Four Years Ago

"I am sorry, James but I can't do this anymore our jobs are leading us to different places and a long distance relationship won't work, you never know if one of us gets killed or even worse, if I get caught and they come after you, I won't be able to live with myself if you get hurt, James." Lucy spoke to her boyfriend of three years. "But Luce, we can work it out. I know being in the army was what you wanted to be but I can't deal with not being able to hear from you or not seeing you when you come back." James grabbed her hands tightly, tears swelling in his eyes, "You mean so much to me, Lucy, please when you do come back, come and see me just so I know you are alive and well." He cried making Lucy swallow hard, "James, don't make this harder for us, when I come home, I promise you that I will come and see you." Lucy looked at him, her blue eyes sparkled in the light but still filled with tears as she squeezed James's hands , "James, I love you more then anyone else in this world so believe me when I say this is breaking my heart." She sobbed before she let go of his hands and leaned down to grab her large rucksack, "I will always love you, James. Don't forget me." She looked back at him. James ran over to her and hugged her, "I will always love you, Lucy. I will never forget you." He let her go and watched her walk out the door for the last time.

Three years after.

James was sitting alone in a bar thinking about Lucy and how he hadn't heard from her for the last two years, worried if she had been missing or killed in action he drank his whiskey and thought of her. When he finished up at the bar, he walked home slightly drunk but still alert to what was around him, he walked up to the path of his house and opened his door with a little difficultly but managed to stumble in and lay on the sofa until he heard a knock on the door he eagerly got up thinking it was Lucy, he stumbled to the door hearing the knocking, "Hang on!" He called before sorting out his, blondish colour hair and opened the door seeing Lucy's commanding officer standing there, he gulped quietly, "Captain James Conrad?" The officer spoke. James felt his heart jumping out of his chest and his breath elevated, "That's me." He replied, standing straight showing his muscular chest, "I have this to give you, Lucy requested that you should take this." The officer gave him a medium sized parcel, James widened his eyes and took the parcel clutching it to his body, "Is she still alive?" He asked quietly wondering if his dearly beloved was still alive, "I am so sorry, Captain Conrad but she died yesterday, she was patrolling and was shot in the chest, death was instant." The officer tried not show his emotion, "She was the best in our unit and will be missed sorely." He looked at James who felt his blood boiling to the extreme, "No, she can't be. She promised me she would come back!" He yelled at the man in his door way, "I am truly sorry but if it helps you are welcome to come to the burial service, its two weeks from today." The man spoke. "Thank you, I will be there." James stated before closing the door and walking to the living room with the parcel in his hand before placing it on the table and laying on the sofa, falling asleep.

The next morning James woke, looking at the parcel he decided to open it, finding a photo of Lucy in her uniform, her notebooks and a letter in which was addressed to him as he put all the other things to one side, he opened the letter and read it.

Dear James,

I know we parted on so called bad terms but I am hoping this letter will help you and tell you how I really feel about you.
While I have been here all I can think about is you, you are always on my mind, I even wear the necklace you brought me for my birthday in hopes that I will return to you. My heart longs for you my angel, I know you have probably found another but know this, you will forever live with in my heart and I say because I want you to be happy in your life and not to worry about me.

All my love, my darling.
Lucy xx

James bit his lip as not to cry when he read the letter, knowing his love for Lucy was strong and unforgettable, he knew she would always have his heart, looking at the photo, he looked at how her beautiful, long brunette hair covered her spots that were on her face which James always thought was cute, he looked at the way Lucy's eyes sparkled in the light. "I will always love you, Lucy. Always." He let a few rouge tears fall down his cheeks.

Two weeks had passed and James hadn't felt any better about losing Lucy but he knew today was the day of her funeral so he pulled himself up from his large bed and went to shower as he did he rested his head on the shower wall, feeling the warm water hitting his tanned skin he let out a deep sigh.

During the funeral, James stood at the front looking down at the wooden coffin covered in the english flag and a few of Lucy's platoon lowering her in to the ground, Lucy's officer came over to him, "I know how you feel, Lucy was always the life and soul of everything that happened, she was a beautiful, young lady, she had no flaws to what she did even though she was stubborn." He chuckled slightly before James frowned, "She was stubborn for a reason." He quietly spoke, "May I be alone with her for a while?" He asked curiously, "Of course you can." The officer patted his shoulder and left James alone with the coffin.

James sat beside the hole, not caring about getting his suit dirty, keeping the photo in his suit pocket, he pulled it out and smiled weakly, "My brave solider." He whispered softly.
