Chapter 44

I stood there on my end of the field, panting heavily. My heart was racing, beating like there was no tomorrow. This feeling, I couldn't understand it. It was as though everything depended on the outcome of this match. I was down to the last, same as the other. My long time partner is resting next to me, knocked out from the previous match up. I stared down my opponent, even with a covered intention, I could still see that grin.

My eyes slid to the sides, countless blurred images in the distance, some clearer than others. A color of blue standing by the side of pink. Wrapped in each other, I shook my head and stared off back at my opponent. That masked figure was back once more. Once more to haunt me in my nocturnal rest. Every time that dark shadow appeared, a restless feeling filled me from top to bottom. This thing keeps appearing in my mind, yet I've never been associated with it.

"Greninja, Water Shuriken!" I shouted out towards my companion. Full of energy, unable to contain it, I mimicked the movements of Greninja grabbing the object that I could feel with ease, but was never located on my back. My vision had also been shifting forward and backward. With a single motion, the massive weapon made of water was launched at the four legged creature beyond. The move connected, but not with the intended target. In the distance, an ear piercing demonic scream was let out by the figure built of shadows.

I trembled at the sudden outburst, every fiber in my body stiffened while I watched the figure. It was bent down, hands covering the mask. The mysterious creature of the shadow turned it's attention back to it's master. "Raaaawr!" It let out before shooting out towards Greninja. Electricity dashed through my body as I stared at the shadow rushing towards us. "Greninja, Double Team!" The frog like pokemon began multiplying by the tens and soon the area was filled with them. With every moment, clawing was arriving from every direction.

Soon the predator founds its pray and sent Greninja stumbling back towards me, my left arm dropped and pain soon filled my shoulder. I recoiled by taking hold of it. I let out a grunt and sent my eyes back at the opposing figure. It stood up slowly, its see through hands hiding what was behind, yet still the smoke could not be seen clear through. Everything was at a stand still, silence filled the area, not even wind was blowing anymore. Everything had died down, an uneasy feeling entered me while staring at the figure nervously. The figure dropped it's arms, letting them lose to the ground. The body completely lifeless, not a single movement.

It shot up towards the sky, I was still unable to see it. The shadow sent out a loud maniacal laugh that could cause shivers to be sent down to every person present, every nerve in the body stiffening from the tone and the eyes trembling from the sight. Finally the shadow lowered it's face down to me, giving me that same old hidden expression. This time was different, the mask it was damaged. There was a crack located going down from it's top right to the end of the left bottom, crossing over the pitch black eye hole.

My jaw dropped, eyes widened as I realized what had happened. This only left me further confused when I saw the outcome. It still made no sense "Who are you and what is that!" I shout out towards the victim of the Water Shuriken. The sound of distant chuckles was picked up by my ears, I gritted my teeth at the response. "Greninja, Cut let's go!" I called out resuming the battle once more. The two met at the middle, crashing into one and other sending out blasts of air into each and every direction. The power sent out was incredible, the hat situated atop my head had blown off into the darkness behind.

A dance was taking place in the middle, a dance of power. The two kept swinging and connecting, blocking each other, pivoting in directions to dodge and taking into offence when seeing an opening. I could feel myself begin to feel exhausted with each passing movement, the dance taking a toll on my body. Our foot soon slipped and my companion was sent flying back, tumbling on the ground to me. I dropped to my knee in pain, absorbing a powerful hit from the user.

I squinted my eyes, then saw in shock as the creature built of shadows shot out a beam towards the water type attempting to recover in front of my eyes. I could see it beginning to enlarge through the secondary vision, before it engulfed me completely. The smoke had risen from nowhere, a gas spreading into each and every part of the container. I coughed, covering my mouth to avoid inhaling the toxins. When the visions was finally clear, I saw Greninja lying on the floor not moving a single muscle. Bruises and scratches covered it's body from head to toe. I reached a hand out towards it but was stopped.

I couldn't explain the force that was taking it's course through my veins, but for some reason I was frozen, unable to move. From the corner of my eye, I spotted my hand shaking crazy, trembling. A tightened feeling was located around my chest, each breath becoming unstable, destroying the rhythm. A piece of liquid was building upon itself in my ovals and escaped, sliding down the rough terrain of my face, a sleigh speeding down through a rock filled path.

Being too distracted, and unaware of my surroundings, an impression of disturbance was set around. I gazed to the side, and stumbled backwards. The shadow figure with the cracked mask was now standing beside me "Get away from me!" I cried out, pushing myself backward with my hands, staring at the figure. Unfortunately for me, my trip was cut short by an object connecting with my back. The figure watched me in silence, it's presence giving out a sense of insecurity. Not even a moment to spare, it began... floating towards me. No sound was being executed from the action.

I watched in distress as the figure edged closer, gulping. It stopped right before me, lowering it's self to my level, the mask right staring directly into my eyes. There was nothing inside to be seen. I attempted to look through the eye holes, nothing. Pitch black color inside. The silence was soon interrupted by the sound of a quiet whisper.

"You... already know... who... I am..."

I was sent out into the darkness upon the single touch of the shadow. I was sent out flying into the darkness. I had abruptly stopped, lying down on some kind of soft surface. I sat up from said surface to feel around me, a sheet covering my body and a small cushioned object by my right hand. In my lap another curled up piece of the puzzle. I looked around in distress, unaware of my surroundings, the heavy panting continued, sweat formed all across my face. I winced my eyes, before rubbing them. They had adjusted to the darkness, and I was now able to see where I was.

I stood up, picking up the fur ball in my lap and placing him on the bed to let him continue rest in his curled up state. What brought a smile to my face was the slight, and quiet sounds escaping him. My mind was lost for the moment, forgotten where it had been shut down previously. I opened the blinds to the room and let the poor light fade in. It flooded the room, igniting all objects inside. The corner of my eye picked up the slight movement of the yellow mouse pokemon. It twitched it's ears before raising it's head at my direction "Pika?"

"Morning buddy." I said while gazing outside. Stepping back from the window, I checked the time quick. Early. Extremely early in the morning. A grumble was let out from the stomach of the electric type. Pikachu was scratching the back of his head "Pika..." I chuckled at his thirst for food "Guess you're hungry huh." The yellow mouse pokemon nodded "Alright then. I guess there's no real point of falling back asleep. Let's go and find a training spot after you've eaten." I suggested to my buddy, who lit up from the suggestion. Either that or because of the food.

I pulled down on the handle of the door to our room, leading into a hallway that runs all the way up until a set of stairs. The pokemon dashed past me and down the hall towards the stairway. I grinned "You aren't beating me to it!" I shouted in a whisper, to prevent others from waking up and began the race to the kitchen.

Meanwhile in a room nearby...

We were situated outside. Under the cherry blossom piece of beauty planted at the center of the campus. The source of pink spreading all across the ground, the wind blowing my hair with no hesitation or mercy. I wanted to tug it behind my ear, but I melted when he reached with haste feeling the silky texture before putting it at it's rightful place. "No beauty should be hidden, not even by the madness of your honey blonde colors." A flush of red aligning under my eyes. He chuckled at my reaction.

We sat there in complete peace, no one else in sight. The falling innocence was bestowed upon by the burning light coming in contact. I focused on a single pieces, following it's journey until it reached the bottom, staying still for what seemed an eternity before once again moving around and picking itself back up with the assistance of the breeze. Perching up the back of the tree, I couldn't help but admire the impact of a single piece. Stretching into all directions, claiming all land underground, and expanding into space above.

I glanced to the side, the person next to me which I admire to the fullest. There was nobody else with us. Not a single person nor pokemon in sight. I had purposefully left my pokemon's pokeballs at my home, while the trainer beside still seem to carry however a certain signature one was missing from the image. Merely thinking about the fact that we were alone sent a wave of emotions flowing in my body. A feeling of nervousness above all, worry a close first. Worry of what I often ask myself. Worry of rejection? Worry of dejection? Worry of the future to come...

My mind was running millions, upon millions of miles per hour. I couldn't think straight at all whenever I was close to this boy. Never would I get these types of weird feelings coming from my direction from any one else. This boy was different in every other way compared to the others. This lifeless shell protecting the inside must and will be broken. Although knowing ones true colors is one thing, knowing their intention is still a complete mystery. I had often found myself in deep thought regarding this boy. Where he had come from, what was his intentions, or purpose in Kalos. I had received a single response, but not one to solve the entire case.

The boy was some sort of puzzle with plenty of pieces missing in the package. Slowly had I begun gathering these pieces one by one, filling in the challenging test of ingenuity. Once I do complete it, the satisfaction will be enough. For now, I am contempt with what I have been given. I may not know much about him, but I know more about him than anyone else at this school. I looked at the clear sky with an expression of deep thinking. Am I the person who knows the most? Professor Sycamore says he doesn't know much about him, yet still somehow I feel that is suspicious, and Ash does seem to spend lots of time in his office often...

"Serena, what'cha thinking about?" I turned my head to the raven haired boy, staring at me with those perfect bronze ovals and the sheepish grin plastered across his face to put the cherry on top. No matter when or where, he always seemed to be able to relax. Another key aspect I admired about him. I had over a long period found out that he is quite the laid back person once you get to know him. His cold self is barely ever present, only a soothing aura radiating from him, sending out a feeling of warmth and safety. It would be impossible to deny the admiration I hold for this person.

The more I get to know him the more he inspires me to succeed, I don't understand it myself. Most people ignore him and leave him be, but somehow I managed to slide under his grid and managed to befriend the boy out of curiosity. Curiosity, something that had evolved into beyond my own intentions... and I regret nothing of it. The raven haired boy was a pleasure to be around, it wasn't the typical day when I spend my time with him. Always off schedule, random and yet welcoming at the same time. A small smile stole the place as my expression, meanwhile my eyes stared at the ground covered in little bits of pink, as though someone had dropped a thousand petals on the ground.

"Serena" A hand came in contact with my shoulder, slightly shaking me awake. I opened my mouth in awe as I looked to the side at the figure beside me, chuckling at my reaction "You going to sleep?" He asked in a mocking way, yet one that not even I could get mad at. I simply laughed along with him, no second thoughts. Because of our distractions with the laughter, I hadn't even noticed the distance between him and me. I could see his breath connecting and mixing with mine. We were lost in each other, admiring the and other. My reflection was visible in his.

"Ash..." I finally let out, continuing to stare at him. I closed my eyes, and took in a deep breath. 'Come on Serena, you can do this. This is it, this is the time and the place.' I said in my consciousness, confronting my worries and confirming my actions. Bringing my curled hand up to the center of my chest, I wanted to let him know where this was coming from. I shot open my eyes.

"When I'm around you, I begin feeling nervous. My heart beat fastens, my mind relaxes and I know that these things, you cause these things. The person who enjoys spending time with pokemon, I want to be with that person. Not the cold one, the real Ash. I don't know about your past, and I don't care. I have these feelings for the one who I know is still in there. Ash, I may have only known you for a short while now, but... I like knowing you, and being with you. I want to be together... with you."

I inhaled in a shaky manor, nervous of the response of the raven haired trainer. It was further solidified when he didn't respond, only silence. His eyes showed nothing, his face showed no emotion, his body posture as cold as ever. I couldn't handle it anymore, I felt the tears build in my eyes. I looked away to the side, letting them flow down to the ground. My head was brought back right away, a soft hand underneath my chin. I stared into him in disbelief, shocked by his action. A slight smile performed on his face, while fireworks blew off in my mind.

The gap between us began closing. I could feel his breath on my skin, his smooth hand failing to leave, only pulling me in further. I watched on frozen, but still able to move at will. Ash tilted his head sideways, closing his eyes. I followed him, and my vision turned dark. Each breath closer and hitting a spot with accuracy and precision each time. The breath becoming narrower and narrower, I spread my lips apart waiting for the contact. I felt the air sip inside me without the help of my lungs.

Out of nowhere an object was sent into my face. Stinging feeling was felt all across. I shot up from my sitting position, looking around only to be left disappointed. Everything had disappeared, all the beauty and the bliss gone before my very eyes. My head moved from window to desk, to shelf, to wardrobe. 'My room...' I thought to myself, turning down due to an unexpected pressure point on my bed sheets. "Fletch?" The robin look alike said tilting it's head. My eyes widened, jaw dropped beyond belief as I stared at the pokemon.

"FLEEEEEEEEEEEEEETCHLIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING!"

I let out an antagonizing scream towards the pokemon, and smashed the location of the pokemon, only for it to dodge immediately. I darted out of the bed and after the flying type into the hallway. I chased after it, and I knew it was going downstairs back to my mother, who most likely ordered the attack. While my taste for vengeance was not yet satisfied, I stopped at a particular room. The door was open, and light was barely escaping. I opened the door widely, closing my eyes in order not to see something I'm not supposed to. "Ash?" I called out. No response.

I peeked with one eye open into the room, it was empty. Nobody was inside. 'Guess he woke up before me, makes sense I guess. I bet he's eating breakfast!' I said in a hope filled tone. I made my way downstairs and into the dining room. Still empty 'He may be helping with breakfast?' Walking towards the kitchen, my eyes looked for any sign of the boy. I was further left disappointed when he wasn't there either.

"Where's Ash mom?" I asked my mother in a worrisome voice. She chuckled at this. "What's so funny?" I asked in a curious tone. The slight laughter eventually died down "This has to be the first time Fletchling woke you up and you didn't complain about. I guess someone is very important to you." My mom teased straight of the bat, not even five minutes awake. Blood flowed to my cheeks, and I could feel them heat up with no sign of stopping.

"I-I w-was just wonder-ing wh-where he was." I tried to sound as though I didn't really care, but was failing miserably at it. "I'm sure that's all you meant by it."

"Shut up mom!" I shouted out towards her, completely embarrassed. She is really getting a kick out of this, and it's annoying the hell out of me. I let out a sigh 'Back to this routine again...'

My head shot back up at her and Fletchling "What was the big deal with waking me up by the way, you didn't even call me down or anything. Not even a warning, you just sent your little worker there to wake me up for your own amusement." I said in an annoyed tone.

"Not a single warning? I can recall saying your name countless times, I even went up to your room to try and wake you up myself, a nice way this time. You didn't budge a bit, so I took the proper precautions to waking you up." She explained, focusing on the food in the pan. I stayed quite not knowing what to say.

"Well, it was because I had a dream that I really wanted to finish..." I murmured low, but somehow my mom still picked it up. Noibat ears. It must be. I bet she's hiding them beneath that brown hair of hers "Was this dream regarding a certain somebody?" She pushed in, snicker escaping her mouth while she was at it.

"Mom!" I cried out once more, I was beyond flustered and embarrassed by her comments "Could you please just answer my question, where is he. And don't you dare giving me another one of your teasing answers, I swear I am not afraid of using that pan mom." She didn't face my direction, only focused on the food.

"I don't know Serena." My mom finally answered my question, yet I was left confused "What do you mean you don't know, didn't you see him?" I questioned, yet she simply shrugged her shoulders. "When I woke up, he was already gone. I don't know when or where he went but what was left was a dent in the floor at the bottom of the stairway." I narrowed my eyes in confusion

"You have quite the taste in boys Serena." That's it I'm going in for the pan. I had high hopes for succession, but needless to say my hand was left red at the end. The smack of a spatula really does wonders to the mind, yet causes such pain to the body. "MOM! Didn't I just tell you to stop!" I cried out, both because of her teasing and the pain in my hand.

"Alright young lady, go get dressed. You'll need to eat your breakfast before you leave for school." I exited the kitchen "I'll show you what you need to eat..." I said under my breath, making my way towards the stairway "What was that?" I heard from behind me. How. "Nothing!" I yelled and then dashed up the stairs.

'Why do you always seem to disappear into thin air...'
