niko knocked on haeyi's door before gently pushing it open and and calling out to her friend.

"in here..." she heard from haeyi's bedroom, and cautiously treaded forward. when niko approached the room, she found the door already open and her friend sitting on the edge of her bed, hands tucked under her thighs and eyes on the ground.

niko gave the door a soft tap to grab haeyi's attention without startling her. she heard the younger sniffle and instantly made her way inside. she crouched in front of haeyi and gently collected her hands, holding them between hers as she kissed the girl's fingers. "i'm here to listen if you want to talk about it."

she watched as her friend's face began to twist with incoming tears, and niko moved to sit next to her, wrapping an arm around haeyi and carefully positioning the girl's head onto her shoulder. she ran her fingers through hae's bright orange hair as she spoke. "it's alright now, i'm here."

"i just..." she managed between cries. "i don't understand how we got here..." niko's nose burned when haeyi threw her arms around her. "why do people do the things they do?"

when niko realized haeyi was referring to the rumors, her breath caught. "they're not true, hey. kay made them up, all the rumors, all of it."

haeyi's cries only grew harder against niko's shoulder. "h-how could she? how could she do that? she knows... she knows what this means to m—"

her voice finally gave out, swallowed up by the sound of her own sobs.

she didn't have to say anything else for niko to understand. haeyi had mentioned her late brother only once, and it was when she was drunk. this was before men were allowed to come out as victims themselves, and when he was turned away by their family, he had no one else to run to. it got the better of him, as haeyi put, and even drunk she couldn't finish the story of what happened to him.

she was only a child when it happened, her brother in high school, but when she learned the truth of his passing and what he had to suffer through alone, she left home and lived with her uncle and aunt, who were currently out of the country.

"i never want to speak to her again." niko heard haeyi say after a few moments, her words stated harshly. "don't add me back there, nik."

"i won't, sweetheart. i promise."
