Chapter I

Everything I know... I forget. The only thing there now is the one who raised me, the one who took me in... My... My father. King Washington.

He lies on his bed in his grand chambers, but it all seems to lifeless and dull now. His skin pale and clammy, his brow scrunched in scrutiny of his pain.

"What is going on? What is happening to him?" I ask the royal doctor at Washington's side. I feel Aaron's hand slip into mine. A small gesture, a comforting one none the less. He hangs close to my side, our shoulders touching. I shift my weight onto the side of my body closest to his to lean in closer, but try to keep it unnoticeable. I feel him do the same.

"Well, sir, he has a fever. Anything other than that, it is too soon to tell. I gave him an herbal pack upon his head and will send the servants to have an herbal tea mixed to help bring down his temperature." The doctor informs me, as he packs and laces shut his bag.

I nod in response, scanning the man in the bed as if I could spot anything the doctor could not.

"Sir?" Aaron pipes in quietly. The doctor looks over to him, almost shocked. Aaron truly is a quit person, almost never speaking to anyone else unless he must. It is almost like he can disappear into the background, he stands still as a deer and even quitter than one too. He would make a fabulous hunter, my mind jumps to, but I dismiss the thought, I do not think he would be capable to take another beings life. At least not yet.

"Yes?" The doctor replies, holding his things.

"Do you know the cause of such a sudden illness? Could it be... Poison?" Aaron inquires, the last word rolling off his tongue in careful disgust. It jolts my body, he could be right. Who could have? Soldiers? Spies? Servants? Cooks? Other kingdoms he has met with recently?

I let go of Aaron's hand. He turns to look at me directly. I do not meet his face. "Doctor, could you prepare this tea concoction yourself until we know the cause? I do not wish to take any chances, if this is indeed the cause of my father's sudden ailment."

The royal doctor holds an expression of mixed shock and wonder. "Yes, well no... Yes... I, well, like I said, it is still too early to jump to conclusions about what this illness really is and how it was caused. I shall test him for poison and keep you informed. Do tell me, has he been showing signs of fatigue, lack of eating, or drinking? Has he been more worried or stressed than usual? Maybe seeming a bit distant?"

"He had seemed to be more tired and wore down than usual, but I figured it was from the planning of the city tours... I had not noticed any tell-tale signs of sickness." I rack my brain, trying my best to dig up any memories or concerns I might have had... Why didn't I pay more attention?

"Didn't he mention headaches at one point?" Aaron pipes up, I feel him looking at me, lingering, but he turns back to the doctor. "I suggested drinking more water, for I was certain that it was just the heat getting to him and his long hours of work..." Aaron drags off.

I watch as the doctor scribbles these noticing, as little and unhelpful as they are, onto a small notepad. He thanks us, and gives my shoulder a squeeze. I look into his eyes, and with one look we read each other.

Be careful with whom you trust.
