Find Your Calling
What would you do if you had all the money in the world? After you bought 14 luxury houses, 22 exotic cars, and traveled the world, what would you do then? The answer to that question is a big hint about what you were meant to do in life.
A lot of our motivations come from the desire for more money, which is actually a desire for more security. We study hard to get into a good university. We want a good university to get a good job. We want a good job to make more money. We want more money so we can do the things we couldn't before.
But once all that is taken care of, what then? Once all the material desires have been satisfied, what calls out to you? This is why the question in the first paragraph is so compelling. It separates the surface desires from the deeper desires of your soul. Some examples:
I would love to keep on traveling, learning about different cultures.
I want to find a way to give homeless people homes.
I want to be recognized as the top expert of my field.
I want to sample food from every country. I love food and want to know everything about it.
By unearthing your "impractical" desires, you are getting some idea of what might fulfill you. Knowing this might not help you immediately (thank you, endless bills) but at least you have it in the back of your mind. It can start guiding your decisions for what kinds of jobs might get you closer to fulfilling this desire.
