Chapter Twenty-Three
Askook was cursing to himself under his breath as he ran through the streets. When he heard that there was an akuma, getting away from his sister and Weylen proved to be a difficult task. He couldn’t leave them scared and alone, but he couldn’t ignore the fact that his help was needed.
He came up with an excuse, that he needed to help clear the streets of people. He didn’t exactly lie about what he was going to do, he just didn’t specify how and what he would be wearing when he did so. He transformed behind an abandoned bus and followed the screams.
Askook bit his bottom lip as his fingers hovered stiffly over his bracelet. Ladybug and Chat Noir were already fighting the akuma from what he could tell. Should he use his power now?
When he began to arrive at the scene, he pulled the snakehead back on the bracelet and ushered a few civilians into hiding. When the streets were clear, he decided to join in the action. When he got up to the rooftop, he didn’t even have time to announce that he was there.
In slow motion, a burst of light hit Chat Noir square in the chest and he was ordered to reveal his civilian name. Askook’s face reflected Ladybug’s as Chat Noir said clear as day, “My real, civilian name is Adrien Agreste.”
The air in the raven head’s lungs froze. Excuse him? What did he just say? Ladybug’s bluebell eyes caught his own before he could utter “Second chance.”
Askook was standing on the street and could hear the ruckus going on up on the rooftops. He shoved the knowledge forcefully obtained to the back of his brain. Hawkmoth couldn’t know such an important hero’s real identity.
Figuring the people would be safe down here, Askook carefully jumped his way up behind Nier and texted Ladybug. He saw her look at her yo-yo and read the text. She nodded in response before she snapped it shut and began to spin her yo-yo.
The bluennette stepped closer to her blonde partner as they continued to spew lies of their civilian lives. Just as the plan went, Nier shot a burst of light at Chat Noir’s chest ordering his command of obedience and truth, and the blonde couldn’t do anything to stop it.
Askook took this moment to pop out of the shadows slam his foot into the back of Nier’s knees. The burst of light hit Chat Noir’s chest, and Ladybug was quick to step up behind him and cover his mouth. Her hand flew to his pocket, and she pulled out the polka-dotted bouncy ball. She threw it just in time for it to bounce up from the ground to knock the toy gun from Nier’s hand before he had the chance to shoot anymore.
She whispered in Chat’s ear to go help civilians so he didn’t get stuck telling their secrets to the world. He agreed and left the scene. Askook pinned Nier’s hands over his head and grit his teeth.
Ladybug stomped on the toy gun and a purple butterfly slipped out from the cracks.
“No more evil-doing for you little akuma, it’s time to de-evilize!”
The victim turned back to normal as he blinked harshly at the sky. In the midst of his confusion, the snake hero released the civilian’s wrists.
“What-what happened?” The civilian took in shaky breaths, fighting against the tears in his eyes.
“You were akumatized.” Ladybug kneeled and hugged him. “And I would like to help you. You can talk to me.”
Askook rested a hand on the civilian’s shoulder and gave him a reassuring smile for setting off to find the black cat.
The hero found Chat Noir and pulled him out of hearing distance of everybody else. “There was a mistake.” Askook quickly informed, fingers twitching at his wrist. “The akuma got you and you said your civilian name.”
“But Ladybug stopped me before that could happen.” Chat said as he ran a hand threw his hair.
“No, that happened after my second chance. I managed to reset everything so Hawkmoth didn’t have the chance to hear who you really are. But second chance doesn’t reset my memory.”
The blonde was too stunned to speak for a moment. His finger clenched in his hair.
“So you know.”
Askook swallowed against the lump in his throat and nodded. Chat Noir sighed and wrung his hands out.
“Okay. Okay. Not what I wanted to hear, but okay. Listen, you can’t tell Ladybug. She has enough on her shoulders, she shouldn’t have to deal with my mistakes. You know where to find me when you’re ready to talk about this.” Askook nodded stiffly. “For now, let’s you and I talk with the news reporter.”
----
Luka threw himself face down on the couch and groaned. He wasn’t ready for what had happened today. He learned delicate information and he forced himself to not piece together Ladybug’s identity. He respected her, he couldn’t betray her trust.
“Uncle Luka, what’s wrong?” Weylen asked as he tugged at Luka’s jacket. The raven head turned his face to meet the curious gaze of his favorite little kid in the world.
Sitting up, Luka pulled his nephew into his lap. “Sometimes…” Luka trailed off thinking of what to say. “Sometimes I get frustrated because my brain won’t shut up.”
Weylen tilted his head and pressed a finger to his lips.
“Don’t you play your guitar when you feel like that?” The little boy pondered. Luka chuckled and ruffled the brown hair.
“Yeah buddy, I normally do.”
“Then what’s diffewent?”
Luka didn’t have the answer to the question asked. He stumbled upon something he shouldn’t have. Something that only Ladybug, Master Fu, and Adrien should know. But he couldn’t get rid of the information. Everything pieced together slowly and Luka hated it.
So why didn’t he express himself with his guitar like always? It was a good question indeed.
“I’ll tell you what, bub. If you bring me my guitar, I’ll teach you how to play.” Weylen cheered as he hopped off Luka’s lap and rushed towards his room.
After a while of Luka teaching Weylen the cords, a knock came from his door. Checking the time, he realized it was Juklea coming to pick up Weylen.
“Come in!” He shouted as he eased the guitar away from the little boy. Luka took him from his lap and placed him on his feet.
“Momma!” Weylen cheered, running to hug Juklea’s leg.
“Hey there, kiddo, how was your day?” She asked as she kneeled down to his eye level.
“It was great!” He said with a big goofy grin. “I learned to play guitar!”
“That’s cool! Why don’t you run along and grab your things? When we get home you can help make dinner. Sound good?”
“Can we make blueberry muffins?”
“Only if you clean up your toys from the living room.”
Weylen ran into Luka’s room with a cheer and went to grab his bag. Luka pushed himself off the couch. He grabbed a hanger with plastic wrapped around an outfit.
“Marinette finished Weylen’s costume yesterday, she asked me to give it to you. She also said everything should fit well, but if everything doesn’t then contact her.” His sister nodded and took the hanger.
“I- uh…” Juklea began, a light blush dusted over her cheeks from embarrassment.
Luka smiled reassuringly. “You know you can ask me anything.”
“Well, it’s just that…” Juklea looked at the ground. “You’re happier.” She mumbled.
Tilting his head to the side, Luka braced himself against the wall. “How so?”
“Oh, well, uh it’s just when you came into town again, you were looking for something, kind of. I could hear it in your music, your heart was calling out for someone.” Her fingers fidgeted with the sleeve of her shirt.
Luka hummed thoughtfully. Weylen asked from Luka’s roof if he could bring a toy with him.
“Only if you can bring it back.” Luka turned his attention back to his sister with a raised eyebrow. “Was there more?”
“Your music changed… it was the smallest change, but still noticeable. It was like you found your muse.” Juklea narrowed her amber eyes at the ground. “It’s kind of like in high school. When you had your muse then.”
Luka ran his fingers through his already messy hair as he contemplated what to say. He couldn’t really find something that was suitable for this conversation and he sighed.
“You have very nice observation skills. If you hadn’t pointed it out, I don’t think I would have noticed the change in my music.” Luka chewed his bottom lip. He had noticed, but he couldn’t find out what was different. A muse. Did he really find himself one?
“I take it you haven’t thought about it.”
“That’s just the teacher in you.” Luka chuckled. “Noticing things that no one thinks about. That’s what makes you special.” He kissed her cheek.
Weylen walked out of the room with his spiderman backpack. He was bouncing with excitement.
As Juklea and Weylen began to walk out, Luka’s phone rang a familiar tune and he perked up as he reached for his phone. That was the song that he gave Marinette for when she called.
“Whoever that is-” Juklea began, tearing Luka’s attention away from his phone. “That’s a person who you let play with the strings of your heart.”
She gave him a smile before closing the door behind her. Luka pursed his lips. Play with the strings of his heart? Marinette? He grunted before answering the phone.
“Sorry to keep you waiting.” He heard cabinets closing in the background.
“It’s no problem. Are you busy April 5th from noon to about three?”
Luka raised his eyebrows as he shuffled towards the calendar on the fridge. Oh hey, look at that. He was doing absolutely nothing.
“No.” He heard Marinette take in a deep breath from the other end.
“I got invited to a wedding, and I wasn’t planning on going to go because I didn’t have anyone to go with. But, uh, I was wondering if you would be my plus one.”
Luka grabbed a can of sprite from the fridge and made his way over to the couch. Wedding, huh? He mulled over the list of people that both he and Marinette knew.
“Who’s wedding is it?”
“Um, Jagged Stone and Penny’s.” Luka hummed, pulling a pillow to support his head. He searched his brain for an image of Penny.
“If you don’t mind me asking, how do you tie into their wedding?” From what he recalled, she said Jagged Stone hasn’t contacted her for almost a year and a half.
“Penny asked me to help tailor and fix up her dress and asked me if I would join.”
Luka could imagine Marinette’s cheeks dusted with the slightest blush, and her bottom lip working its way between her teeth. He couldn’t help the smile that slipped on his face.
“I’ll be your plus one if you’ll be mine.”
Marinette giggled nervously. He could almost feel her cheeks heating up.
“Sorry?”
Luka shifted as he rested his next to his ear and inspected his chipped nail polish.
“Marinette Dupan-Cheng. I would love to acquaintance you to the wedding. Will you acquaintance me after the reception is over?” Marinette took her time to respond, and it drove him absolutely crazy.
“Depends. What are you doing after 3 pm?” She responded finally. Luka let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding.
“Spending time with you if you’ll allow me.”
“You didn’t answer the question.”
Luka grinned as he ran a hand threw his hair. A very clear image filled his thoughts of the place he wanted to bring her.
“I’ll pick you up at eleven.”
“Do I bring anything extra for after the wedding? Like gym shoes?”
“Just clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and your pretty little smile.”
