Confidence

OC: Sabrina Vazquez
At the sound of a ring of her doorbell, Maria hurried to get something presentable on. Who could possibly be at the door at such an early hour? Her eyes wandered over to the cradle in the corner of her room, where her darling child lay asleep. Heart swelling up in pride, she pecked a kiss on the baby's cheek, before rushing to answer the door.
After she unlocked the door, and swung it open, a familiar, but distant face appeared in front of her. Irresistible lips, clouded over eyes, and a tousled hair situation, the woman before her hadn't been who she was expecting. And she was so blown away by her presence that all of a sudden she stumbled backwards.
Taking that as an invitation to come inside, the woman without a name entered the home, fumbling with the lock. Once she successfully locked it again, a cheerful laugh left her lips eagerly. "Ah, still locks like it used to."
Maria crossed her arms. She had regained herself and wasn't pleased. On the outside at least, she was determined to pull off an unsatisfied expression. But on the inside, deep down in her heart, everything was pumping faster than a few minutes before.
"Sabrina, what a pleasure to see you again. I wonder what brings you around so early this time?" Cocking her head, Maria eyed the woman up and down. She couldn't help doing so while starting an interrogation.
"We haven't talked or encountered one another in a while. I felt awfully lonely without you."
Don't fall for her games. Maria could feel her heart melt at the sight of the attractive woman beside her. Her back straightened up when she reminded herself of who to be. She ended up being the weaker one in these conversations. It was time to change that around.
"If I recall correctly, it was my husband who told you to leave. Remember?" Both women nodded at each other knowingly. They shared the similar fierce smirk, but inside they had the exact same gut feeling about the night it all had gone wrong for them.
"And if I recall correctly, your husband said something along the lines of how he didn't want another whore under his roof. Why don't we make it simpler for him? Let's run away."
"What?" Dropping her composed posture, Maria fidgeted in her spot. Out of all the things she could do, running away wasn't an option at all. Her child was still a baby, unable to fend for herself, and helpless to be left alone with her pathetic father
On the other hand, running away seemed to be the only good idea that had come in her way in a long time. The two of them could start a new life. Without the madness of previous lives and history. There could finally be hope.
"I haven't been around for a while, but I assure you, my affections are just the way they used to be. Trust me." And then all of a sudden one of Sabrina's hands was pressed against her waist and cheekbone. Maria breathed out deeply. If she had been more cautious, she could have controlled this.
Chest heaving up and down, as the heat rose between them, both women stayed utterly silent. Sabrina pulled her up against her body, allowing the other woman to let a sound that neither of them knew was possible. Maria blushed scarlet, feeling three fingers on the laces of her nightgown.
"Wouldn't it be better to get away from him?"
One lace untied. Maria glared up into her eyes, breathing as calmly as she could. With a forced tone, she whispered, "James needs me here."
Another lace half untied and then tugged. "Are you saying that he needs a worthless whore such as yourself? He called you that many times, remember? I also recall your beloved husband leaving bruises on your skin. Do you really want to stay with him?" Sabrina knew how to push her buttons, and she was certainly doing it well.
Maria bit the inside of her cheek. "He wouldn't allow it. If he found out-"
"You know he wouldn't be able to do anything to you once you're gone. He'd be left to fend for himself out here, all alone." Sabrina could sense the shyness growing on the other woman's cheek. But the heat was still rising in between the slight gap in their curves that pressed together.
Eyes welling up, she thought about it. Maria looked up the staircase out of the corner of her eye and remembered her daughter. Susan. She couldn't leave her all alone. Not with an abusive man. Not with someone who could possibly throw her out in the street once his wife was gone.
A surprised gasp left her lips and Sabrina questioned it. "Have you made a decision?"
"I can't go." Pushing her back, Maria tripped over her feet. All her mind was shouting was her daughter's name over and over again. She was the priority in the situation. Not running away with someone.
Sabrina watched her every movement in disgust. "You have to open your eyes," she muttered under her breath. Maria heard the sarcastic phrase and turned back to her. Half sobbing as she spoke, the exhausted mother began to heat up in two different ways.
"Open my eyes? I don't need to open my eyes, just close them! I'm needed here and that's how it's going to-"
"No!" Sabrina stepped forward and for the first time during that night, she looked actually frightened. Hands reached out to hold onto the smaller woman's body, all she received was a rush of frigid air. "He's abusing you and the pain, it's killing you, Maria. I need to get you out of here before he does something worse."
"I'm not going," she replied sharply, clinging onto the stairwell. Sabrina became impatient and threw herself forward and up in front of her. Her face was an unexplainable mess as she cried out the next few words.
"Please, this is for your sake. I want to keep you safe from that monster. Run away and it'll be-"
Boiled up anger spilled out of her right at that moment. Maria heard herself scream in the most terrifying way, "I'm not leaving my daughter here with him! I can't let her face what her mother went through. Susan comes first." Stomping her foot on the ground, she smiled to herself.
Sabrina opened her mouth to speak, taking a few breaths before murmuring, "But the pain is miserable for you. Maria, you're weak and-"
"So what? He can tear me apart and break my bones, but that man cannot ruin my daughter's life. I want her to have a life worth living, unlike her mother. What's he broken down, he's built up in my confidence. Who knew pain could create a lasting quality and power inside such a torn up heart."
Maria heaved a sigh, hearing the sound of her daughter's crying. Neither woman spoke another word, just parted their separate ways, leaving one to head out and the other to climb a staircase, with a spring in her step.
"Hush, darling. Mama's here," she whispered to her baby, cooing at her little face. Out of the window, in the distance, she could see Sabrina's shadow vanish into the dark. Not thinking much more of it, the mother tended to her child. All distractions were gone at the moment for the both of them.
As Maria rocked her daughter back and forth, she let out a shaky breath. You have got to be brave, her voices inside her mind told her in a comforting way. It was at that second she heard the door to the house open. "I'm home!"
Shuddering at the sound of her husband's voice, Maria reminded herself of the decision she'd made. Susan had been the reason she stayed. For her child's sake, she'd endure the pain and need for pleasure.
More confident than ever, the mother, alone in her room, said a prayer to herself. However long the marriage would continue, she would survive it. With a whole lot of confidence deep down, of course.
