1. Happiness
Sanity and happiness are an impossible combination - Mark Twain
"You can do this."
Tyler took a deep breath and started typing on the keyboard of his computer; beginning to write his goodbye letter.
He didn't stop, nor take a short break. He was determined to get it right.
He had been planning his suicide for months, and every method he thought of just didn't suit him. When he came across this method, he thought it was suitable for him, and he was determined not to fail.
When he finished writing, he clicked save, and smiled.
"Nailed it!"
Tyler got up from his chair and went into his kitchen to make his suicide smoothie.
He got out his blender, and laid out some milk, protein powder, and berries.
After pouring in all the ingredients, he went to the cabinet and grabbed a bottle of antidepressants.
At first, he pondered on whether or not to pour in the whole bottle, but he didn't want his suicide to fail. So he poured it all in.
After mixing the ingredients in his blender, Tyler started drinking his suicide smoothie.
As he drank, he looked out his window and saw a pretty blonde girl getting out of her car. She didn't see him, but he smiled to her and waved.
"So long, girl next door. I hope they find my body before the smell can become a problem for you."
When he finished his smoothie, Tyler went into his bedroom and put on his suit over his shirt and tie, then he sat down on the bed and patiently waited for the medicine to take effect.
After 20 minutes, Tyler didn't seem to feel drowsy or dozy. It was almost like his body didn't want to die.
Then, he tried laying down and closing his eyes; thinking it would make him sleep.
But it didn't.
In a panic, Tyler jumped from his bed and ran to his bathroom cabinet; drinking a whole bottle of sleep formula.
Then he tried laying down again. He held his breath; hoping his air supply would stop, but it never happened.
Tyler felt his mind spinning in circles. He had never felt so horrible in his entire life, all because he can't die.
He sat on the couch in his living room and cried; praying that he could succeed in his suicide, but it didn't work.
Nothing worked.
Filled with rage and fear, Tyler took a pillow and pressed it on his face as hard as he could; trying to suffocate himself.
But even with that much effort, it wasn't enough to end his life.
~
The next morning, Tyler felt like he was weak. He hardly slept and could barely keep his eyes open.
When he looked into the mirror, he saw his face was wrinkled and swollen, and his eyes were red and loopy. His tie was undone and his shirt was falling off his shoulders; revealing his nipple.
His hair was oily and gross, with spikes pointed upward on his head.
He did not look himself.
Before Tyler could process it further, there was a knock at the door. He went to the living room to answer; trying as hard as he could to stay normal.
When he opened the door, he saw it was the blonde girl from last night. She was dressed in a green dress, and she looked exquisitely beautiful.
Tyler had never seen such beauty in all his life.
The girl smiled and waved at him.
"Hi. You're Tyler, right?"
"Uh, y-yeah." He replied; distracted by her face.
"I'm Jenna Black. I live next door."
She held out her hand. Tyler shook it.
"Yeah. I've seen you sometimes, but we've never actually met before."
"Well, we have now!"
Tyler was so entranced by her beauty, he could help but stare at her. Jenna took notice and was a bit concerned.
"Can I get you anything?" She asked. "Orange juice? Maybe some medical attention?"
"Oh no." Tyler replied. "It's just lack of sleep."
Jenna chuckled.
"Oh, okay."
The girl looked plainly into the eyes of Tyler. It seemed to him that she was going to ask him something.
"Listen, can you do me a huge favor?"
Tyler still fell into the enchantment of Jenna's face, but he heard her plea.
"O-Of course."
"Great, because I completely forgot to make arrangements for my dog. Usually I leave him at home by himself, but I did some research and found out that if I leave my dog at home, it would kill him. So, I was just wondering if you could let him play around in your yard until I get back from work?"
As she asked him the favor, Tyler looked behind Jenna and saw what looked like a normal average canine dog, but in the form of a man dressed in a golden brown dog suit.
He was so stunned by what he saw, he completely forgot what Jenna asked him to do.
"So, would you do that for me?-"
"Huh?"
Jenna saw that Tyler was confused, and she didn't want to bewilder him with the trouble of watching her dog.
"Oh, Maybe this is too much to ask-"
"No, it's fine. I'll totally watch your dog for you."
Jenna got excited.
"Great! Thanks!"
She turned her back and started patting her knees.
"Come here, Jim! Come here, boy!"
The man slowly walks next to Jenna, who reaches out and starts rubbing him as Tyler laid eyes upon him.
"This is Jim. He's very sweet."
"Y-Yeah."
She hands him a bag.
"Here's some of his toys and snacks in case he gets hungry, and I'll be back in a couple of hours."
Jenna pats the man's head.
"Be a good boy!"
She looks back at Tyler and smiled.
"I really appreciate this!"
~
After Jenna left, Tyler stood face to face with the golden brown dog suited man. He was furry from head to toe, with a black painted nose and curly pink hair sticking from his forehead.
Tyler stared at him. He wasn't sure if he was dreaming, or if it was in his head, but he never thought he could ever face something like this.
The man looked at Tyler and shrugged his shoulders; wondering if he was going to let him in.
Tyler moved aside and him into his house, still stunned by what was happening.
The man walked around the living room and examined everything that was around him. Tyler stood and watched; not moving one bit.
Eventually, the man laid his eyes upon the sofa. He went up to it and wiped it down with his paw. Then he circled around and sat upon it.
Tyler put down the bag and stood in front of the man as he sat on the sofa.
He looked up at him and smiled.
"Very nice."
Tyler squealed timidly. He didn't think the supposed dog man could talk.
"I've sat on many sofas my entire life, and I could never get comfortable on any of them, but this one is the most comfortable."
The man continued to look at him.
"Your name is Tyler, is it?"
The boy nodded.
"Y-Yes, it is."
"Got any DVDs?"
"A few."
"I like Sex in the City."
The boy nodded again.
"Y-Yeah. It-It's good."
~
Suddenly, Tyler's phone started ringing. He reached into his pocket and got it out. When he read the contact, he saw it was his sister, Madison.
He looked to the man, who was still looking at him.
"It-It's my sister. I have to take this call."
"It's okay." The man replied. "Just pretend I'm not here."
Tyler nodded and lifted the phone to his ear.
"Hey, Maddy."
"So, are you excited?" She asked.
"Excited?"
"Yes, for your first day on your new job. A little anxiety may be a bit overwhelming, but I can promise you, once you get to know everything, it will be a whole new thing."
"Actually, about that-"
Tyler turned his head and saw the man looking out the window.
"D-Do you need to go out?"
He shook his head and shut the curtains. Madison immediately took notice of how her brother was talking, as if someone was in the house with him.
"Who are you talking to?"
Tyler quickly brought his phone back to his ear.
"Listen, Maddy. I appreciate you getting me this job, but I just don't think working in a medical institution will make me... happy."
"Happy?" Madison asked. "Do you think upsetting father by leaving the firm made him happy?"
"Look, I know I screwed up, but-"
"Do you think I enjoy helping mentally disabled people all day?"
"N-No."
As Madison continued to lecture him, the man came over and tapped Tyler on the shoulder.
"I need water."
He turned to him.
"Huh?"
"Water."
Tyler went over to the sink and prepared to make water for the dog suited man, but he couldn't figure out if he should make a bowl or a cup.
He continued to listen his sister rant about her job.
"So you see, Tyler? Nobody's happy! Now stop complaining! You need this job!"
"Right, thank you, Maddy. I appreciate the pep talk."
He started filling up the bowl with water.
"You're welcome. Now, remember. It's all about perception. You need to start changing the way you're seeing things. Okay?"
Tyler looked back to the dog suited man; still sitting on the sofa.
"I'll work on that."
