CHAPTER 82

Hearing those words from the mouth of her husband, Devi Sita could no longer hold her tears. She looked at everyone, all stood silent and no one had courage to speak, not even Hanuman and Lakshman spoke up.

"Toh aap kehna chaahte hai ki- Aapka arth hai ki- Aapko mere charitra par sandeh-..." Devi Sita choked on her words.

She then took control of herself and then started speaking, slowly at first.

"Aap mujhe aise vachan kyu suna rahe hai jo mere kaano ko bhed rahe hai ? Aap mujhse aise kyu baat kar rahe hai jaise ek asabhya purush ek asabhya stree se baat karta hai ? Jo aap soch rahe hai mai waisi nahi hu. Mai apne charitra ki saugandh leke kehti hu, mera vishwas kare." Devi Sita said.

She continued, "Yadi kuch streeya charitraheen hoti hai toh iska yeh arth nahi ki sampoorn Nari-jaati ke charitra par aap prashn uthaye. Yadi aap mujhe jaante hai toh man se yeh shanka nikaal de. Ravan ne mera sparsh keval haran karte samaye kiya tha, jo meri iccha ke virudh tha, uss kshan mai asahaye thi. Mera man aur Hridaye sadev aapke prati samarpit raha hai. Itne varsh saath rehne ke paschat bhi yadi aapko mere baare mei itna bhi nahi pata toh mere liye mrityu ko praapt hona hi uchit hai."

She looked at Shri Ram, who dared not to look at her. He was hiding a thousand emotions in his eyes, and feared if he gazed at her, he couldn't control it.

"Jab Hanuman mujhe dhundhne aya tha, tab aapne kyu nahi kaha ki aap mera tyaag karna chahte hai ? Mai tab hi apne praan tyaag deti. Yaha tak aane ka kasht kyu kiya aapne ? Apne saathiyo ko kyu kasht diya yudh karne ka ? Kya aap nahi jaante ki mai koi sadharan stree nahi ? Mai bhumija hu. Aur fir bhi mujh par aap aise sandeh kar rahe hai ?" She asked.

Devi Sita couldn't take it anymore, Ram had questioned her. Her Ram had questioned her character as if he never knew her. But she was not going to take these allegations lying down.

"Lakshman ! Chitah jalao ! Keval yahi mere peeda ki upchaar hai. Mere pati ne mujhe tyaag diya hai. Unhe mere charitra par vishwas nahi. Iss liye mai Agni-pravesh karungi." She said.

By now Lakshman was red with fury, he was extremely angry at Shri Ram's uncharacteristic treatment of Devi Sita. He looked at his elder brother, whose expressions and body language suggested that he should do as she said.

With a heavy heart Lakshman compiled and lit a pyre. Devi Sita looked at Shri Ram, whose gaze her fixed on the ground. She joined her hands in front of him and then went towards the pyre.

"Yadi mere hridaye mei Ram ke sivaaye koi anya purush nahi toh Agni, chaaro dishao se meri Raksha kare ! Yadi mere charitra mei koi khot nahi, toh Agni chaaro dishao se meri Raksha kare ! Yadi mai man, karm aur vachan se keval Ram ke prati samarpit hu toh Agni chaaro dishao se mei Raksha kare ! Yadi surya, chandra, vayu, diwas, raatri, sabhi devta aur yeh sansaar mere pavitra ke sakshi hai toh Agni chaaro dishao se meri Raksha kare !" She said.

And with unwavering mind, she went inside the pyre. The women around screamed, seeing her engulfed in flames.

Just then the Devtas appeared along with Brahmadev to remind Shri Ram of his divinity.

"Aap koi sadharan purush nahi hai, Ram. Aap toh Vishnu ke avtaar hai jinhone Ravan ke vadh kar nirdosho ka uddhar karne hetu janm liya tha. Apne divyata ko smaran kare." Brahmadev said.

And just them Agnidev appeared and walked out of the pyre along with Devi Sita who looked just as resplendent as before. He had protected her, this was the testimony of her flawless character and immaculate conduct in Lanka.

"Sita ke charitra mei kan-maatra bhi khot nahi hai. Ravan ke anek prayaso ke baad bhi yeh dridh rahi." Agnidev said loud and clear.

The expressions of Shri Ram's face changed, the tears he was holding back finally fell down his eyes.

"Mujhe toh Sita ke charitra par kadapi sandeh nahi tha. Yeh toh apne prabha ki shakti se surakshit rahi. Sita toh swayam woh agni ki jyoti hai jisko Ravan kabhi praapt nahi kar sakta tha. Kintu yeh jaante huye bhi maine ise roka nahi, kyuki satya prakat karna awashyak tha. Sita ko uske iccha ke virudh Lanka mei rakha gaya kintu log yeh baat nahi samjhenge. Woh ise nahi jaante iss liye iske charitra par prashn uthayenge. Aisa na ho iss liye sabke samaksh Sita ki pavitra siddh karna anivarya tha." Shri Ram said.

He looked at Sita and smiled.

"Jaise prabha Surya se alag nahi ho sakti, Sita bhi mujhse alag nahi ho sakti. Mai iska tyaag kabhi nahi kar sakta." Shri Ram said.

And the very next moment he held her in his arms. Devi Sita also had no grudges, she probably knew that Shri Ram didn't doubt her character and just wanted to give this proof to general public, all along and hence cooperated.

"Tumhe pata hai ki tumhare virah mei mai abhi tak jeevit kaise raha ?" He asked, loud enough only for her to hear.

"Kaise ?" She asked.

"Kyuki tumhare bina mujhe swarg bhi nahi chahiye, praanpriye." He said embracing her again.

So now you know what happened as per Valmiki Ramayan. It's not something that should be seen as controversial.

And remember -

1) Shri Ram didn't ask her to enter the pyre, Mata Sita herself asked for it. He only provoked her to give a proof of her chastity.

2) He clearly said, in front of gods like Brahmdev and Agnidev, that he didn't had an ounce of doubt in her character and did all this to provoke her to prove her purity.

3) Both Shri Ram and Mata Sita cared very much about each other's reputation. This is the reason she didn't come with Hanuman ji and he provoked her, because they didn't care about what history will think about them, they were concerned about what history will think about their beloved.

Issliye bolo,

SIYAVAR RAM CHANDRA KI JAI !
