A letter from Maria
Society is confused. They keep on giving Hamilton the blame, But that was my fault actually.
Beside the point. I wanted to talk of the Reynolds pamphlet. I... I wrote it. I've only ever told this to Peggy, and she's quite a cute little girl. I, I...was trying to accomplish a deed I can only say I'm not proud of. I was trying to split you and Hamilton, so I could have him to myself. Stupid, wouldn't you say?
I wrote the pamphlet so we could be together. People don't seem to understand that I care for him. I truly do. He made me feel important as he would touch my face and wipe away my tears. He is an amazing man. I believe that he can achieve great things. It just seemed that he was so unhappy. I thought you might have done this, but now I realize it wasn't your fault.
At the time I thought he deserved better. I thought he deserved ME.
My plan worked for a matter of moments before it crashed. You were hurt, and he was to blame. But then he stopped seeing me, secluding himself from everyone. He kept himself inside and never dared to peek outside. The only times he ever emerged was to have a short walk as he traveled to his gardens.
Then, after years of being alone, he and you finally moved uptown. To get away from the city, I guess. But it was weird to see you still with him. I thought you were done. I think everyone thought you were done. And word got around that your little Phillip passed. .......... I... I don't know what to say.
It was heart breaking. I guessed you were going to mourn together. For the time he was with you, I hope he was happy. That's all I ever wanted him to be. Happy. He seemed so sad, so desperate for attention. That's the only reason I actually ever went to his house. I thought he might have needed some company. Then I realized that he needed to feel needed, wanted, and he most definitely needed to take a break.
I was trying to relieve his pain, and it seemed at the time I relieved it, for just a moment, until he got stressed and worried once again. He did keep on asking me to come back, and I was always hesitant. But he seemed to be getting better, so I agreed. Then my husband found out and thought it was Alexanders fault. I felt terrible.
And in the time that I was with him, I fell for him. His intelligent eyes, his hunger pang frame. He practically set my heart on fire by the end of our adventure. And, I was a little drastic. I'm sorry that I wrote the pamphlet. I just wanted to let you know. You deserve to know.
I... I... I loved him. I.... I miss him. I know you miss him too. I'm sorry I lured him in. It was my fault. Please.... Please forgive me.
