Chapter 16

A moment or so ago, I arrived at school. I was sleepy and tired, my eyes were struggling to stay open, while I was struggling to stay up and kept walking towards our group's usual meet up spot. On my way there, I ran into Dawn who then notified me of what will happen today. "Did you hear? Calem is going to challenge Ash to a battle!" She told, her voice filled with excitement while also jumping up and down. "Dawn, that's great and all but I don't really like battles and you know this..." I replied not finding the news very interesting.

What surprised me however was the fact that Calem, the trainer who has yet to catch another pokemon, is challenging Ash, the person who demolished the Santalune gym leader and got his second badge in the same day. 'I wonder how that battle went, I would of loved to see it' I thought inside my mind lost in deep thought.

"Serena?" Dawn waved her hand in front of my face

She continued and then looked at where I was looking, it was towards Ash's general direction. He could be seen making his way into the school building "Oh, I see how it is" Dawn teased while also chuckling. "W-What do you see? I w-was... thinking about the battle" I quickly tried to reply waving my hands before me

"Didn't you just state a second ago that you weren't interested in the battle?" Crap, she got me there. Great now she is going to start getting suspicious about me looking at Ash. "We both know what you were looking at, or should I say who you were looking at" Dawn kept on teasing trying to get the information out of me. I was getting really nervous and my brain was constantly trying to think of something to get me out of this mess.

"I was looking at Ash!" I yelled at Dawns face, who raised her hands up in defense "Alright, I'll drop it, let's get to our group before you become even more embarrassed" Great suggestion, I'd love to drop this. Things were quiet for a bit until Dawn started up again "You know... I never mentioned anything about Ash" She proceeded to turn around while sticking out her tongue and pulling her lower eyelid down with her finger "DAWN!" I screamed running after her

The two of us eventually reached our destination and joined the group, which currently looked to be in a heated discussion.

"I'm telling you guys, the person who saved that Garchomp was me, who else do you think could pull of such an act, haven't you heard my cheerleaders?" Gary was attempting to convince the others that he was the hero of the day at Prism Tower. "Gary, we all know you have a massive problem with your ego, a) You don't have a Greninja, all you have is that Eevee which has yet to evolve, b) If you were the one to do it, then right after you would be completely full of yourself, and be thanking the people for their appreciation of your so called 'saving', because your ego filled head wouldn't avoid it at all and finally c) I REMEMBER THAT WE WERE HANGING OUT ON THAT DAY!" Paul tried explaining to Gary

"But how do you know it was me Paul? It could have been my twin, or a Gary from another universe" We all sweat dropped at his crazy imagination. The silly conversation eventually died down and went silent, that is until Dawn brought something up that I did not want to be shared with the rest of the gang "Oh, by the way guys, Serena was ch-" I practically jumped onto Dawn holding her mouth with my arm this time, not repeating the mistake I did a while back.

All of them looked at us with confusion as I was shutting Dawn up. "Serena was doing what?" The attention of the group shifted to Calem who was walking up to us confused like the others about my action. I went off of Dawn, and although I will regret this, letting her finish her sentence. "As I was saying before someone rudely interrupted me" She cleared her throat, signifying that it was important "Serena was checking for Ash, so that you could have a battle with him" Wait what. Thank Archeus that Dawn has no idea.

"Eh, is this really true Serena?" Calem asked me "I-ehm, yes?"

"Wow thanks Serena your the best! Oh I want to make another proposal." Calem started, his expression filled with confidence "I want to see how strong this Ash really is, and if I win this battle" He turned his head towards me "Serena, will you go out with me?"

I froze on the spot upon hearing the ending. 'Go out with me', I like Calem as a friend, but nothing more. Or do I? Maybe I should, but then again I don't think I share mutual feelings with him. "Ooooooooo" The rest the group joined in while I could hear the girls squealing from excitement.

The moment went by too quickly, and I couldn't even answer until Calem did it for me "Alright it's a deal then!" He ran off while I was left shocked, I didn't even get to make a choice "Wait, where are you going?" Gary asked to a now far away Calem "Finding Ash of course!" He shouted

I immediately got up on my own two feet and ran after him. No way was I letting him do this, I would have given him an answer, but the rest of the group was there basically pressuring me to take the deal. "Calem wait! I do not consent to this"

I'm beginning to question how Calem even disappeared that quickly, never have I seen that boy run that fast. He was way too determined, but will find out the even if he wins, my answer is still no. I then caught a glimpse of him right as he was turning a corner. In front of Calem, there was a figure standing. He carried raven hair on top his head, z marks under his hazel eyes and was being accompanied by a yellow mouse pokemon. 'Oh no, I have to stop Calem before he does anything else'

I grabbed onto Calems hand before he could go any further. My face was red, but not from blushing or embarrassment but from anger. "Calem, I want to talk to you in private! Doing that right next to the group made me very uncomfortable and I coul-" He shushed me with his finger.

I thought that this would stop him and that we could come to an agreement, but unfortunately for me, this was far from over. "Serena, it's alright we can have that private discussion over some lunch" He said pulling up a grin and letting go of my hand, then continuing his walk towards Ash

"Calem, could you please not do this?" At this point, what I was doing could fall under the category of begging. As if it would change anything, Calem stood in front of Ash and I tried again before anything else could happen or let him have the chance to speak I intervened yet again "Calem, please. We already know how strong he is from the gym battle, you didn't even allow me to make my own decision" I tried reasoning with him, but he proceeded to ignore me. Calem didn't show me any sign that he was paying attention. It actually looked like he didn't even bother responding, his eyes filled with fire were locked with Ash's but his were the usual, non-caring.

"Listen here Mr. Bigshot" Why does he always have to start talking to Ash with an insult, he hasn't done anything to him and already bullies him. "You, Me, a battle. The one who wins is crowned the champion of the school" Calem stated the terms, and I looked onto Ash to see his response. He looked totally disinterested in Calem proposal "It will be a 3v3 battle." Wait Calem only has Chespin, or does that mean he had actually caught something and didn't bother to tell his closest friends?

I looked at Ash waiting for him to accept the offer, but at first it stood out as if Ash was analyzing Calem, not his request but his physical appearance. He must have noticed Calem's confidence as well. He looked at me and I blushed instantly, turning my head away "Not interested" Ash put sternly and coldly before progressing with his walk to class. My close friend then did something that caught me off guard, his expression changed to being annoyed "It wasn't a request, it was a demand" he said grabbing Ash by the shoulder

Time seemed to slow down as I watched onto the scene while Ash made quick work of Calem, he seemed to know how to defend himself. This person keeps getting more and more interesting by the day, while also revealing some mysteries. Ash stood next to Calem "I don't take orders from the likes of you" He mocked Calem, while he was struggling to get back up.

Calem got back up and threw a punch towards Ash, I closed my eyes waiting for the connection, which I was certain was going happen. And it did, yet it was the palm of a hand that caught it. I looked around as the situation was escalating by the minute, and students were gathering around to see what was going on. I peered at Ash's eyes which were filled with cold, watching his short-tempered rival.

I stood there wanting to avoid getting physically harmed, but viewed as Ash, without any bit of hesitation moved Calem's arm and bashed it with his elbow. Calem stepped back in agony, while demonstrating his pain through endless screeches, I thought it was over. I watched in horror as Ash dug his knee into Calem's thigh, causing him to fall to the ground, finally ending the fight.

I gasped and was extremely worried for him, I ran towards Calem to see if he was okay. Ash on the other hand simply stood there and dusting off his jacket shoulder. I felt bad for Calem and all, but I tried preventing this interaction, and he despite my attempts continued. He got put in his place, and I'm glad Ash did so, but I don't want to be sharing my gratitude in front of everyone. There will be another time for that.

"Your boyfriend has a bit of a temper and is very aggressive, maybe you should take him to an anger management class" The comment threw me off guard, I was surprised by the fact that Ash even made the comment. Did he see Calem and I as a couple?

My cheeks shifted color to a maroon and swiftly covered the entire area under my eyes. I tried to reply with a clear answer, but kept stuttering through out the sentence "H-H... I-m... C-Cal,lem isn't my boyfriend" I finally blurted out. A staff member of the school finally stepped in "What is the meaning of this!" I wanted to say something to make sure everything was a clear misunderstanding but Calem took advantage of the situation by putting all of this on Ash "He did this sir! I was merely trying to defend myself, when he attacked me and look what he did to me!" Calem said pointing to Ash while also implying the damage that was visible on his arm

"Anything to say Ash?!" The teacher yelled. This wasn't fair, I was about to speak my mind but Calem stopped me by holding onto my arm telling me to not say anything. Instead of defending himself, Ash shrugged.

"To Sycamore's office, NOW!" the professor demanded.

After Ash left for the office, I went with Calem to the infirmary, they couldn't do much with the limited equipment. There was only one option and that was for Calem to be sent to the hospital. I stood outside while watching Calem being picked up by his parents and taken away. I waved a final goodbye before being escorted back to my class.

Unfortunately for me, I could barely pay attention in class. My mind was full of conflict, I didn't know who to support. A close friend who was in the wrong, or a stranger I found to be in the right within the given context. Because of my lack of attention, the teacher told me to stay after class so that we can have a discussion. The lesson felt like an eternity, I kept looking at the clock, as it seemed to be moving slower and slower.

Class eventually ended and I made my way to the professors desk and sat down. He began scolding me about how I should pay attention in class, the stuff he was teaching was very important and so on. It lasted for a while, because I ended up explaining to him why I wasn't paying attention, not the who to side with part, but the actual fight itself, since I was practically a part of it.

Now done with the talk, I made my way out of the school and towards the bus stop. While going through the hallways I checked the time on my phone and noticed I had nearly no time to get to the bus. I sprinted as quickly as I could towards the bus stop, I saw the bus at the stop and was holding out my hand to signal it to wait while also screaming my head off "Wait, I'm right here don't go!"

My day got completely ruined. First the stupid fight and now the walk home. That was the last bus of the day that drives towards Vaniville town. "UUUUUH!" I yelled out, releasing my emotions. I was then met by someone speaking behind me "You know, walking isn't that bad. It's very relaxing and gives you an opportunity to spend some time with your pokemon"

I turned my head and it was Ash. He was walking towards me, I stood there dumbfounded. 'Did he not go home, wait he must have gotten detention...' A frown formed on my face.

"You coming or you gonna stand there all day?" He asked signalling me with his hand, I was still left a little shocked by the fact that he was actually speaking to me. I got unusually lost in my deep thought because he had already began walking, I shook my head entering reality once more and ran after Ash.
