ON THE 12TH HOUR OF the first day of October, 1989, 43 women around the world gave birth. This was unusual only in the fact that none of these women had been pregnant when the day first began. Sir Reginald Hargreeves, eccentric billionaire and adventurer, resolved to locate and adopt as many of these children as possible. He got seven of them.

Darla Cho was one of the forty three children born on that special day from a mother who wasn't even pregnant when the day started and when Sir Reginald Hargreeves came and offered her parents money, they refused. Patrick and Kira Cho saw their unexplainable child as a miracle, that their prayers for a baby were finally being answered by God and they definitely weren't going to give her up for some cash, no matter how much he was willing to pay. What they didn't find out until years later was that their miracle child was given abilities far beyond anything they could've imagined or comprehended.

Darla didn't know whether or not she was blessed or cursed, but her parents seemed to think it was the former and they made sure to keep them a secret, including from their closest relatives. From a young age, Darla has been able to hear people's thoughts even though most of the time she doesn't want to, she just can't help it. She used to dream of using her abilities for the greater good - like the Umbrella Academy - but her parents would constantly remind her that she had to hide who she really was otherwise people would treat her as if she was a freak, an abomination.

Darla heeded their words, never telling a single soul who she truly was and that included the love of her life, Callum Longstride, someone she thought would be there for her through anything. Nineteen and pregnant wasn't where she expected to be in life and to make matters worse, the man she thought loved her, ran off, screaming and shouting that he didn't want the child as he went. Desperate and alone, Darla wanted to reach out to her parents but knew that they would be disappointed and it was something she couldn't take after watching the love of her life abandon her. It was raining on that miserable night so she took shelter in the nearest building possible - The Icarus Theatre - which is where she met Vanya Hargreeves, a girl who saw how broken Darla truly was and took her in out of the goodness of her heart.

It would be an understatement to say Vanya was a friend, because to Darla and her unborn child, she was a Guardian Angel, a miracle. Vanya was there when Mulan was born; she was there to help Darla back into school after having the baby and she was there to help the young mother back onto her feet. Without Vanya, Darla didn't want to know what would've happened; the Hargreeves woman had saved her life. So when her father died of a heart attack, Darla felt the need to repay one of the many favours and be there for her when she needed it most.

This is what led Darla and Mulan Cho to the Umbrella Academy, a place which trained people with super powers, like them and the six strange siblings Vanya once had. And one of them in particular seemed to get on Darla's nerves with his Leather, Spandex, or whatever it was he was wearing, his sarcastic remarks and his seemingly endless supply of knives. But even she had to admit, he was stuck in her head, just like she was in his.

Darla: Darla has the ability to read and control minds. Her powers are much like Professor X's in the sense that she can control people via their minds and can delve deep into someone's head to find memories and thoughts. She can also hear what Ben's saying, but can't see him.

Mulan: Instead of reading minds and thoughts like her mother, Mulan can read and feel emotions (empathy). This means that she can sense when people are sad and always tries to cheer them up. Her empathy allows her to feel Ben's presence.

notes:

• Diego and Darla start of teasing and insulting each other, but over the eight days, they form a bond and though neither would admit it, they really like each other. They get together at the end of season 1 but season 2 separates them across the timeline.

• Darla is sweet, kind and selfless but if anyone was to mess with her daughter, she would freak out and go all protective.

• Darla's very intelligent and is a science teacher at the high school, she's the sort of teacher who's always there for you but can tell off the ones messing around. She doesn't take any shit.

• Mulan likes to be called 'Lana' by anyone other than her family. She's incredibly smart for her age and is very sassy. Even though she's a child, she's very protective over her mother and her Aunt Vanya.

• She was given the name Mulan because Darla wanted her daughter to grow up 'loyal, brave and true' and she didn't want Mulan to rely on a man to solve her problems; she wanted her daughter to fight her own battles, like her namesake.

• Darla met Vanya when she was 19 and pregnant with Mulan. The father had abandoned them when he found out and Vanya felt sorry for her and took them in. Vanya knows about their powers but isn't spiteful about it, she accepts them and loves them anyway. Vanya is Mulan's godmother and helped babysit when Darla went off to college to become a teacher. She also helped the young mother get back onto her feet and has been in her life ever since. When they hear about Reginald's death, Darla feels obligated to go with Vanya to support her because it's her turn to be there for her.

PART ONE
umbrella academy season 1

• Darla and Mulan go with Vanya to Sir Reginald Hargreeves' funeral where they meet the rest of the superhero family. Darla and Mulan try to hide their powers from the academy but are revealed to them later on. Later that night, Darla gets a phone call from her friend Eudora Patch, asking her to have a look at a crime scene, because she found out about Darla's powers and asks for her help from time to time. Darla and Mulan both realise Klaus is gone after the Academy's attacked and try to find him. The attack on the academy is what revealed Darla's powers and therefore Mulan's. Darla goes with Allison to find Vanya and the amount of things going through Vanya's head and the pure power of it weakens and hurts Darla.

PART TWO
umbrella academy season 2

• You can decide when Darla arrives but Mulan lands with Luther who becomes incredibly protective over the girl, she's his last connection to their past. When Five and Vanya arrived at the boxing, Mulan then goes with them and is heartbroken when she realises Vanya doesn't remember anything. Diego cries when he sees Mulan and is determined to protect her and reunite her with her mother. On the other hand, Darla has a job as a waitress and is employed at Hoyt's party where she reunites with her daughter and Diego. Darla doesn't trust Lila because she can't get into her mind. The mother and daughter hang out with Allison, Vanya and Klaus before going to meet Sir Reginald Hargreeves at the restaurant.

When Umbrella Academy season 3 comes out, it needs to be added to this timeline.
