Q&A - Part I (2015)
I asked you all a while ago to ask me questions for a Q&A I was doing and these are the ones I answered. Thank you all so much for submitting your questions I had so much fun answering them.
1. Do you somehow relate to your female protagonists or were you inspired by someone?
In a way I think I do relate to my female protagonists. I would say I'm a mixture of both Rose and Georgiana from Royal Blood. I have moments where I'm like Rose, I can be very hesitant about something or someone and I'll keep my emotions hidden. However at a push of a button I'm exactly like Georgiana or Piper (from Intoxicate). I'll be up for an adventure and let curiosity get the better of me. Clarissa is definitely me as a Queen! Most of what I would say wouldn't make sense, I'd let my emotions control me and I'd have a bit too much fun messing with people's lives.
2. What kind of guys do you like? I mean, the cute one, the shy one, the mysterious one, the athletic one?
I'm going to answer this one in terms of who I like to read about. I love a mysterious guy in a book. If the character is from a damaged background or is somehow tormented by a past experience I love following their progression of recovering from whatever made them that way.
3. Advice for new writers?
Write even if no one is reading. Every writer starts off the same way with a single idea. It doesn't matter if that idea is small, it will slowly evolve and your story will unravel itself. I know on Wattpad the amount of reads, votes and comments influence people's decisions on what to read but you can't let that discourage you too much. Just get your idea down in writing and see where it takes you. Hard work and determination is the key.
4. How do you promote your book?
I honestly don't think I've ever promoted my book. I know there used to be groups where you could do that sort of thing but I think Wattpad got rid of them. My alternative method to replace promoting is replying to comments, I love taking time to do this because it allows me to interact with my readers and build a relationship with them. When I see comments from readers that I recognise from when I first started the story I say to myself, "Well I must be doing something right if they've stuck around."
5. Any future stories in mind? If so will they be this year?
Without giving too much away I currently have three more books that I am working on as well as Intoxicate and Out Of Bounds. So in total I have five stories to work on after I finish Royal Blood. My main priority is Out Of Bounds and getting Intoxicate underway. The other three you will have to wait for I'm afraid, but I'm always posting sneak peaks on twitter and Instagram! There will be regular updates for OOB and Intoxicate once RB is completed.
6. What made you come up with Royal Blood? I had just finished a 'Bad Boy' reading spree and I decided to switch genres to Historical Fiction. History has always fascinated me so after I had finished one book I thought about trying my hand at it. I didn't think the story would be any good but when the ideas started to flow I enjoyed it more and more.
7. How do you make those love sparks appear between Rose and Alex?
It's sort of love at first sight. Alex and Rose crave stability; Rose has just witnessed the death of her Aunt and Uncle and has been tossed into the lives of royalty. Whereas Alex has been looking for someone like Rose all his life, he wants someone to share his life with. Whether this makes Alex a bad King or not, he favours his sister's lives over his duty as a royal. The protection of his sisters, mother and now Rose are what he prioritises the most. Alex's caring and protective side is what draws Rose towards him; she craves love and protection as well.
8. How did you come up with such a horrible villain?
Edward is everyone's worst nightmare; he is ruthless, manipulative and just doesn't give a sh*t. I wanted to create a villain that as soon as he enters a scene the reader feels afraid for the characters and I think Edward does just that. I actually find the scenes with Edward in really easy to write but I sometimes do end up scaring myself and thinking, "Why am I making this character go through this?!" Spoiler Alert! Edward will be making an appearance in Out of Bounds.
9. Why do you like writing in third person?
Royal Blood was always going to be in third person, it never really crossed my mind to write it in first. I thought ahead and thought, "What happens when she gets to the castle? All I'll be able to write is that she's scared and confused!" I knew that the other central characters were who would drive the narrative. You need Georgiana to act as a guide and mentor to Rose because her life had been turned upside down. She's also there for the reader, the reader and Rose are in the same position they've both been thrown into this new world and they have to rely on other people to show them the way.
10. Why did you decide to portray Alex the way you did?
To be 100% honest I had just gone through a stage of reading only 'Bad Boy' books, so when I first imagined Alex he was a 'Bad Boy' but as I thought about his character more and more I didn't want him to be that same generically flawed character. I wanted to make him flawed but under my own terms. He was forced to grown up too early by his manipulative father (you'll catch a glimpse of this in OOB) and he is under pressure by everyone around him to be the future King. There has been a lot of stories recently where the male protagonist is possessive and I wanted to take that idea and make my character more realistic than a possessive and dominant alpha male. William, Alex's father had a lot of issues and one of them was anger. Alex inherited his father's temper whether he wanted it or not, he's conflicted with his emotions and struggles to control his anger. Alex has so much inner turmoil which causes him to lash out at the people he loves, towards the end you can see how hard he is trying to control it so he doesn't push Rose further away.
