niko sat in the wooden chair ami had put in her bathroom, staring at her reflection in the mirror. when she'd gotten the hair dye text, she thought it was going to be her dyeing ami's hair.

now her head was coated in thick dye as ami hummed the animal crossing theme behind her.

"are you sure this is safe..?" niko asked, fingers inching toward the box of dye. ami noticed and swiped the box away. "totally! and i'm definitely doing this right!"

"have you dyed hair before?"

crickets.

"ami—"

"it's fine!" the girl exclaimed bubbly. niko let her stress out with a sigh and sank back into the chair. she used to dye her hair a lot with chiyo, but that was when they were dumb and in high school.

it was quiet for a moment before niko couldn't bite her tongue any longer. "... are you sure—"

ami stepped back and placed both wrists on her waist, folding her hands forward so that none of the dye would get on her clothes. "niko tsukina."

"right. sorry."

smiling at the cute sound of the younger's voice, ami shook her head and went back to work. "when was the last time you had black hair?" she asked as her fingers gently massaged the dye into a teal lock of niko's hair.

the girl shrugged carefully. "i'm not really sure. i had the dirty blonde for so long, it started feeling more natural than black hair."

that, ami understood. she kept her hair brown, so whenever her darker roots grew it, it was strange. "i get that," she said. "and not that it matters, but i think the blond suits you."

niko smiled. "thanks, ami."

it took about an hour for ami to finish dyeing niko's hair, and another for the girl to wash, dry, and style her new hair. ami didn't even know niko had bangs, and with her permission, trimmed them back to how they'd originally been.

niko had been a bit startled by her new appearance, but she quickly fell in love with her. she didn't want to admit it out loud, but she looked like her mother. her smile didn't fade the rest of that evening.

the fresh noirette pulled a cut a loose string off of the pants ami had placed on the bed for her. ami had gone shopping beforehand, face-timing niko along the way to see what she liked and didn't like.

what she'd ended up with was a pair of washed-grey low-rise jeans. ami found a think belt she hasn't worn since high school, and niko thought it was too funny-looking to leave out.

on the top, ami loaned her a pale blue bralette, but when they realized how short it was on niko's chest, they opted to throw a beige netted t-shirt overtop.

ami had her own opinions about the look, but she knew niko's taste was unique, and she wanted the girl to have fun comfortably.

they accessorized the look, and after ami finished getting dressed, they were out the door. the plan was to meet the boys at a low-key restaurant where they wouldn't be spotted and then head to a movie after. the two girls agreed early on that ami would drive them there, and they'd split up if needs be.

once in the car, niko was getting herself buckled as ami was supposed to be finding a good playlist when the older suddenly screamed.

jolting upright, niko's wide eyed wildly searched around the car for an intruder or a bug, whatever could have scared ami, but when she settled her gaze to the side, she realized ami was looking at her phone.

"what is it?" niko asked, desperately trying to slow her raging heartbeat.

without words, ami pulled her phone up for niko to see the screen. when she did, her face broke out into a smile so big her face ached.

on the phone was an article. one titled, 'RUBY ENT. Prod WOOZI announced he will be marrying his long-time girlfriend'.
