Progress 1: Miss Alola and the Moon

Kanto, where the sun rises to the west.... I think.

Here it is, the day where I shine, brighter than the sun itself! Not knowing where to start, be it taking my hair out of its usual Ponyta-tail just to put it back in, or pacing around the short space that is my room, I have no idea!

I sigh, falling back onto my bed, its warm pink covers something you'd never expect in this household. Yes, where Glalie is our signature Pokemon. Alright, so you know how people love Pokemon and stuff? Well, of course you would, since you've all probably heard it enough tines from Professor Oak to make you sick.

My family includes those people, and- "Glacia!" That's my cue! Springing off the bed with the speed of an energetic Pokemon leaping out of its pokeball, I grab my passport and my bag and hurry out the door.

I pass a couple of my sisters as I tread down the stairs, slowly waving my arms at them to practice my Alola greeting, my hands moving at the complete opposite speed as my legs.

"Glad you got Alola," one of my older sisters comment.

"Me too!" Slinging my bag over my shoulder, I leap down to the first floor once I reach the last two steps, hoping for that kind of adrenaline to be present when I step off my plane. Actually, double that adrenaline.

"Your sister won't be on the island you're headed to, but she'll be in the region, so watch out!" My mom calls to me from her spot in front if the kitchen stove, which may or may not be the most favorite place for a mom.

"Alright," I reply halfheartedly, although with my voice and energy it sounds like I'm excited either way. I want to go to Alola to explore, meet new friends, be amazing, not sit around and let my sister hog that all up! I'll be going on this journey for me, myself, and I, thank you very much!

"Don't clutter your bag with your books, either!" My mom shouts again, but I started tuning most of her words out weeks ago. Yep, that's about how long I've been preparing, so any advice she has to offer I've heard already.

Plopping down to sit lazily on the couch, since I know that right about now she's going to come and see me off, I close my eyes and imagine it. Alola.

"You'll learn to love Alola." Finally turning away from the stove, my mother sashays over to me, her silvery hair falling neatly down her back and her skin looking perfect, showing me that even though she's kind of old by now she still has plenty of spunk. That's what the elders call it, at least.

Never being able to be alone with just one thought, she bends down and reaches over to hug me, the aroma of fresh flowery perfume worn like her aura. My sister made that phrase, since I guess she got those kinds of powers.

"Tell me whenever you find yours, alright?" With my mother so close to my face, I'm forced to stare into her hypnotic icy blue eyes, eyes that can read even the most secluded soul.

"Definitely." As I was trying to explain mentally earlier, my family's element is Ice, with our signature Pokemon being Glalie, a nickname I've adapted, actually.

Everyone with elemental abilities, which should be most of the world by now, displays them in certain ways. The specifics have always been a mystery to me, but I think that's it. It's not something you'd learn in school, though, since this topic is pretty hush-hush amongst folks. Research can get you a better idea, but that's not an opportunity I took up.

"Well, that's all, then." Breaking away from me my mother hurries off back to the comfort of her kitchen, an ironic comfort zone for someone who's been branded the Ice Queen just because of her specialization.

Most people just assume that our family's as cold as our signature type, distant and bearing frozen hearts, like in that movie Build a Snowman or whatever it's called. However, behind close doors we're all pretty close-knit, like a neatly woven scarf that every member in the family has, but wears a certain way.

"Your Vulpix should be there when you arrive," my mother informs me, her head deep in the refrigerator. "A man with a blue cap should hand her over to you."

"Coolness!" Finally, I'm getting a Pokemon. Sure, I've used Pokemon before, although they always belonged to someone else. I'm like that person that just knows a lot about Pokemon from studying and stuff, but don't have my own. However, that all changes today!

"I hope you have fun." Blanche's unenthusiastic voice sounds from beside me, and I see the blank face of my uninterested sister set on the television screen. Even though she's a couch potato  home, she's top in her class.

In this region, and many others, attending a Trainer's School is mandatory at a young age, but kids usually graduate after they turn ten. Only after applying for eight more years of studying do some kids get a longer stay. Blanche, quiet yet smart, diligent but lazy, is one of those kids, and boy is she a smart Lava Cookie.

"Lap." Lapras' songlike call emanates from the backyard, and being Blanche's Pokemon, I assume that's who she's calling for.

"Melody." With Lapras being one of the few things she cares about, Blanche is up and running to take care of her beloved Pokemon.

"I wonder if you'll run into you-know-who there." An uninvited voice invades my left ear, and as a result I scoot over to Blanche's original spot, but I can't escape Crystal's incessant rambling.

"Since you two will have been the only members of this family exploring Alola, the competiton is real this time around." Crystal snaps her fingers, seeking me out and pointing at me. Once she's got me in her grasp, I can't escape from her.

"I don't want her to show me up, though." The truth slips out from my lips before I can even catch them. Crystal Clear, as they call her, the mass exposer of the entire school. She stayed back at the school with nothing but that in mind, exposing all the fakers and liars and cheats and innocent kiddy folk like me that just have some things they want to keep in their brain.

Some people's powers are linked to mental stuff, but that's another thing I'm fuzzy on. It's like Mareep are dancing around in my head, cutely innocent but harmful in the end.

"Some people say that ignorance is the most harmful thing in existence," mom wisely advises, beginning another one of her morality checks,"but knowing too much is the real danger."

"I'll be looking for the day when all your morals actually help me some." I wait for the clock to hit that lucky mark, and that's when I can finally leave. Lucky twelve, lucky twelve, anything but the lucky twelve go away!

  "It's twelve."

Blanche slides the back door open and walks in from the backyard patio, her abilities working like a charm. My head turns to the clock, and it is twelve! I guess the sound of my sister coming back inside blocked that out for a second.

"Well, then! I can't stay frozen to the sofa!" Hopping up, peppy as can be, I rush over to the door, smacking the knob with my hand to yank it to open.

"I'll see ya!" Some may call this a rather unaffectionate farewell, but the beginning of my several weeks was like a soap opera. Or tearfest. Or both.

"We'll be waiting." All three of them bid me farewell, their fair skinned hands somewhat limp. They've done this before with Natalie, after all. As well as Holly. And the rest of my sisters before that.

A grin spreads across my face, like when a suspenseful wriggly line crackles through a floor of ice. The word, the only word truly marking my departure, is as simple as a quick, "Alola!" and I'm out the door into the night.

More like out the door and into the taxi that's taking me to the airport. That holy destination must be moons away from my house, and speaking of moons...

"She sure looks pretty tonight, huh?" I begin some observatory chatter in an attempt to break the awkward lingering silence in the vehicle with its driver.

"Mhm," the man replies in a gruff voice, his eyes hidden in the darkness that plague the front seats of the taxi.

I, on the other hand, an relaxing in the jacuzzi that is the moon's light, here, in the back seat! Shredding away the last bits of darkness, a pale glow shines on me, causing me to smile as I gaze up at the holy moon.

"Say, wasn't there a Pokemon that represented this?" Although tonight the sky boasts a full moon, I could've sworn that there was a Legendary Pokemon that represented the crescent form, at least.

"You'll find all kinds of things in Alola." My ears draw out the man's words, and I'm eager to finally hear more than a grunt of a response.

  "Oh, yeah?"

"Who knows?" He shrugs, his eyes on the road and the city lights. He scratches his beard, which from here looks shaggy enough to be a Pidgey's nest. "You may even find yourself."

"What a novel idea!" And I say that because one, it sounds kind of cool somewhat, and two, that's the kind of line that would be in that sort of thing. Thinking it over, I guess it makes sense.

"I mean, after all, I have a certain something everyone in my family's been waiting for me to show."If what this man is saying is true, then that means I'll get my answers in Alola! My powers, or lack of for now, will reveal themselves in no time at all!

Back to my power thoughts, I wonder just what kind of ice ones I'll get. I think about these things all the time, actually. When I was younger, about six or so, I was enthralled by concepts I couldn't grasp. Soon that fizzled out, like the build up in fireworks, a quick burst and then a few flickers of light, then nothing but the endless night sky. Then I realized how it never ceased to amaze me, these concepts that even now I can't grasp. But when I find my destiny in Alola, I'll be an experienced Trainer that can grasp every concept.

"That's how the world works," the man says, as if he's continuing some conversation I zoned out way too early to be a part of.

"Yeah," I reply all the same. "It is." I close my eyes, the light from the moon filtering into the window and into my closed eyes. I dream of the moon, and how is must look in Alola. How far I must be from home, far from Blanche and Crystal and Melody and Mom.... Even now, in this space and time, it looks good. Good to be away.

"Then I guess your destiny awaits, young lady." The gruff voice of the driver brings me back to consciousness, and my eyes slowly open. No longer is the light of the moon in my eyes, but instead it's the bright, shining beam of light coming from all directions of the airport.

"Thank you," I yawn as the man opens the door. I step out of the yellow taxi, although in this light it's almost the same color as the streetlights in Saffron City.

"Alola." The man curtly tips his hat to me, seeing me off as I sleepily stumble my way on into the airport. The harsh light of the inside glares at my eyes, but after about thirty seconds of facing it do my eyes adjust and find comfort in it all.

I rummage through my bag as my legs automatically walk in the direction of the sign in counter, or whatever it's called since I'm no expert at airport stuff. My fingers move across a papery surface, and I use my sleeping hand to snatch my passport and yank it out.

"Alola," I hazily say my goodbye all to late to the driving man, but I'm positive he won't mind, anyway. It's Alola time!

Although normally I'm like a Jolteon that flashes its energy at every turn, falling asleep in the taxi has turned me into a Slowpoke. But my walking is zombified, yet dizzy and disoriented at the same time. I must look like a Spinda.

"The plane for Alola is to the right, dear." I bow to an old woman that guides my way, thankful for her kindness. I wonder if the people in Alola are anything like the ones here in Kanto.

As I follow the elderly woman's directions and walk over to where passengers are to soon board the plane to the tropical region, distant thoughts from my dream are scattered all throughout my mind.

"The moon, huh?" As I walk to my destined area I notice two bulletin boards with various postings. Most are random junk about tourist destinations and such, but each have a unique symbol. One is a mysterious purple, and vaguely looks like the crescent moon. The other is a  blazing orange, which reminds me of the sun.

"Are you boarding this plane, miss?"

"Ah, yes!" I whirl around to face a woman behind a counter, handing her my passport for recognition.

After a bunch of official stuff that happens and takes way more time than I thought, my mind is completely spaced out once I board the boat. Wait, sorry, the plane.

Once onboard I choose a seat by the windows and throw myself into it, the only reasonable objective in my hazy mind at this point being one thing and one thing only; sleep. I mean, another objective is to reach my destination, but the plane is taking care of that.

"That smart guy'll get it done," I  babble, before sleep falls on me like a shower of gentle feathers from a Tranquil. In my window is the moon once again, off to see me on my way. Goodnight, moon.

"Miss. We've arrived. Please wake up." Prodding me in the side if my head is a flight attendant who looks as if she doesn't want to venture any closer than that.

"Aloe vera?" I snort, just barely awake.

"Yes, if you want, but you have to get off the plane now," she responds in an exasperated tone.

She hands me my bag as soon as I get up and wipe my face, my freezing drool having been a bother. "Thanks." I show my courtesy with a polite bow, although it's a little obvious to me that that woman has almost home anyway.

Forgetting my entire Alola region greeting plan after one particular night's sleep, I groggily stumble off the plane and greet this sunny paradise with a yawn as big as a Hippowdon's.

Then, as quick as a Thunderbolt, it hits me. I have a Vulpix to get! I start off with a slow walk that increases in pace to get the rest of my tired body on board, and it doesn't take my legs long to consent, because within a few seconds I'm into a full sprint.

Only until I'm actually in the building do I slow back down to walking speed. I see a man standing around with blue hair, so maybe that could be it? He seems to be looking for someone, too.

"Excuse me!" I begin as I hurry over to him with a raised hand, indicating my arrival and that I'm the girl he's looking for.

"Yo, what're you tryna do, Pinky?" So I guess people in Alola have a somewhat... Course manner of speaking?

"I'm trying to get my Pokemon."

"Yo, give it up nice and quietly, Pinky, and then me and ma boys'll split." Acting as if he came out a rap video, the man starts gliding towards me, his arms swinging as if I've just challenged him to a rap battle.

Oh, no! It's my first day in Alola and already I'm being mugged by hoodlums! "I don't have any Pokemon or anything, so-"

"What? You ain't got any Pokemon?" The man berates me as if I've brought up foul play. "Man, you trippin', so I'm out." The man cruises away, and my rapid heartbeats slow themselves.

"You are Glacia?" But now I've spotted the man with the blue hat clear as day, the one I was supposed to find in the first place! It seems that that hoodlum was causing quite the ruckus, drawing people towards me to see what's making all the commotion, and one of them is the man of fate!

"My Vulpix!" An exhilarated feeling shoots throughout my body, waking me up immediately, like drinking coffee and experiencing the spike that follows!

"Ah, here you are." He lifts his hat and underneath it lies a white and red pokeball sitting amongst his nest of messy dark brown hair.

"Thank you very much!" I grab the pokeball, then hold it up to the open ceiling, the sun right above me, and strike a victory pose. "Come out, Vulpix!" With a flick of the wrist I release my new partner, excitement wrapping itself around my heart tightening as she takes form. The Alolan Vulpix.

"Vul?" Vulpix gazes up at me with her bright blue eyes, saying the first syllable of her name in a questioning tone.

"I'm gonna be your new Trainer, Vulpix!" I give her a gleeful greeting as I bend over and hold out a welcoming hand. "Let's win this island challenge together!"

"Vulpix!" Her eyes hold a blend of excitement and curiosity, and as she puts her paw in my hand I know right away that the emotions reflected from these same eyes are her sole reason for accepting. Well, her and I shall bond on this epic journey, I promise!

"Let's get going and explore!" The first thing on my agenda is to sightsee, buy stuff with my money until I'm broke, and then it's off to the region's Professor Kukui to learn something new!

I've already researched a ton of stuff about Alola, so I know enough about it to be able to leave all my books at home. Yes, with beautiful palm trees and a glittering ocean, Alola truly is tropical in the best way. "Let's hope we meet new friends, Vulpix!" I swear it, on the slumbering moon, that I'll have a blast!
