Chapter Seven
"I probably should go" Marinette sighed as she walked through the bedroom door. Her pink suitcase was by her side as her eyes searched for him.
Luka was pushing himself up, making his way to her.
"Where will you go?" He asked her, putting the strap of his guitar over his shoulder.
Marinette shrugged and looked away from him. Until Alya got back, she figured she could use a key to get in. Of course, that would require her going back to the apartment.
The bluenette was sure that she had calmed down enough that she would be able to go back to Adrien and keep her calm. All she had to do was go in, grab a few things, and walk out. The task didn't require any talking at all. It was her place too and she didn't need to explain herself.
"I don't know. Hang out at the bakery until Alya gets back within the next week or so." At least she always left two mannequins at her parents.
Luka scrunched up his eyebrows and rolled his shoulders. Marinette gave a weak smile and hunched her shoulders forward.
"Thank you for letting me stay, it was great being here" She nodded her head then made her way to the front door.
"Wait"
He gripped her wrist, and she froze. Dear god no, she couldn't do this again, she wasn't stable enough for it. Before Marinette had any more time to freak out, his hand left her as soon as it had appeared.
The fashion designer blinked as a bit of her fear faded away. His touch wasn't rough like Adrien's. It was soft, gentle. It felt like he burned her skin, the area was all warm and tingly.
Holding her breath, she turned back to him.
"I'm sorry" He admitted after seeing the look on her face. "I know that was rude but please, stay."
"Luka I-" How could she stay? She already felt like she stayed way longer than needed.
"I understand what you're saying, or maybe I don't and I totally misunderstood. Either way, you don't have to say yes, but all I ask is you hear me out"
Marinette opened her mouth to speak, but nothing came out. How could she say no to hearing what he has to say? She nodded, finally just giving up on words.
He gave a sheepish smile and rolled his shoulders.
"I know we hung out at the bar and last night, but it's been so long, Mari. I still feel like I miss you. Please? If not for me then the sake of catching up with a friend?" He pressed his hands together. "Think of it as a sleepover. Two friends hanging out, like in high school. I can make popcorn and we can watch movies, or we could just play bored games or something. Please?"
He was begging, and she didn't know how to say no. But Marinette knew that he had to be doing other things rather than babysitting her while she had meltdowns.
"Don't you have work today? Or meet up with your mother?" If he said he did, then she wouldn't stay. But her will was quickly crumbling.
Luka cast a glance to the clock and back at her. She knew what the answer was simply based on his eyes.
"I work when inspiration hits" The raven head shook the guitar in his hand. "My mom is staying in town for a while, I thought that I would stop by later. Please stay. I'll see her tomorrow when we go out for lunch"
Marinette had already been irresponsible today, she didn't return the snake miraculous yet. She knew she needed to, but she needed to take some time for her nerves to calm down.
"Don't cancel on your mom for me." She shook her head as she rested her pink suitcase on the ground. "I'll tell you what. I'll stay here and hang out, and when the time comes, you can go see your mom. I have a few things I need to do that I'll just do then"
Luka smiled and brushed his hair out of his face. Marinette smiled too, simply because he looked happy.
"That sounds like a great plan"
He picked up her bag and moved it to sit beside the couch. He held his arm out and she gladly took it as he led her to the bedroom.
The two adults sat on the bed. For the first few moments, it was awkward, neither had the slightest clue what to do. But Luka smiled and grabbed his guitar.
"You know" He started while gently strumming the strings. "Going to travel around Europe isn't as fun as it sounds."
Marinette cocked her head to the side. How could anyone not enjoy traveling in Europe? Though she did live in the fashion capital of the world, she always wanted to see the culter in outfits.
"Why not?"
"Well, I suppose it could be fun. But I was just traveling on my own. It sounds silly now that I say it out loud" He gave a nervous chuckle and it was followed by a sigh.
"It was just lonely. There was no one to keep me from overworking myself. Or take me to do things I wouldn't even think of."
Marinette felt her heartache for him. She understood. Not in every way he did, but enough to be empathetic. The sad look in his eyes made her heart sink.
"If I traveled, I would do everything. Even if I were by myself. It'd stop to get a dessert that's popular in that country or city, take tours, and I don't know, just be thrilled." Marinette's hands were clasped together as she stared at nothing in particular.
The bluenette missed the look Luka gave her as she spoke so passionately.
"Tell me something" Luka mused. Bluebell eyes turned to meet his blue.
"Yeah?" She asked, shifting so her body was facing his.
"Who's your favorite superhero?"
To say the question took her by surprise was an understatement. It was definitely not one of the things she expected him to ask.
"Do you mean any superhero that existed or Paris's?" She questioned.
The rough fabric of the pillowcase scratched her face as she layed back into them.
"Any superhero"
The only sound between the two was the notes Luka played as Marinette thought of an answer. His scent invaded her scenes as she stared at the ceiling. The light was slowly fading, it got dark quicker then she liked.
Who was her favorite? Rena Rouge was her best friend. Jade Turtle was too. But she would never admit to their faces that they weren't number one.
"Super Woman. Without a doubt. She's one of the first female superheroes that I learned about. She's smart, brave, she's caring, and is so good at her job. She's my childhood inspiration." Marinette stated, closing her eyes.
Today's exhaustion was catching up with her. It was only six o'clock, but she already felt like she has lacked sleep for three days straight.
"You're a lot like her. But the only thing that you have that she doesn't is the most adorable freckles in the world" Luka told her, setting his guitar down and laying down next to her.
He rested his head on his hand and watched her as she rolled her body towards him. She had her lips pressed together as she gripped the blanket in her hand.
"That's where you're wrong Luka. I'm nothing like her. She's so much more superior. She's everything I'm not"
Luka watched as her bottom lip jutt out slightly and began to tremble.
"Marinette" He began. "You're so much more than her. Real or not."
The bluenette felt stupid getting upset about this. It was just a question that had nothing related to what had been going on lately. She should be blushing or cooing or something. Not on the verge of tears like he said something offending.
"Listen to me, Mari. You're so smart. You helped solve so many people's problems in highschool. Like when Kim broke his leg, you helped carry him carry his things home every day for a week when no one else could. When Ivan and his girlfriend were having relationship problems, you were the one that suggested they cool off before they got back together. Don't even get me started about the rest of the class. Or even people you didn't know" Luka rested a hand on her shoulder to comfort her.
Yes, the blunette had done those things, but they didn't mean anything. They were the obvious things to do. There were so many things she hadn't done and watched happen. Even as a hero she still felt doubts.
"And Marinette, god you're beautiful" He brushed the hair from her face as he stared at her.
Marinette could feel another headache coming on. She needed to stop getting so stressed out. Her blood pressure was going up and she didn't want to be akumatized.
With her eyes closed, she could feel herself begin to drift off. At some point, she was laying her head on Luka's chest after she shivered.
"Luka" She mumbled, burying her face into his chest.
"Yes?"
"You're so warm. I love it"
He chuckled, his chest vibrating. The raven head used one hand to stroke her hair and the other was behind his head.
"Now go to sleep Marinette. You've been pushing yourself for far too long" He said, pressing his nose into her hair.
She grunted in response, yawning. He laughed silently, hugging her closer to him.
"You"
Marinette blinked, looking up to find the voice that echoed around her.
She spotted Adrien with his back to her looking through a window.
"You're the reason that everything is falling apart"
Marinette bit her lip as she slowly walked towards him.
"Look at what you've done." He waved at the window, and she watched as screams entered the room on the other side.
Panic and anxiety pierced her heart as her guts twisted with disgust.
"No" She whispered, stepping back. "That wasn't my fault. I couldn't help it" She shook her head violently, trying to get rid of the image of the scene she saw.
"You killed an innocent child" He continued like nothing happened. "You're the reason I never want to have kids. You killed a living being"
"No," She said, sounding weaker than last time. "I didn't do anything wrong. I did everything I was told."
"And look where you are now. No longer in a relationship rather than raising a family."
"Marinette, you killed a person" She whipped around to see Alya. Her eyes were glowing orange as she circled around the bluenette.
"An innocent child" Nino chimed in, doing the same as his wife.
"No"
The three closed in on her, and she felt herself begin to hyperventilate.
"No!"
"You're hardly even worthy to be considered Ladybug. Ladybug would never hurt the innocent" The three said in sync, twisted smirks curling onto their lips.
"Marinette" They chanted, watching as she clutched her head and crouched onto the floor.
"Marinette" They continued laughing as she began to cry.
"Marinette!"
Bluebell eyes snapped open as she shot up. Her gut twisted and she felt puke begin to come up. She didn't have time to talk to Luka, she jolted out of bed and straight to the bathroom.
She narrowly missed the toilet before she began to throw up. Her body shook.
Luka followed closely behind her, rubbing her back as she let it out.
"My baby!" Marinette cried as she gasped for breath. "I killed my baby!"
She hunched over the toilet and continued to be sick. Luka left her for a few moments, coming back with a glass of water and paper towels.
"Shh Marinette. It's alright. It'll be okay. Let it out, everything will be fine" The raven head soothed, sitting on the ring of the bathtub.
"I'm the reason Adrien doesn't want to be with me!" She sobbed harder.
The bluenette flushed the toilet and turned to Luka. She left her head fall and hit his stomach.
"Marinette, it's okay. Calm down, sweetheart. Drink this, okay? It'll make you feel better"
She took the water from him, gulping it down her best without choking.
"Do you want to talk about it?" He asked rubbing his thumb over her cheek.
Tears strolled down her cheek as she sucked in a breath.
"I was pregnant. And Adrien was the father."
