Ok, we'll answer all of those questions today. Sit down. Do you mind me taking a look?" I shook my head and sat down on the hospital bed. Dr Whittington rolled her chair over to me and lifted my shirt up.

"For many first pregnancies the bump doesn't show until around about now. But...you do have a bump about the size of an avocado, that's quite normal, and it should grow quite a bit in the next few weeks. Now about the morning sickness, that is perfectly fine as well, some mothers are lucky enough to never experience morning sickness! But if you really are worried we could take a look at the baby?" I nodded.

"Right then. If you could just lie down for me please? Yes that's perfect. Ok then, hold still for a second while I get this going." She snapped on a glove and pulled over a white machine with a black screen, then lifted my top up just below my bra.

"Ok, I'm just going to squeeze this gel onto your stomach. It helps with the ultrasound." The gel came out bright blue, and she grabbed a device that was connected to the machine by a long white cord. She placed it on the gel, then spread it around.

Instantly an image appeared on the screen. I inhaled sharply.

"Oh! You have twins! Did you know that?"
