Chapter Eight

Luka picked her up. Her legs wrapped around his stomach, and her arms clutched as his back while she buried her face into his neck.

He brought them over to the couch and maneuvered himself so that he was sitting down and she was sitting on his lap.

He tucked her head under his chin and refused to let her move until her breathing turned back to normal.

"No one was going to love it more than me" Marinette sniffled, curling up into his chest, using the palm of her hand to wipe the tears away.

"We were so excited. It wasn't planned, but when are the best things really ever planned?" She stared at her lap and watched her fist clench.

"You don't need to tell me," Luka told her, momentarily tightening his grip around her. "Don't force yourself for me. You'll tell me when you're ready."

Marinette knew the truth was that most of it wasn't even about him. Him comforting her was so sweet, but this was more about the breakup. The look Adrien had in his eyes when they came back from the hospital that day, it shattered her heart into a million pieces.

Marinette sniffled before she opened her mouth. She closed it and rested her head on his shoulder. The fashion designer hoped that he couldn't feel the shivers that wracked her body, knowing fully well that he could.

"Marinette I-" Keys rattled at the front door and swung open, cutting Luka off before he could continue to speak.

"Uncle Luka!" A little voice cheered.

The two jumped as they looked over the coach to see Jueklea and Rose with their adopted son, Weylyn.

Weylyn ran around the couch and jumped on Luka without hesitation, laughing in the process. Luka made an mppff sound as he hit his chest.

"Wey!" Luka exclaimed, using one arm to hug Weylyn back.

Marinette maneuvered herself so that she was just at that angle that wouldn't allow Rose and Juekla to see her face.

She watched as Weylyn sat on his lap and began to talk non stop. Luka smiled and nodded his head, laughing when the little boy smiled proudly.

Wide green eyes turned to Marinette, tilting to the side. She felt her face begin to heat up as attention turned to her.

"I was going to show you, but the soap is under the sink to the right." Luka said , quick to speak before Weylyn could. "I can't believe I already ran out."

He gave her a smile, but he raised his eyebrows and looked behind her.

Marinette turned, realizing through her confusion that he meant the bathroom. She could not have wanted to thank him more.

"Oh, it's fine. I'm sure I'll find it myself" The bluenette said slowly, careful to make sure her voice didn't crack.

She pushed herself up and walked towards the small room before Rose could ask what was going on. The door shut behind her and Marinette looked at the mirror.

She needed to clean her act up. She couldn't keep dropping all of her tantrums on Luka like she had been in the last twenty-four hours.

A gentle rapping came from the other side of the door before it opened. Luka stepped in, making it so he kept the others from looking in. His back pressed against it as she turned her head away from him.

"I'm sorry" Marinette mumbled, dragging a hand over the exposed skin on her arm. She could feel the warmth he provided for her not moments before fade from her quickly.

"For what? Being upset?" Luka shook his head and stood in front of her.

Marinette had to look up to see his face, he was good several inches taller. And she secretly loved it. He was standing close to her, so close in fact that she could feel his cool breath brush across her face.

Luka cupped her cheek with a hand and tilted his head down, his lips just millimeters from hers. Marinette noted the fact that if she moved her head forward even a little bit, then her lips would be on his. She felt her face heat up as the thought entered her mind.

"Never ever, ever say sorry for how you feel" His eyes met hers and she didn't have the willpower to look away. "And you should never feel like you have to feel guilty. Because Marinette how will you ever feel close to me if you feel bad every time you see me?"

Oh god did she feel close now. Marinette almost couldn't fight the little voice in her head. All she had to do was lean forward, even the slightest bit just to feel his lips.

"Are you two okay in there?" Rose asked from the other side of the door.

"Marinette" She was forced to lift her eyes from his chapped lips and meet endless blue eyes. "Will you be alright?"

The bluenette searched herself for a true answer. Was she alright? No. But would she be? Not anytime soon but maybe, hopefully, she was on the road to recovery. And one day she would be. Convinced if he stayed with her eventually she would be.

"Luka?"

"Yes?"

"I think I will be. Thank you for everything"

"Master Fu" Marinette bowed her head as she entered the room.

"Ah, Marinette. Come in, come in" Master Fu tucked something away into a cabinet before he turned to face her.

The bluenette dug into her purse for a few seconds before she pulled out the black box containing the snake miraculous. She held it out in the palm of her hand, stepping towards him.

"Ah, yes, the snake" Master Fu took it from her and pinched the lid between his fingers.

Green lit up the room as Sass stretched his back. After the yawn that escaped the kwami's lips, he was full of energy, flying around the two. Tikki left Marinette's shoulder and laughed as she joined Sass.

"How was he?" Master Fu smiled as he watched the kwami have fun.

The sounds of Tikki and Sass caused Wayzz to stir and wake up. When he realized it was his two friends, he rejoiced. The three kwami's began to play, Sass's happiness being enough to fuel the others too.

"He was wonderful!" Sass cheered, doing a flip. "He genuinely cared about the safety of his friend, and he did nothing out of spite or selfishness!"

"Very good. If you needed to would you work with him again?" Master Fu pondered as he turned to continue putting things away from his earlier appointment.

"If I had to? I would do it just because!" Sass exclaimed.

Marinette felt a slight smile tugging at her lips. Adrien had done something nice for her friend. He chose him because Luka was all of those things Sass said earlier. Despite the fact that at the moment the blonde hated his guts, he still did what's right.

Marinette's lungs filled with joy and pride. Luka had passed the test, and if he was ever needed, he could work with them. All because Adrien was being nice.

That's what she loved about Adrien. Arguing or no, he never let his problems for his civilian life leak into his duties as a hero.

Of course, it caused tension to rise up while fighting akumas and his insecurities to spill out to her when they were alone. But he used to always open up to her and trust her with every part of his soul. Now she wasn't so sure if the trust between the two was that strong, but of course, it still lay between them.

"Marinette, tell Adrien thank you for me," Master Fu said, pulling her out of her thoughts. "He made a very wise choice today, proving only for the hundredth time that he was dependable as always."

"Don't forget me!" Sass interjected, a stupid big grin on his face. "Tell Adrien that I really appreciated who he picked out for me!"

"I'll pass the news along," Marinette said, waving for Tikki to get back in her bag. "I hope to see you soon, Sass. You too, Wayzz. I'm sure Tikki and I will see you around." She winked and giggled.

"See you, Master Fu" Marinette waved at him before walking out.

She vaguely heard him respond "Until next time Marinette Dupain Cheng."

The sunlight warmed up Marinette's face as she walked the streets of Paris. When she went through shadows, chills wracked her spin as the warmth left her body. Today was one of the better days.

The streets were hushed with that winter silence, and sunlight streamed through passing trees. People were still bundled up warmly at home or work, staying away from the snow that promised to melt through their shoes and make their socks wet and squishy.

Kids dotted the park, their laughter ringing clearly through the air while they made snow angels, snowmen, having snowball fights and dragged each other around on snowboards.

"Marinette!"

Looking at the park entrance, Marinette saw a flustered Alya rush towards her. Wasn't she supposed to be at her Mom's? The bluenette pondered that question as Alya approached her.

"Girl, where have you been?" Alya demanded, hunching over with her hands on her knees so she could catch her breath.

Marinette tilted her head to the side, watching her friend slowly get energy back. She couldn't get over the fact that Alya wasn't supposed to be here.

"I've been at Luka's. What the heck are you doing here?"

Alya stood up and adjusted her scarf, raising an eyebrow.

"I'm here so that Ariana can play in the snow. Nino is watching Chico at home" Alya huffed, seeming slightly angered at her husband. "That's beyond the point. The point is, you weren't answering any of your messages! I had to hear from Nino that heard from Adrien what happened last night!" Alya's brown eyes burned questions.

Had it only been since last night? So much had happened in the last twenty-four hours that Marinette didn't realize how it had only been a small span of time it had been. Her thoughts were cut off as Alya snapped her fingers in Marinette's face.

"Focus, girl. What were you doing with Luka?" Marinette blinked, slightly confused.

"Oh you know, getting down and dirty" Marinette responded smoothly, watching the look of pure shock on Alya's face.

"I swear to God if you're telling the truth I'll-" Alya began to threaten.

"Chill, I'm messing with you" Marinette rolled her eyes. "He let me stay at his place for the night. I was either going to stay with him until you were back or stay with my parents. And as you can obviously see, that plan has changed."

Getting down and dirty wasn't even in her sincere vocabulary. Alya should have known that better than anyone. But Marinette did suppose that playing with a two-year-old in the snow did cause more anger while standing there doing nothing than anything else.

"Marinette" Alya warned, putting both of her hands on the fashion designers shoulders. "What do you think you're doing?"

"Well, I thought I was going to go home and pick up a few things. I mean Luka and I were going to have a Fast and Furious marathon" Marinette smiled.

Earlier when she had mentioned that they should have a movie marathon, Luka's face lit up with childish joy. And she couldn't for the life of her tell him no.

"You just broke up with Adrien, and you're already running to another guy"

Marinette felt anger through her that she knew she would most likely regret later. It wasn't like she ran off to sleep with some stranger. She went to a trusted friend.

"Alya, you make it sound a hundred times worse than it is. Besides, who was the one that had to go out of town when she knew her best friend was in a fragile state with her boyfriend?" Marinette sneered, tightening her coat around herself.

Alya scowled, looking at her face. Marinette could see the want to respond back pulse through Alya's body, the anger rolled off her in waves.

The brunette shook her head and sighed, catching Marinette by surprise. Every time she had disagreed within the last day it only ended until one broke down and had enough.

Alya just let it go and gave a small smile.

"Come on Marinette. You can stay at my place now. Let me go get Ariana, I left Kim to watch her for some stupid reason." Alya was so calm. "You can go get your things from Luka's and we can talk about it tonight. We can talk about everything"

The offer was tempting. And gosh, Marinette almost pounced on it. A girl's night? They hadn't had one in months. Six to be exact, the last one was a week before Chico was born. Not that she was counting.

"Okay, Alya, I'll see you in an hour" Marinette agreed, waving as Alya turned to go get her daughter.

Luka didn't live too far from the park, it was only a ten-minute walk. She went upstairs after he buzzed her in and stopped when she was at his door.

All the bluenette had to do was tell him Alya was back and she was staying with her. It was easier said than done. But regardless, she had to do it.

"Hey, Luka I-" Marinette cut herself off as she looked at what he had done.

Pillows and blankets were scattered across the floor- which was an awful lot for only one guy- and snacks and drinks were on the coffee table.

"Marinette!" Luka exclaimed as he sat the bowl of freshly made popcorn onto the table.

"What is all of this?" She asked as she still took things in. Luka gave a soft chuckle and tilted his head.

"I may have gone a little overboard. But I didn't want either of us to get cold, or thirsty, and God forbid hungry" He waved a hand towards everything. "Worse comes to worse, we build a pillow fort and we could live there until the supplies run out."

His plan would actually work at this point. They had enough things to last them a week. And boy was it cute.

"You can sleep on the couch or the floor, or if you get uncomfortable, my bed is always open. I plan on watching all of the movies in the set. Unless you changed your mind or you suddenly don't like Fast and Furious. In that case, I also own Jurassic Park, quite a few Disney movies, Jaws, some other shark movies...... I have a lot." Luka babbled, walking over to his movie shelf.

Marinette shook her head. "Luka, it's fine. I'll join you in a minute. I just need to make a phone call."

Luka smiled and nodded, going over to the t.v. to put the first movie in.

"Hey girl, what's up?" Alya answered from the other end of the phone.

"There's been a change of plans" Marinette admitted, leaning her shoulder against the wall.

"How so?"

Luka cheered from the living room, sounding like a kid who got what he wanted for Christmas. Marinette bit her lip to hold back a smile.

"I'm staying at Luka's for the night"
