Chapter Four
David's dark hair casts a shadow across his face and I can't see his expression. My dad watches me from his chair but I ignore him, not wanting to see the look on his face.
"I just came to get my shirt," David says, glancing at me.
"Oh. I'll go get it," I say quickly, my face heating up. Now Dad knows whose shirt I came home in today.
When I get to my room I realize I'm wearing the shirt. I pull it over my head quickly. It smells like girly body lotion now. Why didn't I put on a different shirt after putting lotion on?
I change into the first thing I can find, a dark green t-shirt with butterflies on the front. I've never had a boy over before. I can't believe David actually came to my house. No one ever comes to my house.
When I go back, my mom has already taken David in the kitchen and given him milk and cookies. I hand over his lavender-smelling shirt.
"Thanks," he says, taking it. He finally looks me in the eyes and I smile. Suddenly he jumps back, banging into the counter behind him. He looks down at the ground. "What the?"
"Charlie!" I cry out, shoving David away from Charlie's hamster ball. I can't believe I forgot about Charlie! He could have rolled down the stairs or out the front door! "Oh no!"
I try to grab the hamster ball but it rolls around between our feet. David tries to get out of the way, but almost slips on the ball as it rolls beneath his foot. I push him again, and he falls over. My mom catches him and soon all three of us are yelling and jumping around in the kitchen.
"Stop, stop!" I throw myself onto the floor and wrap my arms around Charlie's ball. "You're all scaring him!"
"Who?" David says looking confused.
"Her hamster," my mom explains. "Come and sit down David." She pulls out a chair. "Kati, why don't you take Charlie back to his cage?" she says in Hungarian.
I get up and stomp out of the kitchen. Charlie almost got trampled to death and is terrified. I blink back tears as I carry Charlie to my room. "It's okay Charlie," I say, getting him out of his ball. His little body shakes and I quickly put him back in his cage. He runs to his little house to .
This is why I never have people over, not just because my dad hates everyone. I take a moment to calm down before going back to the kitchen. When David sees me he immediately gets up from his chair.
"I should probably go," he says.
"No, stay," my mom insists. "You haven't finished your cookie yet."
"I have to get back home. Solar Trek is going to start soon and..." David stops suddenly. "I mean, it's getting late."
My mom snaps her fingers. "Solar Trek is on tonight! You're right!" I groan inwardly. She's a big Solar Trek fan. "Do you want to watch it with us?" My mom grabs the bag of cookies and two glasses of milk and goes into the living room before David can even reply. Great, now he knows my mom is a Solar Trek fan. How embarrassing.
"Sorry," David says once we are alone.
"For what?" I cross my arms.
"For almost stepping on your mouse."
"Charlie's not a mouse!" I say, a little too loudly. "He's a dwarf hamster."
"Sorry," David says again, shuffling his feet and looking towards the front door.
"It's fine," I say, sighing. I guess he did help me out today. We've been going to school together all our lives, but he's always with his friends and I'm always with Mindy. I'm actually a bit jealous of the friendship he has with his two best friends. They're always laughing and having fun together. I've never been part of a close group of friends like that.
David looks down at the floor, his hair falling into his eyes.
"Are you going to stay and watch Solar Trek with us?" I ask, smiling to let him know I'm not mad anymore.
"Do you want me to?" David's blue eyes search mine.
"Sure." I look away and shrug.
"Come on you two!" Mom calls from the living room. "The show is starting!"
