Chapter 45
"Bye mom I'll see you later!" I yelled into the doorway, then dashing off towards the bus stop. "Have a nice day sweety!" Even though the raven haired boy disappeared into thin air, I still carried a smile. I couldn't exactly explain it, but something just gave me this energy that was making it impossible to bring me down. Every single fiber contained in my body was on the brink of exploding because of all this sudden energy. I've never had experienced this type of feeling before, I was filled with happiness from top to bottom.
The sun was rising in the clear distant sky, the sheen of lustrous gold filling the berry trees to my side, hindering shadows that my feet swept across on the asphalt side walk. The gleaming heat stopped head on, yet seeping in through small cracks found in the blockage. My hair blew in random direction each time from the wind created by the vehicles passing by in incredible speeds. I skipped passed the solid terrain without a care in the world, both hands behind my back, embraced in one and other.
Near, in the distance, I saw the road expand inward and the plastic box supported by metal polls located next to it. The place wasn't empty. I could see countless people standing on the side of the box, chatting each other up or others sitting in their own world. I made my way towards my own group, who unsurprisingly were in another heated discussion. It seemed like some sort of argument, but it wasn't the entire group. Paul stood to the side merely listening to the two idiots conflicting each other once more.
Dawn, Shauna and May were all giggling at the sidelines. I could see Dawn pull her hand up to May's ear and whisper something into it, causing her to turn a dark red and bring her hands up to chest level, only to begin bumping her index fingers into each other from the side. Typical Dawn to either tease or embarrass someone, May attempted to retort something judging by the fact that her lips had move, but I believe she was too shy to say it out loud for them to hear.
Shauna was the first to notice me, her lips curved from ear to ear while her arm was raised and waved in the air like crazy towards me. "Serena! Over here!" She shouted out, I sweat dropped at her since she could clearly see that I was making my way towards the group. The two boys quarreling in the middle seemed to have stopped, once facing away from the other, a childish way to respond to an argument while the other starred directly at me, eyes full of lust and mouth agape.
I saw him try and muster up some kind of wave by his hand, but it only caused me to cringe at the attempt, but still got a chuckle out of me. His lips were apart and something wanted to be released from them, but nothing was coming out. As if something was chocking him, or rather he was chocking on his own words. It was funny to say the least, funny and cute at the same time.
Due to my focus and attention being else where, I didn't notice the pair of feet lying beneath me on the floor from someone who was simply sitting and waiting for the bus. Not very observant of me I must say, I am often aware of my surroundings though. I stumbled forward, and was certain that my face would soon connect with the solid ground beneath, leaving scratches and bruises that would stay there forever. Those thoughts were soon put a side when I felt a pair of arms grab me and save me from the fall. I was relieved that someone had saved me from inevitable pain.
I looked up to see my hero, and my eyes connected with the color of gray. "Watch where you're going Serena, you don't want to hurt that pretty face of your do you?" He let out, my cheeks flashed the color pink and couldn't maintain the eye contact. I gulped and regained my posture, getting my footing again. I dusted myself off, even though I didn't actually make contact with the surface below and gave some form of a smile to the person carrying a dark toned pack and a red hat accompanied by dark shades.
"T-thanks Calem." I made out staring at him, he nodded and motioned his hand towards the group, letting me pass by. I took his offer and walked over the the lake of familiar faces. "What happened there?" Dawn slowly leaned in closer towards me, causing me to jump "N-nothing! I only tripped and Calem was kind enough to help me out." I burst out quickly, causing chuckles to escape the blue haired girl's mouth. "I'm sure that's all it was..." She said grabbing me by the shoulder, and leaned closer, right next to my ear "I saw those cheeks." My jaw dropped, and caused me to look at her "Body language never lies." She said pointing with her finger
"Can we move on!" I shouted, causing all heads to turn my direction. I panicked and hid behind Dawn, hiding from all countless pairs of eyes set on me. My actions earned me laughter from the rest of our group. I didn't think I would be able to handle Dawn any longer, fortunately for me. I didn't. The bus was making it's way towards us, stopped and began filling with students. I went all the way to the back and set my backpack beside to not allow any unwanted visitors. I brought out a pair of earphones, plugging in one into my right ear and another into the left, blocking out all the annoying sounds.
My eyes stared out into the wilderness, countless buildings passing by. The different people and pokemon filling the streets. Business men in suits, oblivious to their surroundings through the important phone calls, street vendors taking their place across various places, multiple faces sitting at the outskirts of restaurants enjoying the weather while chatting to their companions. Kids dashing towards their future, hoping to reach it just in time. My head turned to the other side, the adjacent window, opposite to the one I had analyzed.
Ground filled with dirt, sand and two people on opposite sides. On each side two pokemon located, eyeing the other down. A clash between the two began, the dance of power. Thinking about it, a pokemon battle is merely a performance with pokemon against each other. However, the challenge of a battle is improvisation. In the performance world, I can spend countless hours, days, perhaps even months practicing a single performance and execute it perfectly. In a stand off, you can come prepared with strategies, type advantages and many other things that I am probably unaware of. Even with everything planned, nothing can prepare you for the final performance. Not always will things go according to plan, and that is what I had found to admire trainers for.
The raven haired boy had flashed into my mind. He, Ash, had showed me these aspects at which brought me to a better understanding of battling. When a battle commences, it isn't about win or lose for him. That boy battles, because he enjoys it and so do his pokemon. The bond that Pikachu and Ash share is one that is unbreakable, not even by the strongest force. The matches I had witnessed him in, all included thinking on his feet. Something I doubt I will ever be able to accomplish on my own. When he battled Cynthia, and Flint I was on the edge of my seat. I didn't know I had enjoyed battles this much.
I stopped my thinking process for a moment. I widened my eyes at the realization. 'It wasn't just any battles I had been interested in' My mind recalled back to the time Calem had went to challenge Grant for his second gym battle. 'I never really cared for the battle, but I went along for no other reason than that my other friends would also be joining.' A grinned at myself, looking out towards the sky 'You always somehow manage to seep into my mind, and only cause me to admire you more.'
'But I am getting slightly annoyed that you keep disappearing this often.' A single sigh escaped my mouth, thinking about the empty room I had entered earlier today 'Where on Earth do you keep disappearing, and why so early in the morning?'
'Training I guess, but how much can a person train?'
I now sat in my assigned seat in the classroom that was filled with noise, erupting from familiar faces, some more than others. My eyes kept on glancing towards the time, the hands moving ever so slowly, yet so quickly. From the clock to the door, the clock to the door constantly. Repeat. Worry was solely on my mind, and for some reason it didn't go away. My eyes wanted to see that color of raven to enter through the piece of timber.
Someone had entered, but alas it was not the boy that often had the yellow mouse placed on his shoulder. To my disappointment, the professor had been the one to make his way to the front desk of the room and place all of his things before asking everyone to quiet down. Soon all the chatter had died down, and everyone returned to their respective seats, sending their attention the professors way.
The whole way here I had been covered in anxiety and it only worsened when I rushed to the room, ignoring the rest of my friends to try and see if the trainer had already come to school. The theory I had gone along was the fact that he had woken up extra early to walk to school with Pikachu, since he did say that it was more appealing than travelling by vehicle. My theory was disproved the moment I burst into the room, panting heavily and my eyes analyzing every bit of the room, but were depressed to find nothing.
Now I'm slouching in my chair, paying attention to the boring lesson. I already knew most of these things from the topic we were currently covering, however I didn't want to get sent to the office again. It was far too many times in the last few weeks and I didn't want to upset professor Sycamore any further, and also worsen my reputation. Time had gone by slowly, very slowly. Seconds felt like minutes, minutes felt like hours, and hours felt like an eternity. Each time I peeked at the clock, the hands barely moved. I sighed and slammed my head on the desk. Writing down pointless notes was the least of my concern.
The dreadful lesson had finally ended, and I was on my way to the next. General pokemon studies. This one would go by quickly, I enjoyed this class. Mostly because this was the one I had spend my time working on a project with the person I had grown to admire. Once again, because of my mind being lost in deep thought, I managed to bump into someone random causing me to drop all of my materials and resources. I apologized to the person and they helped me gather my things before heading off. A breath let itself out my mouth "Serena, get it together. Geez." I said out loud to myself.
Again, I had been the first person to enter the classroom. Nobody else was there. I took my seat, and waited. For some reason, I decided to get up from the spot I usually sit in and walked to the back of the room and situated myself at the back row, one seat available next to me on my left, right next to the corner. I didn't know why I did it, I just wanted to sit at the back. A while later, it was rinse and repeat. Students began flooding the room, breaking up into groups to socialize. Meanwhile I waited patiently in my seat in silence.
The professor for this class had made his presence clear through out the room, and yet again. No raven haired boy in sight. "Alright everyone, listen up this is important." The room had died down, no word being spoken. Dead silence. "Today we will be having a pop quiz." The voice rang out and bounced off of the walls. A bunch of complaints could be heard, and the sound of grunts. "Enough, this class isn't hard. If you pay attention this should be a breeze." He said, and went to his desk, placing his folder onto it.
The folder revealed to contain numerous papers, identical to each other. The professor had grabbed the entire stack and began passing them around. "Do not turn them around until I say so." He eventually reached me, and sent one over to me, but also gave me confused look "Sitting at the back today area we Miss Yvonne?" He asked, and I nodded with a smile "Just felt like switching it up today, if that's fine by you?" He returned the smile and waved me off "Of course, no problem."
The door had been opened, and my eyes shot to it immediately. The moment my mind had been waiting for, and can now be at peace. The raven haired boy carrying the electric type slammed the piece of wood shut behind him, and made his way to the back, where he usually sits. I checked with the professor, and he was busy still giving out tests, not even noticing Ash. He perched his head up and saw him, but didn't do anything about it. No warning about being late, no detention, not even a word. I wasn't the only one to notice this. On the other side of the room, I could see Calem make a face of annoyance.
I watched as Calem's eyes followed Ash through out the room, giving him a glare, but Ash being Ash ignored him and continued his journey. Eventually he reached the last row, and gained a surprised expression when he saw me sitting there. I slightly blushed at his reaction "I-I hope it's alright with you if I sit here." I said, my face heating up with each passing moment. He shrugged his shoulders, making me feel as though a massive weight had been taken off of my back. Ash grabbed the chair next to me, pushed it out and took his seat. The professor came and handed him a paper. "Good luck." was the only thing he said.
I studied Ash as he took the paper in his hand, flipping it over. My mouth went agape at this, although then again. He wasn't here to hear the instructions. "Ash, you aren't allowed to flip it over yet." I warned him, in a soft tone. He grinned, but I didn't know at what, whether it was my response or the paper. "It doesn't matter if you give me the extra time or not, I'll finish this in no time." He boasted, and grabbed a pen from his backpack. I shook my head "Of course you will..." I said underneath my breath, making sure he won't hear it. From the corner of my eye, I could see Calem looking towards me and Ash with an annoyed expression. I didn't understand, and honestly didn't want to try to understand, I just decided to ignore it instead.
"Alright class, you can now turn over your papers. You have exactly an hour to finish, no more. Once your time is up, drop your pens on the table and go hand in your tests." The professor explained, I payed attention to the important information meanwhile the person beside me was already zooming past the test and writing like there was no tomorrow. I sweat dropped at his speed and then focused on my own. Fortunately this is one of the few subjects I put my full attention into and will manage to pull this off.
About twenty minutes, give or take, into the test there was a noise that went off beside me. I raised my head from the piece of paper and shifted it to the figure beside me. I glanced down at Ash's wrist and the device that was going off. I didn't know what that meant, but for some reason Ash stopped everything that he was doing and turned it off. He put the pen back in his bag and stood up "Where are you going?" I asked in a whisper towards the boy "Somewhere to do something that doesn't concern you." He put in a cold tone, yet still smiled my way, which caused blood to flow to my cheeks.
Ash took his piece of paper and walked down the steps to the table where the teacher was situated. He handed over the test and I could hear the professors words "It's fine if you didn't finish, you can retake it ne-..." The professor voice trailed off while he went over the paper, and the answers. I don't know what Ash had done, but the professor was left completely flabbergasted. My mind had come to the conclusion that he had filled in every answer already. I guess it should be expected of him. The knowledge he contains is both terrifying and amazing at the same time.
My eyes went from Ash to a boy staring right at him, pure hatred in his eyes. It was Calem. Ash walked away from the professor and towards the exit. I heard a chair being thrown back aggressively and the sound of multiple footsteps running towards the raven haired boy. Calem had sprinted towards Ash and grabbed him, stopping him from leaving. "You haven't been here for weeks, and all of the sudden you show up. You leave this place as if you own it and do anything you like without any consequences and it's bullshit!" The voice of the black haired complaints rang through the room.
"Calem, that's enough. Return to your seat." I stood up when Calem didn't move a bulge from the command of the professor. "Hell no! He can't just get away with this. There has to be some sort of punishment for this." He complained, my eyes went to the raven haired. I could see one of his hands in a fist, his hat covering his face. It was clear that he was slightly annoyed. "Perhaps you can't recall what happened last time you tried something like this?" The words stung like poison when they made their way to my ears.
My mind went back to the first time Calem had annoyed Ash and ended up on the floor, later in the infirmary. Ash removed the hand off of him "I don't have time for this." He then shoved Calem away and into the table. I gasped at the sight and ran to the boy, bending down to see if he was alright. "Calem are you alright?" I asked, to which he ignored me and only rubbed the back of his head. Ash noticed me, the shake of his head and a grin was the only thing he let out before he continued to leave the room.
