It has been 3 days and 3 nights since Shri Ram had been meditating on Varun dev to give them a way to cross the ocean. With great humility, sitting on the mat made of kush grass, Shri Ram invoked Varundev, but the god of oceans showed no signs of being appeased.

This obstinacy angered Shri Ram who has lost all his patience now. He shot opened his eyes, that were red like blood due to anger.

"Iss samudra ka ahankar toh dekho ! Itne vinamrata poorn mai iska avahan kar raha hu kintu yeh darshan hi nahi de raha. Satya hai ki Sat-guno se gun-heen vyakti ko samjhaya nahi jaa sakta ! Aise vyaktiyo ke liye shabd nahi keval dand upyukt hai !" Shri Ram said.

He grabbed his bow and stood up. Putting an arrow on it, he took the aim at the ocean.

"Tumne mera aagrah nahi suna Varun ! Ab mera aadesh suno ! Yadi mujhe darshan nahi diya toh mai samudra ko sukha kar, apni sena leke Lanka jayunga !" Shri Ram said.

And then he shot deadly astras at the ocean, which caused great chaos. The impact of his arrows sent the fishes and other creatures of the ocean to come up. Huge waves arose touching the sky the way they do in state of a tsunami.

Seeing the atmosphere of pralay, Lakshman rushed towards Shri Ram to hold him back.

"Bhaiya ! Ruk jayiye ! Anyatha iss prithvi ka naash ho jayega !" Lakshman said.

Luckily Varun dev finally emerged out of the waters, with joined hands.

"Shaant ho jaye prabhu. Mai maarg dikhata hu." He said.

Shri Ram lowered his bow and calmed down finally seeing the god of oceans in front of him.

"Mere upar ek setu baandhe. Aapki vanar sena mei Nal namak jo vanar hai, woh swayam Vishwakarma ka putra hai. Aap isko yeh karya saup de, Nal apne samarthya se aisa setu banayega jisse aap sampurn sena sahit Lanka pahuch jayenge." Varundev said.

All eyes turned to Nal, who stood up agreeing to what Varundev said.

"Varundev satya keh rahe hai, mera janm Vishkarma ke madhyam se huya hai. Devshilpi ne meri Mata ko vachan diya tha ki unke sahyog se jo santaan janm legi woh unke bhaati hi vaastukaar hogi. Mujhse yeh baat puchi nahi gayi toh bina kisi karan apna bakhan karna uchit nahi samjha. Kintu mujhe vishwas hai ki mai samudra par setu bana sakta hu." Nal said.

Saying this, the son of Devshilpi Vishkarma got to work right away. He gave instructions for the material he wanted and how to procure it. The Vanar sena enthusiastically started to bring the materials from the forest.

They brought boulders, rocks and trunks of all types of trees including Saal, Arjun, Ashok, Mango and bamboo. They also uprooted trees of coconut, neem and Bakul. The vanars also brought various shrubs and reeds.

Boulders that were as big as mountains were thrown into the sea. From the shrubs and the barks of trees, strong ropes were made to keep the rocks in alignment.

The material collected from the forest was used to bind the stones and tree trunks together. To fasten the parts of the bridge together long reeds were used.

Thus on the first day 14 Yojanas of the bridge was constructed, followed by 20 yojanas, 21 yojanas, 22 yojanas and 23 yojanas on consecutive days. And so in 5 days a 100 Yojan long and 10 yojan wide bridge was built by Vanars.

The impossible had been made possible by Nal. The setu was incomparable in style and strength, it seemed as though Vishwakarma himself had made it. The huge, well constructed Setu which was held tightly together, looked like a long beautiful line cutting through the ocean.

And hence using the bridge Shri Ram, Lakshman and Sugreev along with the thousands and thousands of Vanar sena crossed the ocean and set foot on the glorious city of Lanka.

The self assumed notion that Ravan was invincible had already been shaken after the feat of Hanuman in Lanka, and now this false notion of of his invincibility had been shattered.

Never in his wildest dreams, Ravan could've thought a bridge could be made over the ocean allowing the enemy soldiers to descend on Lanka.

So this is how the Ram Setu was actually built. And it is still just as miraculous because it is a civil engineering project par excellence that has still survived even after thousands of years.
