Promt- "looks like we'll be stuck here for awhile."
You would think that after all the social functions Eliza has had to go to in her life she'd be used to it by now. That she'd be able to with stand hours in a dress in heels smiling politely at politicians. The truth was she still hated them, and still could barely get through these nights in one piece.
Even now as a 35 year old mother of four she could feel her patients running thin. Which was most likely do to the fact she'd hardly seen her husband all evening. She came to this Gala with him yet she spent most of her night entertaining old senators. And all they would talk about is how she used to be prettier when she was younger.
"I remember when you were so young and beautiful, you are still pretty but children will do that to you." Senator Hobart told her in a matter of fact tone.
Eliza smiled tightly and nodded. "Yes, right..." was all she could say to his statement as they had slowly worn her out and that was all she could think of.
"It even happened to my wife, of course I love her but she is not as beautiful as she used to be." He explained and Eliza once again nodded as he spoke. Sometimes she couldn't believe they let men like this run the country.
Her eyes drifted around the room, trying to find where her husband was now, but she couldn't seem to find him. She found this strange but she resisted the urge to furrow her brows as that would lead to an even longer conversation with the senators who were very easily getting on her nerves.
"Meet me in the back hall in five minutes, don't be late." A voice whispered in her ear then quickly disappeared.
Eliza turned her head to see her husband walk away and she could stop the smile grow on her face, even after years of marriage he still could make butterflies erupt in her stomach. She loved him so much, and she knew that he loved her as he was the most affectionate man she's ever met.
Eliza was ready to make a break to the back hall as fast as she could but she knew it was important to keep a cool head. She and her husband had their fair share of sneaking around due to her parents being so strict, so she knew what to do but sometimes it was hard to seem calm when she was excited. After a few minutes she calmly excused herself from the conversation and slowly made her way through the crowd. People kept trying trying to stop her for a friendly conversation, but she was trying desperately to get to her husband.
She stopped once giving a few pleasantries but quickly made her leave. After that she gave as many excuses as she could possibly think of as to why she wouldn't be able to stop and chat. Luckily each person had nodded politely and let her go on her way. And thankfully she made it to the hall her eyes landing on her husband immediately.
"Hello my dear Betsy..." Alexander said with a smile gently placing his hand on her cheek.
"Hey..." she replied softly putting her hand over his.
"You seemed like you needed a break from that." He said causing a smile to form on Eliza's lips.
"Yeah, they were sort of draining me from all of my energy." She replied sighing softly her husbands lips on hers. "I wish we home..." she whispered.
"Me too.." Alexander quickly agreed.
"I wish I was asleep..." she added causing Alexander to chuckle.
"I thought this going somewhere else.." he said.
"Sorry love, I'm just so tired..." she told him, to which he replied.
"You never have to apologize to me, my darling Eliza..." he said softly kissing her forehead when they heard something.
"Mrs. Hamilton...?" A womans voice called causing Eliza to turn pale.
"It's senator Hobarts wife, I don't want to talks to her she so cruel.." Eliza said with a frown.
"Then you won't have to." Alexander told her opening the closet behind Eliza, guiding her inside, closing the door a bit, leaving it cracked so they could leave once Mrs. Hobart was gone.
"Mrs. Hamilton..?" The older woman's voice called as Eliza and Alexander stayed huddled in the closet trying to be as quiet as humanly possible as to not be found.
They could hear her walking past the closet once again calling for Eliza causing her to flinch as she was so close. Her hand touched the slightly ajar closet door, humming questioningly. Eliza held onto Alexander preying she didn't open the door, luckily she didn't, she closed it and walked away calling for Eliza still. Once the woman was gone Eliza let out a breath of relief and went to open the door but her eyebrows furrowed.
"Alexander there's no handle..."
"Looks like we'll be stuck here for awhile." Alexander said with a small chuckle.
