CHAPTER 72

With great efforts, the gigantic Kumbhkaran was woken up. One of Ravan's ministers named Virupaaksh told him everything that had occurred, from the abduction of Devi Sita to the war taking place.

He went straight to palace of Ravan and censured him for his deeds for his rash act.

"Kya Yash mila aapko ek sahaye Nari ka haran karke !? Aapne Vibhishan ya Mandodari se mantrana kyu nahi ki !?" Kumbhkaran asked.

"Maine humari behen ka pratishodh liya hai Kumbhkaran !" Ravan argued.

"Asatya ! Yadi aapko pratishodh lena hota toh Khar aur Dushan ke bhaati pratyaksh yudh karte ! Yeh kayaro ka karya nahi ! Satya toh yeh hai Shurpnakha ka pratishodh keval aapki Vaasna purti ka bahana hai ! Jiska fal sabhi Lanka vaasi ek baar punah bhog rahe hai !" Kumbhkaran said.

"Yadi keval updesh dena hai toh jaake punah so jao ! Buddhimaan bhootkaal par shok nahi karte, Karmyogi aane waale bhavishya ki chinta nahi karte, iss kshan kya karna hai woh batao ! Tumhare mere prati koi kartavya hai ya nahi !?" Ravan asked.

"Bhaiya, maine jo kaha, aapka hiteshi hone ke naate, woh kehna Mera kartavya bhi hai aur adhikhaar bhi. Kintu mujhe kya karna iske liye mere man mei koi sandeh nahi. Ya toh Vijayi hoke lautunga, ya mrityu ko praapt ho jaunga !" Kumbhkaran said.

And so the colossal cannibal Rakshas Kumbhkaran, entered the battlefield with his mudgar. His gigantic and fearsome size sent shudders in the Vanar army, several were trampled by him, several were mutilated and even more were eaten by him.

The earth was drenched in the blood of Vanars dues to the attack of Kumbhkaran. Many Vanars began to run away from the battlefield.

But Angad coaxed them by igniting their pride, reminding them of their family honour. He lured them with the dreams of victory if they lived and of heaven if they died fighting.

Angad's leadership and motivation brought them back, the Vanars were determinded to fight till their last breath.

But still it was impossible to match Kumbhkaran in physical strength. Lakshman suggested the Vanars to use their numerical strength against him. Thus many Vanars climbed on him, started biting himcwith their teeth and scratched him with their nails.

Meanwhile Angad and Sugreev lead the attack on ground. But Kumbhkaran although irritated by the Vanar assault still remained unfazed.

Suddenly Kumbhkaran hit Sugreev so hard that the king of Vanars fainted. The colossal Rakshas then lifted Sugreev om his head and was heading back to Lanka.

But luckily Sugreev regained his consciousness and using his nails and teeth he began biting Kumbhkaran's ears and ripped his chest apart, causing the Rakshas's grip to loosen. Sugreev then leaped out and escaped to his camp.

Shri Ram became angry seeing the devastation being caused by Kumbhkaran. He struck the string of his bow producing a lour twang, announcing his intention of taking the giant head on.

But Kumbhkaran was so strong that the powerful arrow Shri Ram used to kill Vali was ineffective on him. His body seemed to just suck in the arrows.

Shri Ram then summoned a more potent weapon, called Vyaavya-astra and shot it at Kumbhkaran, which severed his arm that was holding the mudgar.

Yet the colossal giant didn't give up, he uprooted a tree with his other hand and continued his attack on the Vanars. But Shri Ram used another powerful arrow and chopped off his other arm too.

Then with back to back arrows Shri Ram chopped off the lower limbs of Kumbhkaran and his next arrow severed the Rakshas's head. The force of the arrow shot was such that Kumbhkaran's head fell all the way inside the ocean.

The news of Kumbhkaran's death shook Ravan. His sorrowful mind reminded him of Vibhishan's wise words of caution. But there was no stopping of the war now. The sons and brother of the Rakshasas that were killed wanted revenge.
