chapter twenty
Five and a half months later
"We're heading out to the mall mom!" I called, resting my hands on my belly. It was bigger and bigger each day and to see myself look like this was different but I've began to get used to it.
"Okay, we're going out with Jimmy and Paula, so if we're not here when you get back that will be why," My mom spoke as she walked up to me. "You have your phone on you?" She asked, her eyes looking down to my stomach then back up at my face.
"Of course. But the others should be here soon so I need to go," I pulled the strap to my backpack up on my shoulder, and she kissed my cheek before letting me go, and I walked outside to see the girls pulling up.
It was just Shelby, although I was expecting it to be all of the girls. At least Natalie too, who's close with Shelby now. "Where are the others?" I asked, getting into the passengers seat. She just shrugged as I buckled up, and after waiting a few moments to make sure I was secure she drove off into the direction of the mall.
"I think they had other things to do, I'm not sure though." She finally answered.
"Oh, okay," I replied, not wanting to push her. If she didn't know, she didn't know. Natalie's probably with Michael, and who knows what Beth and Nora were busy doing. "So what's the plan for today?" I asked, lighting running my fingers along my stomach. It was a habit of mine, and I always found myself doing it.
"The mall, like I said. We're going to see a show," She smirked, and I sent her a confused glance.
"A show? At the mall?" I asked, and she nodded. "Which one?"
"It's titled, Ashley Swift Gets What She Deserves." She motioned her hand out, and my eyes widened.
"What? How?" I asked.
"I mayyyy have been following her around lately, and I've noticed she goes to the mall every Saturday. She gets her hair and nails done, and I've done the liberty of sneaking in and putting Nair in the shampoo the lady uses to wash her hair, along with paying my friend who works at the Kiosk she goes to for Starbucks to add extra stuff in her drink," Shelby explained.
"That's crazy," I mumbled, "But I mean, she kind of deserves it. I feel bad for thinking that but seriously, she made my life a living hell."
"And you didn't even do it. It'll all fall back on me - if they find out." Shelby smiled. "I love getting back at people who deserve it, that should be a job."
"You'd be great at it," I laughed, as she pulled into the mall parking lot. After a few minutes of finding a parking spot close to the building we got out and walked in, sitting in an area as we waited for Ashley to get in.
"So how did this all start? Ashley treating you like this?" Shelby asked.
"Well, we were best friends, then Natalie came along and she didn't like the idea of us being friends with Natalie. Then she realized Nash was Natalie's brother, and thought he was the hottest boy alive. He became close with me, didn't like Ashley all that much. She hated that, too, and got very jealous I was spending a lot of time with the both of them so she began to spread rumors around school about me. She was the most popular girl so everyone obviously believed her, which is annoying because none of them true." I spoke, "She just likes everything to herself and if she doesn't get her way she does any and everything she can to mess up someone's life."
"She sounds annoying," Shelby groaned, leaning back in her chair. We then changed the subject to the baby, talking about the due date and such.
"What are you thinking of naming them?" She asked.
"I don't know, Teddy asks me that all the time." I shrugged. "But if it's a girl, I really like the name Mackenzie, after my dad of course."
"And for a boy?" She asked.
"Teddy and I really like the name Peter," I spoke. Before Shelby could voice her opinion on the name she jumped forward, seeing Ashley. We watched as everything went down, and the moment Ashley began to throw her fit we left due to not wanting to be seen and for everything to be tracked back to us.
We laughed as we sat in Shelby's car and she drove off, my chest hurting from laughing the way I had. "Did you see her face?"
"Yes! It was priceless!" Shelby exclaimed. "I think we deserve food now,"
"Me too," I agreed.
"What are you craving?" She asked.
"Anything but Mexican food. For some reason tacos just don't sit well with my stomach right now," I explained, and she nodded.
"Understandable. How does chicken sound?" She questioned, and I nodded.
"Amazing."
"Okay, we can go to the nearest chicken place then maybe head back to your house?" She questioned and I nodded, signaling for her that I was okay with that. I'd prefer to lounge around the house anyway, I already hated being active way before being pregnant, so I'm ten times lazier now that I am.
"How are you and Teddy?" Shelby asked, breaking the silence.
"We're good." I nodded, "I mean I still get nervous he's going to leave but, he hasn't shown any sign and he's been amazing for me throughout this pregnancy. He practically lives with us, he's almost always there and he helps around with the siblings and me, and pays my parents rent and helps out with groceries."
"That's great, how long have you been together now?" She asked.
"Five or six months," I answered.
"What if he asked you to marry him?" She randomly questioned, and my head snapped to look over at her.
"What?!"
"Hypothetically. Like, you're obviously meant to be together, even with your past you guys have moved past that and built new fun memories. He's not planning on asking or anything at least right now but like just the thought of it crossed my mind," Shelby spoke. "Like, you're having a baby and he's pretty much going to treat that child like his, so it's understandable."
"I don't know, I haven't really thought about marriage before. Like I always wanted to get married before having a kid but since that guy showed up, he kind of ruined my future plans." I shrugged.
We then arrived in the drive thru and our conversation halted just so Shelby could order what we wanted. After getting our food and paying she drove into the parking lot and we sat there, eating while we talked.
"I get that. They still haven't found him, have they?" She asked, and I shook my head as I stayed silent. I really didn't want to talk about it, but I did bring him up. But it wasn't because I needed to have a conversation about him, just to say he screwed my life plans up.
"Anyways," She noticed my mood change. "I think if he did ever ask, whether it be tomorrow or two years from now, you should say yes. I never liked Teddy all that much except for thinking he was super hot, and appreciating the help he gave us in the beginning, but he's matured a lot since then and it's all because of you."
"Thanks," I spoke, not knowing what else to say. It got silent between us and we both ate our food, Shelby getting out of the car to throw the trash in the trash can that was in the lot. She began to drive back to my house after that, the only sound in the car being the music playing on the radio.
We weren't gone for very long, but at the same time I felt like I'd been out of the house for years. I don't know why, but I really didn't know why the thought of marrying Teddy excited me. We've only been together for a few months, and marriage is a serious thing. I've already had a lot of mess ups in my life and I've done good with not doing anything else stupid recently.
Arriving to my house, I frowned as I saw not only both of my parents cars, but also Jimmy and Paula's. I thought they were going out? Maybe I heard them wrong or something.
On top of that a few other cars were there and I glanced at Shelby, who didn't say anything as she shut the car off and got out. I followed behind and we walked up to my house, where I opened the door.
"SURPRISE!"
