CHAPTER 138
When Lakshman had been entrusted with with the guardianship of the door, Shri Ram asked the ascetic to tell what he wished to communicate.
Kaal gave his true introduction to Shri Ram and told how he was his son in a previous existence and had been created by his Maya. He told that Brahma has sent him to inform that the time Shri Ram had set for his avatar, which was ten thousand was over.
Brahma had also said that if Shri Ram still wishes to serve his subjects, then, by all means, he can. On the other hand, if he desires to regain the world of the gods, then he's free to do it as well.
When Shri Ram had heard the words that Brahma had spoken, just as they were reported by Kaal, he smiled, it was a chance to once again see his dear Sitey and Ramey, who were always on his mind.
"Jaanta hu. Kaal, tum bhi yaha meri iccha se aaye ho. Mai wahi laut jaayunga jaha se mai aya hu. Mere man mei koi shanka nahi." Shri Ram said.
He knew he must attend to all the needs of the gods, who are his obedient subjects.
As the two were conversing in this fashion, the holy seer Durvasa arrived at the king’s gate, anxious to see Shri Ram, but he was stopped by Lakshman.
"Mujhe iss hi kshan Ram se milna hai, anyatha mere aane ka udeshya bhang ho jayega !" Durvasa Rishi said.
"Rishivar, paramgyaani, mujhe batayiye aapko kya chahiye ? Kis udeshya se aap yaha aaye hai ? Shri Ram abhi vyast hai. Aap apni sewa ka avsar mujhe de, anyatha kuch samaye pratiksha karle." Lakshman said respectfully.
When that tiger among seers had heard this, he began choking with rage.
"Soumitri ! Ram ko iss hi kshan suchna do mere aagman ka ! Anyatha mai tumhe, tumhare iss Rajya ko, tumhare iss nagar ko, Ram ko, Bharat ko aur jo koi bhi tumhare vansh ka hai, unn sabko shraap dedunga ! Mujhse mera Krodh roka nahi jaa raha ab !" Durvasa Rishi threatened.
When Lakṣman had heard those terrifying words of the great seer, he reflected in his mind on their import. The entire destruction of Raghukul and Kosal shall happen if Shri Ram is not informed. But if he does go inside and inform his brother, then he'll get death penalty.
A small sad smile appeared on the face of Lakshman, perhaps this was meant to be.
"Yadi mrityu aani hai toh keval mujhe aaye. Kripya anya sabhi ka naash na ho." Lakshman said.
He went inside, Shri Ram had just finished talking to Kaal, Lakshman told him about the arrival of Rishi Durvasa, Shri Ram dimissed Kaal, and quickly rushed out to the service of the great sage.
"Pranaam Rishivar, batayiye mai aapki kya sewa kar sakta hu ?" Shri Ram asked humbly.
"Suno dharmparayan Samrat, aaj ke din mera 1000 varsho se kiya huya vrat sampann huya hai, mai chaahta hu tumhare jaisa nishpaap vyakti, mujhe bhojan karaye." Durvasa Rishi said.
When Shri Ram heard those words, he was filled with great delight, and he brought that foremost of sages some freshly prepared food.
Once Rishi Durvasa had eaten that food, which was like the nectar of immortality, he returned to his ashram. Shri Ram was at first delighted at heart, but then, when he recalled Kaal's words.
He was stricken with grief, when he remembered that thing which was too dreadful to contemplate, he was greatly afflicted by grief. His face downcast and his mind distressed, he was unable to speak.
He then contemplated it all to be fate.
"Antim samaye agaya hai." He muttered, and fell silent.
Now, when Lakshman saw Shri Ram despondent, with his face downcast, like the moon in eclipse, he remained cheerful, spoke to him in sweet words.
"Bhaiya, mere karan aap nirash na ho. Yeh toh niyati ka woh khel hai, jise badla nahi jaa sakta. Mujhe vachan dijiye Bhrata, ki aap bina kisi shok ke mujhe mrityu dand denge. Yadi aap mujhse prem karte hai bhaiya, toh bina kisi sankoch ke mera vadh kar dijiye." Lakshman said.
Addressed in this fashion by Lakshman, Shri Ram with his senses reeling, assembled his counselors and in their midst told them about the arrival of Durvasa and the promise he had made to the ascetic, just as it had all taken place.
When his counselors, along with
his preceptors, had heard that, they kept still, but Vasisth spoke up.
"Ram, yeh sab toh pehle se hi nirdharit hai. Lakshman ka tyaag kardo aur apne vachan ka palan Karo. Kyu ki jaha vachano ka palan nahi hota waha dharm ki haani hoti hai." Vasisth said.
When Shri Ram had heard those words, which were fully in keeping with both righteousness and statecraft, he gazed at Lakshman.
"Dharm ki haani mai hone nahi de sakta. Iss liye Lakshman, mai tumhe desh-nikala deta hu, kyuki mrityu ho ya nirvaasan, dharmatma ke liye dono ek samaan hai." Shri Ram said.
No sooner had these words been uttered by Shri Ram than Lakshman, his eyes clouded with tears, departed swiftly.
Proceeding to the bank of the Sarayu River, he ritually sipped its water and then, cupping his hands in reverence, he closed off his senses and held his breath.
Then all the gods, together with Indra, the troupes of apsaras, and the hosts of seers, showered him with flowers as
he sat there absorbed in yog, not breathing.
And in such a way that no man witnessed it, Indra took Lakshman, still in his earthly body, and entered heaven. Then all of the foremost among the gods, together with the seers, thrilled and delighted, worshiped him, who had
returned to his state as the fourth part of Bhagwaan Vishnu, Adishesh.

And this was the end of Lakshman ji, and some people deem Shri Ram acted cruelly here but they just haven't read Valmiki Ramayan.
The situation was a unavoidable.
And see Lakshman ji was himself telling Shri Ram to kill him, because he himself made this sacrifice for Kosal and their progeny....
Whatever happened was inevitable.
