Coffee Days (4)

Two weeks had passed since the family dinner and the makeout session in her bedroom. Eliza had contacted him again, texting late into the night, and walking with him between classes. It seemed like their relationship was blossoming by the second.

The only thing standing in their way in being affectionate in public was her sisters. Angelica trailed behind the two of them with a glare on her face, clearly trying to figure out just how far things were going. Peggy would do something similar, maybe questioning her older sister and stalking the boy's social media.

Eliza knew getting involved with a guy would end up with her sisters being nosy. But he wasn't just any guy. He was the guy. Alexander truly cared for her and showed that in his writings, texts, and of course, affection.

She couldn't let that run off, just because of some pestering siblings.

"Look, why don't you just tell them? It'd make things simpler." After a day that dragged on with lectures and presentations, Alexander had offered to study with her. Their study sessions never ended with textbooks spread open. Lips and hands found their way to each other and it went from there.

But when they caught their breath and discussed the situation of sophomore year and their feelings, a lot was exchanged. "You don't know my sisters. Overprotective and always ruining things. Angelica would tear us apart if she found out."

"If she found out what? That we're making out in your room every time I'm over?" Alexander crawled across the bed to his girlfriend, kissing her cheek gently. Eliza blushed at the touch, despite the fact she couldn't stop thinking about the reaction of her siblings.

Maybe his loving gestures and words got a little too cluttered in her head, for the very next day at school, things took a turn. The end of history neared, followed by the bell ringing, and students rushing out the door. Eliza scrambled to collect her books. She was eager to see Alexander on their way to calculus.

"You're heading to calculus now, right?"

Dropping most of her books at the sudden voice, Eliza glanced up to see her darling sister only a few feet away. Popping a piece of bubblegum in her mouth loudly, Angelica heaved her bag higher on her shoulder, awaiting an answer to her question.

"Yeah, I am. Why do you-"

"Well, it wouldn't be a bother if I walked with you? Besides, we haven't really talked as sisters in a while, hm?" Angelica tapped her foot, smacking the gum in her mouth again. If you could stop popping that gum around in such an annoying manner, then yes, Eliza thought.

Of course she wouldn't ever dare to say that to her sister's face. Instead, pulling on a cheerful face, she said, "Not at all." She slung her bag on her shoulder and headed for the door, older sister right on her heel.

Her heart dropped when she noticed Alexander halfway up the hall, looking around for her. His face brightened up the second she stepped out and he hurriedly went to escort her, stopping in his tracks suddenly at the sight of Angelica.

Angelica eyed him, popping the gum again with interest in those eyes of her. "Late for class, Hamilton? Move along then." She shooed him away from her sister, wrapping a protective arm around the younger girl. Eliza tried to say something to him, but he just hung his head and walked off to calculus.

Seeing no problem in putting sophomores in line, Angelica flipped her hair. "Now tell me, do you have a thing for Alexander? You two seem close. He's been hanging around the house and all, I thought-"

"And what if I do? Why does the status of my relationships impact you?"

For a moment, neither sister spoke. Angelica bit the inside of her gum, wincing as she tasted a droplet of blood. I care about you, that's why, she angrily thought. I don't want to see my baby sister get screwed over by some idiot.

"You want to know why? I'll tell you with great pleasure," Angelica snapped, taking her arm from her sister's shoulder. "You've never been in a relationship before. Guys are desirable on the outside, but rotten on the inside. I don't want him to turn out to be that rotten and break your heart."

Eliza crossed her arms and stuck her nose in the air. Quickening her pace to class, she replied, "Alexander is a gentleman. He's not the way you think he is. I care for him, so please respect that." The two of them reached the classroom. She went to open the door, but Angelica pulled her arm back.

"Gentlemen can be real cheaters, sis. You're throwing your heart out there for him and it could easily be ripped apart." Angelica didn't even break a smile when her sister began to laugh loudly.

"Talk all you want, but it's not going to change my mind. Alexander is the one thing in my life right now that's not completely messed up. He is the one." Eliza pressed her lips together tightly. "You aren't allowed to tell me otherwise."

"Look," Angelica persisted. "I don't care if you two have been secretly together behind my back if that's why you're being all defense, but I do care about you. Boys aside, this is all about how we're sisters."

Groaning, Eliza tugged her arm away. "I'm already five minutes late to class, is that what is considered a sisterly gesture in your book?"

As if she'd been shot in the heart, Angelica took a step back. "No, it's not. The only rule in my book is staying true to yourself. It's the one piece of advice you could-"

"I love him, Angelica. You can tear apart anything else in my life, just not my love for Alexander, alright? I would have told you sooner, but you always come at me with these long, drawn out advice things and overprotective intentions. If you're really my sister, then leave me be and respect it."

Eliza turned back to the door, sneaking a look into the classroom. Three desks back from the front row was Alexander, hand raised, eagerly waving it about. A little smile crossed her lips briefly at the sight.

"You don't even listen to me anymore. That boy must have done wonders to your thinking process, just as much as the skin on your body." Angelica's eyes flashed in a meaningless way. She had lost all self control about the situation in her mind.

Self consciously covering her neck, Eliza glared at her sister. "This conversation meant nothing to me, if it makes a difference. You don't need to worry about me or my boyfriend. Let me have this one thing." She pulled her collar up higher around her neck, shivering at what her sister had said.

"Well, when he breaks your heart and you're looking for sympathy, don't come crawling back to me for goddamn sisterly love."

Turning on her heel, the older sister head the other way down the hall. Hair swaying back and forth on her shoulders, she left a chilling feel to the air in her wake. Eliza clutched her bag, not thinking much of it, and stepping into the classroom.

"Hey, are you alright?" Just as she sat down, dear Alexander had a few words to whisper to her. Eliza cheekily smiled, hiding the sobbing part of her underneath it.

"Yeah, it's only some sister drama, nothing else. I've been living with her long enough to know how to deal with it. Trust me." She let out a soft laugh, being sure to cover it up with a cough so their teacher didn't notice.

"I trust you."

Eliza could sense her cheeks heat up into a warm rose color. She leaned back in her chair, sneaking a glance at Alexander, who had already begun to answer another question.

The words of her sister had completely faded away, except one little, guys are desirable on the outside, but rotten on the inside. To Eliza, that was only a silly phrase. Alexander couldn't be anything less than her prince in shining armor.

She wouldn't ever believe it, because in her eyes, nothing could go possibly wrong.
