Chapter Eleven

On the drive home, Jack and Terra talked about school, how she liked the town, and about family.

"They're good people, they're just hard to like until you get to know them," Terra insisted.

"I'm sure they are, sweety," Jack smiled, but his voice didn't sound very convinced.

When they pulled into the driveway, Greg left Terra talking to his mother in the living room to get changed up in his own.

As he took off his t-shirt and looked in the mirror, he noticed the bruises around his ribs.

"Hopefully we won't be in a position where she will notice that," he sighed, putting on a black shirt and some cologne before looking closely at his face.

"It's not even going to leave a bruise. Sloppy work, he muttered before walking downstairs.

"You kids have fun!" Brenda cooed proudly as Greg and Terra left, silently getting into the car and driving away.

"Your mom is super nice," Terra smiled happily.

"Yeah, she calls herself my dad's nicer side," Greg replied with a nonchalant shrug and a forced smile.

"So what movie is playing?"

"A comedy from the 70s or something. It's an old theatre, so it plays old movies," Greg answered without taking his eyes from the road.

Terra laughed for the first time since Greg had met her, and he was going to comment, but she spoke first.

"You...um...look handsome today," she muttered softly, staring down at her lap.

"Thanks..." Greg said just as softly, trying his best to react appropriately. He felt nothing, but tried his best to fake it. "You...look beautiful."

Greg didn't really notice what she looked like until now, sneaking a peek to see her wearing a pair of black jeans and a baggy anime shirt.

"Thank you," she squeaked back awkwardly, her pale face going completely red.

When they arrived, the movie was about to start and Greg started going over his reactions in his head.

'I have to seem normal,' he thought, trying not to appear too lost.

When there was laughter from the audience, he laughed. When there was a sad scene, he made sure to look upset, and when there was a sexual scene...

Well, he didn't really know what to do, but when he looked over at Terra, their eyes met.

When the movie ended, Greg started driving Terra home.

"I liked the part where the guy goes into his room and sees the rhino wearing th--" Greg started to say, but Terra interrupted.

"You don't have to pretend."

"Pretend to what...?" Greg asked cautiously, glancing sideways at her in suspicion, but also flashing a large grin.

"That," she pointed directly at his face. "You don't have to pretend you feel things you don't."

Greg was actually caught off guard and before he could reply, they pulled up to her house and she left without another word.

When he finally arrived home, his parents immediately swarmed him, wanting to know every detail.

"I don't think it went well..." he shrugged and scratched his head for dramatics.

"Damn, I thought this one would stick!" Jack groaned, acting as if he was the one that went on the date instead of his son.

"You'll find the one eventually," his mom said soothingly, giving Greg a big hug.

Not wanting to stay and discuss it much more, Greg ran up to his room and plopped down on his bed.

"She saw the real me. I couldn't fool her," he muttered, legitimately feeling a bit bewildered.
