3: scouts and libraries

An: hello! Chapter 3 coming your way! I am in a very good mood today. Luckily todays chapter is very fluffy!

Summary: parent bonding and boredom cured!
............................

Time passes and the boys adjust to the new daily routine. Which is to say, they were starting to get bored. Summer had just started, and there was only so much two kids could do when they are home all day with their new mom. They played outside, inside, upstairs, under the stairs, and everywhere in between. George was at work, and Martha mostly did stay-at-home mom stuff. She tried to keep them busy, but she couldn't really keep up with them.

One Saturday, when on Mr.Washingtons day off, he had an idea. "Hey Martha?"

"Yes dearest?"

"What do say to getting the boys into some scouts?"

" oh hon that sounds wonderful! Although, i don't know if Alex is quite old enough yet..."

"Ooh, that's a good point..." George furrowed his brows.

"Oh! That reminds me! I wanted to start taking the boys to the library, they always have something going on for the kids during summer break." Martha remembered.

"That's perfect! You can take Alex to the libraries on days that Lafayette goes to Boy Scouts!"

"Oh hon, that's an amazing idea! The first scout meeting should be next Friday, then they will meet every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday after."

"I can definitely take Laf next Friday, then I could try and go with them whenever I can. You know, I was quite the scout myself at his age."

"Oh yes, I'm aware." Martha chuckled.

"We're so good at this." George mused.

"We try." Martha smiled. They kissed, because... well because they felt like it. Then the moment was interrupted.

"Ewww." Was heard around the corner, from little Alex.

"Alex! You ruined their moment!" Gilbert elbowed his brother.

"It's ok, I was just about to call you anyway, what do you want for lunch?" Martha asked.

*time skip brought to you by julietas healing arepas! (Encantó anyone?)*

Friday had finally arrived. And the boys were both nervous and excited. Nervous, because they weren't used to the idea of doing stuff apart, but excited to see what these new activities had in store.

Laf got into his dads work car as Alex got into the family car, which was mostly driven my Martha.

"See you later, hon. I'll call you when we're on our way home." Martha hugged George.

"Ok, I will call you when the meeting over. Talk to you later." George gave his wife a quick peck on the cheek as they parted ways.

Mr. washington and Lafayette (I'm taking this horse by the reins...)

Laf fiddled with his bags strap in the backseat. He loved the outdoors, but he had never been apart of a club like this. What if they don't like me? What if they think I'm weird? What if they ask too many questions? What if I get lost? What if-

"Nervous?" George asked Laf through the rear view mirror.

"O-oh, um, yeah, sort of..." Laf admitted, looking down. He almost looked ashamed.

"Hey, don't worry, kid. You're going to do great! I loved Boy Scouts when I was young, and you love being outside, this is a great opportunity for you to get out there, and see the world!" Washington delivered his fatherly speech. Laf smiled at his attempt to undo his nerves, but it proved ineffective as they pulled into the parking lot.

The building was out in the edge of the woods. It looked like a huge cabin, and there were people going in and out, and a bunch of kids were running around outside.

"Ready?" George asked as they got out of the car.

"Ready as I'll ever be...." (Easiest reference I've ever hidden tbh)

They walk up to the little table right outside the cabin entrance. Their greeted by a teen, no older then 19, wearing a red cap. "Hi! I'm Nino! You must the newcomer, welcome to Boy Scouts!"

"Yes, hello, I'm George. Go on, son, introduce yourself." Mr.Washington said politely. He looked down and laf, who was had stayed very close to his dads side. He took a small step forward.

"Hi, I'm Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette, but... you can call me Gilbert, or laf." He said. He had no clue why he went ahead with using his full name, but too late now, I guess.

"Ok, laf, come on inside, and we can get you you're uniform and sash." They follow Nino inside.

They pick up his uniform and head to the bathroom so Laf can change. He changes as quickly as possible, not wanting to leave everyone waiting. When he is done, they head out side where everyone is already starting to gather round. The Boy Scouts got in a giant circle while the parents that stuck around stood just outside the circle. George wandered over to some of the other parents and stuck up a conversation while Laf joined the ever growing circle.

"Alright everyone, who's ready for summer!" One of the counselors yelled, all the boys cheered and clapped. "Alright, we have few newcomers today, so why don't we go around and introduce ourselves? You, with the curly ponytail, go ahead and start us off, and we'll go clockwise from there."

"Oh uh, ok. Im.. Lafayette but you can call me Gilbert, or Laf, I don't care." He said, hoping he spoke loud enough.

" my name is Samuel!"

"Hi! I'm sokka!"

"Hello everyone, I'm jet!"

"Hello, I'm Chris. My brother works here!"

"Im Donald!"

Everyone went around the circle and gave their names. When they finished, they started playing some ice breakers, like a kid friendly version of never-have-I-ever, would you rather, and a few others the author can't think of right now. (*big gasp* my fourth wall! You broke it!)

After a short while, the instructor pulled out some snacks and the boys munched away. Laf managed to find some kids to talk to, but he didn't really hit it off with anyone. After snack time, the instructors gathered all the kids together a get them ready for a short hike.

"Hey son, how are you doing?" George said, catching up with Laf. They had been walking for a while now, and were close to their destination.

"I'm good... just... wow this hill is steep." Laf said, trying to catch his breath.

"You will be ok, son. The steeper the hike, the better the view." Mr.Washington replied, a mischievous look in his eye.

" what do you..." laf trailed off as they entered the clearing. It was a huge cliff that looked over the Boy Scout building and the forest around it. "Oh,, wow, you weren't kidding about the view." Gilbert breathed.

"These woods are the beautiful home of Manhattans Boy Scout meeting area! (An: what do they call it? You know the building that they would come to? Ive never done scouts, someone help!) but they have a secret..." one of the scout leaders preceded to tell the legend of the forest. Laf listened intently, and George couldn't help but be proud of how well laf had been doing that day.

When the story was finished, they headed back down the mountain. "So, who was your first big scout meeting?" George asked his son.

"You know, it was actually pretty cool, I kinda like this..." laf smiled. George beamed. This is going to a wild adventure... I'm excited to see what it has in store... they both think.

Rewind....

Mrs Washington and Alexander (Hamilton, my name is...)

Mrs Washington and alex get into the family car and start driving to the library. "So, Alex, the library is big, but their going to have a bunch of stuff set up for you kids to do. Just don't wander off, ok sweetheart?"

" Yes mama.' Alex replied. He decided to call his new parents 'mama' and 'papa' and if he ever needed to refer to his birth parents, he would say 'mom' and 'dad'. Laf followed that same principal, sense it just made everything easier.

"Good... you excited to see the library?" Martha asked, trying to make conversation.

"Yeah! I love books, and art, and crafts..." he smiled, but there was something glimmering in his eye. Martha recognized the worry.

"Im glad. You know, your papa was always quite the reader, too." Martha said. She had been trying to get Alex to let down his guard with George, but k=no matter how gentle George was, Alex didn't seem to fully trust him.

"Really?" Alex turned away from the window to look up at his mama.

"Oh yes, huge reader. In fact, he told me that he grew reading those same boxcar children you and Gilbert read." Martha said, smirking.

Alex looked up at her, wonder in his eyes.  Turned, looking out his window in comfortable silence.

When they arrived to the library, Alex was marveling at absolutely everything. Martha was both musing and gushing at Alex's face upon seeing the book displays.

"Come on, Alex , let's go over to the Children's  section." Martha said, guiding him towards the more colorful area.

When they turned into the nook that had big, bold letters, CHILDREN BOOKS above it, they saw a bunch of kids reading and coloring. There were less parents then they were kids, and a few that had name tags, showing they worked there.

Alex hid behind Martha's leg. "Awe, don't worry, dear, we are going to have all sorts of fun." Martha walked him forward as one of the librarian called for everyone's attention.

"Ok, everyone, my name is Jane, and I have some super fun crafts for you all to try! Gather around so I can show you the instructions."

Everyone picked a seat that had some materials in front of them. Alex was careful not to touch anything without permission, no matter how curious he was. Martha took notice to this. Alex is still so rigid in some situations. Hopefully we can teach him to just relax and.. and be a kid...

Alex struggled on his project. They were making paper binoculars and he needed to punch a hole in the empty TP rolls for the string . He couldn't get the hole puncher to work properly.

"Do you need help, dear?"

"No, I-I... almost, there..." Alex said, struggling with the hole puncher.

Martha shook her head at how stubborn her son could be sometimes. She tenderly put her hands over Alexander's and showed him how to do it properly.

"Thanks momma..." Alex mumbled, as he moved on for the next step.

After they finished the craft, Martha let Alex choose a couple of books. He got a kids book on the American revolution (all about Chris Jackson and the other founding fathers) for Laf and got Matilda for himself. He sort of struggled to read it still, but Laf and Martha would help him.

Martha took Alex through the adult section and picked some books up for herself and went to the check out. The rest of the way home was uneventful, and Martha helped Alex read his book when Laf and George got home.

"Hi Laf!" Alex said enthusiastically.

"Hey mon petit lion, how's it going?" Laf ruffled his little brothers hair as he got into the barstool next to him.

"I got a new book, see?!" Alex said, all excited.

I do see that, mon ami. What's it about?" Laf innocently asked. Little did he know that that set Alex off on a huge rant.

Martha giggled as Alex got super excited recounting the books story to Laf. She leaned on George as the stood in the kitchen across from the boys. "Today went well, didn't it?"

"Yeah, Gilbert talked to a lot of other kids. I don't know if he really clicked with anyone, but he definitely won't have trouble fitting in at scouts."

" yeah? Well Alex didn't really get that much interaction, sense it is a library, after all, but it was still nice to see him so happy. That boy seriously loves reading."

The couple embraced each other lovingly as the watched the boys, their boys, talk about their day. It was quiet, domestic moment that the Washingtons reveled in.

But how long could that last?

An: oOoOoOoOoOh an cliffhanger?! Foreshadowing?! Who knows~? ...... well I do, but for now, that's chapter 3, I will see you all next time, byeee!
