Chapter 5 An Agent's Life is a Tough One

The next day, Henry wakes up and thinks, what is that noise?  He looks up in horror. There is a scary creature that stands outside his sister's part of the cage and licks its chops. It attempts to break inside the cage to eat his sister. There is no way he will let this happen.

Henry puts on his binoculars and sees it scratch at the outside of the cage. He pulls out some scissors. He thinks it is now or never. He leaves the cage, holds the scissors in his paws, and jumps on the beast back. He opens the scissors and attacks the creature that dares to harm his sibling.  The creature yelps in pain.

He looks at in annoyance at his falls down. He checks on Annette and she remains asleep as if nothing were wrong.

He wonders how did she sleep through all this?   He touches the shoulder of the animal that is hurt and it does not move.

Henry is afraid as the creature turns blue.  He has no idea what this means.  Is it dead?  Did he kill it?

Four hours later, Annette sees Henry is on the floor. She can not understand this. She opens her mouth to speak.

"Henry, what happened here? What have you done?" She asks.

Henry stands there in silence. "Did it try to harm us?" Annette asks.

"I had no choice. It tried to kill you,"  Henry tells her.

"I could let that happen.  Not when we have not seen in each other in years and you just got here,"  Henry explains.

"Oh, I see, it was self-defense, " Annette replies.

"Do not worry you did the right thing," She responds.

"I am sure if the boss has any questions about it he will be sure to ask you. Do not stress over it. Brother, you are okay,"  Annette tells him.

Despite his sister's reassurance, it was okay, he was still upset. He had taken the life of another living being. What was to become of him?  Would the agency keep this in the clear?

He could not stop replaying the horrid experience in his mind. He felt like a murderer.  It was his fault the animal lay died on the kitchen floor.  What would the owners think?

He knew because of him he and his sister were still alive. He breathes a sigh of relief. He was glad nothing more happens from the whole incident.

Twenty minutes later, and there was no evidence of a struggle.  He could figure out what this meant.  Had he dreamed the whole thing?

Henry and Annette left the house for work. Annette to do the paperwork and Henry to do the fieldwork.   Agent H and I worked well together.

Agent L just glares at Agent A.  What was her problem?   Agent L was jealous of  Agent A. She saw her as a competition for the boss's affections.

Agent A  laughs and thought if someone told her a year ago she would be a spy she would not have believed them.

Agents H and I look for the missing hamster again and find him inside an old abandoned mill.

The animal was tied up inside a corner in the chair. As they untie him he calls out, "Watch out, it is a trap! "  He was too late. The light fixture was loose and fell from the ceiling. It barely misses the agents and lands on Agent I's tail.

Agent I, yells in pain and agony as his tail begins to bleed. Agent H leaves to go find help and takes the other hamster an ordinary house pet with him.

He calls for help and tells Agent J, Agent I is hurt badly.  Agent J promises to send help right away.

Later, the help arrives, lifts the fallen object off Agent I's tail, but then his tail falls off.

"Ouch, that hurts!"  He screams in pain.

Agent I is taken to a special animal care place for hurt agents like himself.  He is bandaged up and told no more work for a week.

Agent H feels sorry for his hurt friend, Agent I, and for the hamster who was hamster -napped.  He thinks to himself such is an agent's life it is a tough one.  He goes back to headquarters unsure how to proceed next.
