Chapter 1

Oh, Halloween, the spookiest night of the year. The only night where dressing up in a wild costume and scaring the shit out of your friends is widely acceptable. Because, let's be real, if you dressed up as an undead witch in the middle of April, you'd probably get some funny looks.

Anyway, this tale begins on the day before Halloween, just as I was leaving work. Ugh, the front door was so close...

October 30th,
The Day Before Halloween...

After clocking out for the day, I quickly made my way to the elevator, looking over my shoulder to make sure I wasn't followed.

I had to make it to the front door before anyone else saw me. Unfortunately, just as the elevator doors were sliding closed, Tim stuck his hand through at the last second, causing the doors to open back up.

My shoulders slumped and I let out a not so subtle groan.

"Alisa, just the girl I was looking for." Tim said.

"What do you want, Tim?" I asked, defeated.

He handed me a piece of paper. "I'm formally inviting you to the company's annual Halloween party, per Miss Weiland's request."

I folded the paper and shoved it in my pocket. "Thank you, Tim, you can leave now."

He stepped into the elevator, the doors sliding closed behind him. "Actually, I have news... Miss Weiland's sister is gonna be there."

My ears perked up then. Cassidy Weiland. The baby sister. If Miss Weiland was the wicked witch, then Cassidy was the good witch. She was Miss Weiland's polar opposite. She was kind, outgoing, bubbly. The few of us that have worked here for a while have met her in the past. She used to be a regular at work functions, but hasn't shown for quite a few years now.

"I thought they hated each other." I replied.

"Oh, they still do. But, Cassidy is possibly up for an open supervisor spot at the company." Tim said.

I let out a laugh then. "No shit? Well, this oughta be interesting."

As the elevator dinged and the doors slid open, Tim faced me, walking backwards. "Are you gonna bring Cora?"

"Obviously." I replied.

Cora and I have been going steady for about a year now, of course I was going to bring her. I mean, why suffer alone?

"I was thinking about asking the new girl." Tim said.

"Monica?" I questioned.

He nodded, a little blush on his cheeks at the mentioning of her name.

I let out a laugh. "Good luck, sport."

Tim kept in stride next to me. "You think she'll say no?"

"Yes." Ramsey cut in as we passed her desk.

Tim turned to her. "You don't even know what we're talking about."

She shrugged. "If it has to do with a girl, it's gonna be no. I don't even have to know who it is."

I laughed again. "She has a point."

Tim folded his arms over his chest. "Whatever."

Just then, the elevator dinged once again, depositing Monica herself into the lobby.

"Speak of the devil." Ramsey said.

Monica smiled as she approached us. "Hey, Alisa, are you coming to the Halloween party?"

"I am. Actually, since you mentioned it, Tim here had a question for you." I replied, gesturing to Tim.

Tim's eyes went wide, his voice choppy. "Uh, well, I mean... I was just wondering if you... Well, I don't really know how to say it..."

Monica gave him a sincere look. "What's up, Tim?"

He shook his head. "Nothing, never mind, I'll see you guys tomorrow."

Then, he made a break for the front doors. We all watched him leave. "Is he ok?" Monica asked.

I shook my head. "I don't know. I've never seen him so tongue tied before."

   "Seriously." Ramsey added.

"Well, maybe I'll get to talk to him at the party." Monica replied before waving us off.

"I actually kinda feel bad for him." Ramsey said.

   "Yeah, me to."

And, without any further thought on the subject, I took my leave as well...

When I got home that night, I found Cora in the kitchen, inspecting her Halloween costume at the table.

"Well, well, what do we have here?" I asked, walking up behind her.

"My costume." She replied as I bent down to plant a kiss on her lips. "What're you going as?" I asked.

   "Bloody Mary." She said.

I frowned. "You know I hate her."

She flashed me a small smile. "I know, locked in the bathroom as a kid, scarred for life, blah, blah."

I took my coat off with a huff. "It was really scary."

Her face softened as she stood, wrapping her arms around my waist. "I know... But, it's just me. What's there to be afraid of?"

I looked into her eyes, a slight smile pulling at my lips. "Your acting."

She gasped, clutching her chest. "Low blow."

We broke into laughter as we sat down at the table. "What're you going as?"

"A slutty nurse." I replied, flashing her a wink.

She rolled her eyes, smiling. "That'd be the day."

I rolled my eyes back. "Fine, I'm going as a princess. It's the only time of the year I get to live out my childhood fantasies."

She raised an eyebrow at me. "Do you always go as a princess?"

I nodded. "Ever since I could walk."

   "Wow... Talk about dedication."

I shook me head, nudging her. "Anyway, do you wanna go to the company Halloween party with me tomorrow?"

She tapped her finger against her chin, seemingly deep in thought. "No, not really."

I took her hand in mine, giving her my best puppy dog eyes. "Will you go with me anyway?"

She pressed a kiss to my nose. "Of course."

"Yay." She giggled as I stood, pulling her up with me. "Now, how about you show your princess to the bedroom?"

She smirked. "Only if I can dress up in my costume."

I folded my arms over my chest then. "Never mind, I'm sleeping alone."

She followed behind me as I marched to the bedroom. "But, who'll protect you from the scary mirror chick?"

"Bite me." I replied, making my way into the bedroom, Cora grabbing my arm and spinning me around. "That could be arranged..."

My face flushed, she knew just what buttons to push. "Well... 'Tis the season, I suppose..."

She winked as she pounced on me, pushing us both back onto the bed, our giggles carrying on late into the night...
