Chapter Twenty-Four
“I can’t thank you enough.” Penny beamed at Marinette as she traced the patterns on her white dress. “I was afraid I wouldn’t find anyone in time to help fix it, but you went above and beyond with it!”
“It was no problem, really.” Marinette insisted as Luka joined her at her side.
The reception was almost over, and Luka and she were about to leave themselves. Jagged Stone was draped over his bride’s shoulders, hugging her waist and pressing kisses to the side of her face.
“I told you, my dear, Marinette Dupan-Cheng is more than capable of the job. She is even more talented now than she was when she was fifteen, and that is saying something.” Jagged said, exchanging a warm smile with the bluennette. “Now let’s leave the two love birds alone. Crete, Greece here we come.” The married couple waved goodbye before moving to other people to thank and say good-bye.
Marinette’s cheeks felt like they were on fire, and she glanced at Luka. He was looking at the ground with a smile. She looped her arms through his and tugged him gently to the door.
“I’ve got to change, and then we can go enjoy what you have planned for us.” She assured, glancing down at what she was currently wearing. Her dark orange blouse was tucked into her black skirt. The shirt didn’t exactly allow for much arm movement.
Luka stopped her for a second and looked deeply into her bluebell eyes. “You know,” he whispered, “You look absolutely lovely.”
Marinette bit her bottom lip. Sure she looked decent, but he looked absolutely stunning. He wore a black button-up shirt with the sleeves rolled up above his elbow, exposing his arms that were to die for. The red tie wrapped loosely around his neck lifted and fell with his breathing. Black jeans absolutely finished the outfit, hugging his ass and legs perfectly.
Several outfit designs came to mind that would capture the same feeling of attractiveness.
“Your face got redder, what were you thinking about?” Luka pondered. He was studying her face intensely, noting how her freckles weren’t as noticeable as they were in the winter.
“I uh…” Marinette’s fingers her playing with the bracelet on her wrist as she tried to think straight. Which was kind of hard when she was close enough to be sharing the same air with one of the most gorgeous people here.
Luka chuckled, closing his eyes with the image of Marinette dancing around his head. “Go get changed.”
The bluenette relaxed a little seeing him in such a light-hearted mood, but still on edge with the fact that there was no way to calmly tell him how hot he was. She nodded and rushed out to Luka’s car to grab her bag.
“You really are something.” Tikki giggled. “It’s high school all over again, you can barely speak a full sentence around him.”
Marinette pouted, slipping on a pair of shorts and shoving her shirt in her bag. “How can anybody manage a complete sentence when there’s a god standing in front of them?”
“You sound like a fifteen-year-old girl.” The red kwami teased.
“Hey, it’s my job to notice how a person looks. I was simply admiring how to put together he looked.”
“Is that drool at the corner of your mouth?”
Marinette narrowed her eyes as she covered her mouth. Tikki laughed. The red kwami was thrilled that her holder was definitely getting better. And she noted a lot of it was because of Alya and Luka.
“I think being a fashion designer is a good reason to look at people’s clothes and admire them. It’s good inspiration.” Marinette exclaimed as she slipped her skirt off and tugged shorts on.
“I’m sure it is.”
The bluenette hastily opened her purse for the kwami after pulling on an old graphic t-shirt. She grabbed her bag and walked out, eyes scanning the large room for the man she came with.
“Marinette!” A voice called, turning her head, she saw Nathaniel grinning back at her while Marc stood slightly behind him. Luka was standing in front of them, waving her over.
“I didn’t realize you two were here!” The fashion designer said.
Nathaniel nodded as he lifted his and Marc’s intertwined hands. “I was surprised to see you here too, honestly. Did he invite you out of the blue or…?”
“I helped touch up the bride’s and the bridesmaids’ dresses.”
Marinette took a second to take in the couple in front of her. Marc’s hair was nearly the same length as her hair and it was pulled back. Bangs framed his shy eyes, and he stood behind Nathaniel like a child would its mother. Nathaniel on the other hand had his head tilted up and his chest puffed out slightly. His red hair sat in a controlled mess on top of his head, and the sides were shaved.
“Since Marc is so good with words, Jagged had him help write his vows. And I painted a portrait for them. Are Alya and Nino here?” Nathaniel glanced behind him.
Marinette shook her head. “They’re not here, but they were invited.”
They chatted for a little while longer before Luka pressed his hand against her lower back. She glanced up at him and he gave a small smile.
“It was a pleasure speaking to you two, I hope we get the opportunity to do it again soon. Marinette, I do believe it’s time we start to go.” Luka nodded his head towards Marc and shook Nathaniel’s hand.
“Yeah, me too. So we’ll see you at Brooke’s Bowling Alley?” Nathaniel tilted his head, hair falling into his eyes.
“I certainly will try to be there,” Luka assured.
“I think I can squeeze it in.” Marinette winked and giggled.
“Pass on the news to Nino and Alya, I’m sure they’d enjoy it.”
Marinette sighed when they walked outside, she rubbed her arms and squinted. “It’s freezing in there.”
It was a rather fair day out if she said so herself. Grey clouds loomed in the distance but posed no current threats. The wind pushed at her, almost determined to get her hair into her eyes and lip gloss. The breeze was slightly chilling, but the sunlight warmed her right up.
“So where are you taking me?”
“Oh, somewhere very special,” Luka assured her with the nod of his head
Pulling her to a stop in front of a red jeep, letting go of her arm and leaned on the hood.
“Mmm yes, the place of inevitable fun. The back seat of a vehicle with tinted windows.” Luka gave her a small pout as he showed her to the passenger seat.
“You know-” He began, opening the door for her “There are many ways people can have a good time in a car with tinted windows.” Marinette looked up, curious to where he was going with it.
Luka raised his eyebrows, waiting expectantly for her to understand. Unfortunately, she did not and pouted. He closed the door when she was properly seated, and waited until he was behind the driver’s seat and buckled up to turn back towards her.
“Marinette, sweet, sweet Marinette.” He shook his head, patting her hand. “I don’t know how to explain this to you without ruining your innocent mind.” Luka paused then tilted his head. “However, you did do it in Jagged Stone’s locker room.”
Marinette felt her face heat up and a quiet ‘oh’ fell from her lips. His body shook as he gently laughed. She crossed her arms and looked out the window.
“Did you really not understand where I was going with that?” Luke questioned as he pulled the jeep out of the parking lot. Marinette shrugged and looked at him through the corner of her eyes.
“If anybody else had said it, I would have understood. But I didn’t expect a dirty joke from you.”
Luka gave a snort then shot her a smile. “I guess I picked a few things up in my years of being in America.” Marinette’s head shot up in interest and she leaned over to him.
“How was it? What’s it like there?”
He spared a second to glance at her. Her eyes sparkled as she desperately waited for him to respond to her flow of questions. The wind whipped her ponytail and caused baby hair to fly into her eyes.
“I guess it depends on where you go. I stayed with some relatives in Columbus Ohio, and it was fine. There was actually this place that was the highlight of my stay. It was, oh what was it?” Luka pursed his lips and narrowed his eyes. “Newport? Newport Music Hall, I think. It was a great place to connect with other musicians and learn more. There was also this park that I would love to take you to someday I-” He cut himself off.
Marinette didn’t see any reason why his cheeks would turn a light shade of pink, especially when he was usually such a calm guy. She dreamed of going to many places someday, and America was one of them.
“I love to go someday. Especially since all of the states are all so different! But Los Angeles sounds especially great!” The bluennette rambled. “It’d be fun to travel all over wouldn’t it?”
Luka's eyes focused on the open road in front of him, smiling fondly. “Traveling is definitely something special. But it’s even more special when you’re doing it with someone you care about.”
“Did you have someone special when you were staying in Ohio?”
“Towards the end, I guess. I dated the gentlemen who worked at the Music Hall for a few months. But we didn’t last long, I was homesick and really missed Paris.” He didn’t risk glancing at her to see what reaction she may have. He expected something along the lines of her gasping or a nervous giggle, but that didn’t come.
“Was it a serious relationship?” That wasn’t the response he was expecting. He turned to her. What could she possibly be thinking about? She really was a baffling woman. Her eyes seemed innocent enough, though he could see that several thoughts were going through her head.
“He was nice and fun, but I didn’t see it going anywhere far. Besides, there was someone here who I’m interested in.” He hoped she understood it was her, she was the one who he couldn’t get out of his mind. The song that rang through his head, but held nothing to what it was actually like to be around her.
Marinette’s shoulder sagged slightly and she looked out the window. He panicked momentarily. She hadn’t understood what he meant. But he bit his bottom lip and took a deep breath to soothe himself. He would show her when they got to their destination.
“If you would go anywhere in the world for your honeymoon, where would you go?” Luka found himself asking, wanting to hear more of her voice and her desires. She pressed a finger to her chin and hummed.
“Anywhere? Hmm... I don’t know. I have ideas, of course. But I guess it would depend on the person.” She said thoughtfully. The person? Did that mean she had places picked out for each general idea of a guy? Or that she would let him choose out of her ideas?
“Oh yeah? What are those ideas?” He tried not to seem desperate about what her answers were. He’s hung out with her plenty of times one on one, with his family, or her friends. But having her in close quarters taking her to a place he held really close to his heart, it put him on edge a bit. Only because he didn’t want this day to be ruined. It didn’t even have to go perfect, as long as it didn’t end in anyone feeling bad. Well, Marinette specifically, he could handle the heartbreak.
“Well, I like the idea of being in Italy. That’s the first runner up. Bora Bora is tied with Fiji. But the destination doesn’t matter. As long as I’m with the person I care most about.”
The rest of the trip was filled with pleasant chatter. The atmosphere stayed lighthearted, much to Luka’s pleasure.
“Only ten more minutes until we’re there.”
