Chapter 9: Explosive Secrets

Inside a command tower, one of the Officers gives a mission briefing to a Spartan cladded in red with a customized CQB helmet, "We have a problem that needs done. There have been reports of Covenant in this area and I need you with a special someone to take care of them." The Spartan stood still and just listen - however, internally they just want to groan and get this over with.

"Now, recent reports showed that the Covenant were in this area nearby the mountains. Get there and destroy them. Failure to do so, well you know the drill."

After that, what presume to be long, mission briefing, the spartan walks down the hall to find this "Special Someone". They already know that the Reapers are found and are inducted back into service. Wouldn't surprise them if the person ended up being one of the Reapers.

Going to the armory, the spartan saw one of the Reapers showing the Marines their combat knife, which is more serrated and tooth-looking than anything else. The Reaper himself have very protective armor, but with chains wrapped around the legs and wrist.

"Really", one of the Marines asked to which the Reaper jokingly replied, "Yep. I just can't believe it. Your knives reminds me of kitchenware." This causes the Reaper and the Marines to chuckle a bit, right before the Spartan came face to face of the Reaper.

"So", The Reaper turned to face the spartan, "You must be Daisy-023, right?" The Spartan replied with a nod, presenting their stoicism infront of the scarred face Reaper. "You better hope you know your distance around bombs", he said to the Spartan as he puts his helmet on, "Or... Boom."

"So these are old humanities super-soldier program", Daisy talk to herself as she figure how large of a gap is between back and now. She just can't believe the attitude this man is showing. This is not how soldiers operate. Let alone a Super-soldier.

"Ey, you alright there", The Reaper ask, to which Daisy immediately stops her thoughts and said, "I'm alright."

"Okay", the Reaper turned around, "let's get movin' then", and proceeded to walk towards a Falcon. Daisy soon follow the Reaper afterwards. Her mind is still not right after her training as a Spartan. Maybe by accompanying him on the mission might prove how powerful emotions can be when used correctly.

After landing nearby the Covenant base, which is a far distance, The Super-soldiers make their journey through the jungle. The thick vegetation might give way to their position and the Covenant is quite fond of their cloaking technology. However, their tech would not be able to surpass something so crucial it would end either way the same way. And that's exactly what happened to a sneaky Elite.

The Elite thought he would gain a trophy of the Demon's head and kill the Reaper afterwards. Unfortunately for the Elite in question, the Reaper is two steps ahead and blow up his head.

Death #40: Elite's head blown up.

Daisy looked back as her partner reloaded his shotgun and flip it. Though it may be short, it does pack quite a punch when adding slug rounds.

After much walking they made it to the base. It seems as though the UNSC tried to brute force it, but it seems minimally futile. The base is in tatters, yet despite all of that, remains strong.

"Looks like we have to clean up their mess", the Reaper commented, taking his marksman rifle and held it in his hands, "Let's finish what the UNSC have started." Then Daisy began following the Reaper as they sneak their way into the base.

The spartan can't help but wonder about the kind of words that Reaper used. She remembered fondly of her time on the Mona Lisa and the prisoners there do say similar wording. Was he used to be a criminal? An escaped convict? Whatever the cases maybe, Daisy must not let her guard down, even in the presence of an ally - a rather dangerous one at that.

The hallways are clattered with he echos of grunts elites and brutes running around. In this state, most forms of warfare were to leave them alone. However, because of the Covenant's rather savage tactics - some even acting like animals - the UNSC dare not to take any chances of them getting back up. Back with the Super-soldiers, they placed bombs in various locations, but predominantly at the foundation. It is then that they were found.

The Elites ordered the Grunts and Jackals to open fire on the humans' positions. They all do their best to try and tag them, but the speed is so unprecedented, that they die by the time they even landed a shot on. The humans are fast, but the Covenant were numerous.

A swarm of grunts were holding plasma grenades as their Elite Officer orders them to launch the grenades at the "demons". Thinking quickly, the Reaper took something from his back and throw it to the ground. Just as the grenades closes by, the thing spring into action and blow up all of the incoming grenades.

The fight was long and hard, but in the end, the humans are victorious.

"Nice Job", Daisy complement the Reaper, to which the latter replied, "Thank you. You aren't bad yourself." The spartan smiled a bit before looking at the device the Reaper has thrown down. She ask him, "What is that thing?" Confused, the Reaper turned to her and ask, "What thing?" Daisy then pointed to the strange little device that saved them from the numerous plasma grenades that were thrown by the Covenant.

"Oh that", the Reaper notices what the spartan is referring to. He walks up to the device as he explained, "That is called a Trophy System. Think of it as an anti-explosive device meant to take out thrown explosives", he fold the device to its compact state and pack it back up.

"Wow", Daisy think to herself. Okay, so old humanity might be very creative with the limitations. "Hmm... So this device was used to protect from grenades? We definitely need something like that."

"My name is Cortana, CTN-0452-9, and this is log number 0280. Log entry name: Trophy System

From what we have learned from the Reapers is that this old device is an anti-explosive device meant to intercepted any explosives within a radius of 10-15 meters. Once the thrown grenade entered the radius, the machine determine the speed, arc and direction of the projectile all the while its intercepting systems would detect the grenade once it got close up to 5 meters. AIs can do that, but it'll have to be lower than a dumb. Maybe the UNSC should make some of them next time."

The two super-soldiers silently walked down every corridor and hallway to plant more of the explosives. During this, Daisy did ended up knowing the Reaper's name - or at least his nickname - "Havoc". Based on the equipment, it is no wonder that his nickname would be Havoc, considering the explosives he carries.

Down one of the hallways, the two heard noises of grunts and jackals. Immediately, Havoc rushed down the hallway and checked every room in between for any covenant. One of the grunts peaked out and got shot in the head - followed by two more unknown covenant being killed.

Death #41-3: Grunt and two unknown covenant death by headshots.

Havoc stacked on one side of the door, while Daisy stack on the other side. Once the door was open, Havoc throw a gas grenade inside, causing the entire room to be filled with white phosphorus gas. Daisy shoots a couple of shots in, until the muzzle flash makes contact with the white gas, thus igniting the room into a fiery blaze, which would no doubt kill anything inside of the room.

The two entered the room to see the chard up corpses of the covenant here. Their bodies ever boiling with their skin melted off their skeletons. It is truly a horrifying site to behold, perhaps to those who haven't seen melted carcasses before. Either way, the two continued onwards.

Daisy took a quick peak to see what next should the two be dealing with. "Great", Daisy sarcastically commented seeing the units of Grunts and Jackals along with a squad of Elites. However, the spartan failed to notice an approaching Elite, who was mere inches from her. The alien activated its energy sword as it swung down at the demon before them. Daisy took a second to look back, to then being shoved aside.

The scream that followed, shocked Daisy to the core. A thumb latter and then a scream of the Elite. Daisy watches as a tall, dark and menacing figure killed the Elite with one arm; crushing the alien's wrist, smacking its head before grabbing the Elite and crushed the alien's throat - a sound of gasping was left.

Death #44: Elite death by crushed throat.

Daisy stood up and realize that the figure is Havoc - with a missing arm. The Reaper looked to the spartan and asked her calmly, "You okay, Spartan?" Daisy frantically stood up as she wondered why the Reaper isn't fazed by his missing arm.

"Havoc, your arm", Daisy stuttered as she pointed to the stump that was Havoc's arm. Havoc, upon realizing about his missing arm, goes to search for it. Eventually, he found his severed arm and places it onto his back.

Havoc comes back to Daisy and ask her calmly, "So, what's the plan?" "First", Daisy started, "We get this mission done; second, we need to get to med bay as fast as possible." Havoc nodded and took out his secondary gun: a lever-action shotgun. Havoc turn to Daisy, "I only got one wing now, you have to help me reload if I'm out." Daisy nodded and the two look over their cover and plan.

Not too long after, there is a gunfight many grunts fell to the blast of pellets or the firepower of the assault rifle. The Elites fires back at the two super-soldiers, causing them to dodge for cover. The Elites kept their distance for sometime - but not for long. While one of their brothers escape, the rest soon met their face as one was blasted in the face, another had their neck snapped and the last one without a head.

Before the Super-soldiers were to move on, the sound of a squad of elites comes their way. Havoc volunteer to stay and hold them off, but Daisy rejected - it is too risky considering that Havoc lost an arm. With no time to spare and with the approaching horde, Havoc took something from his stash, shoved Daisy away and close the door. Daisy tries to reason with Havoc, but the Reaper simply told her, "Don't worry, I'll be back."

The door closes and Daisy looked down. "No", Daisy said to herself as she heard the sounds of Elites and her partner fighting inside, behind those doors. The spartan then notices a little thing on the floor and picked it up. It's long and have a red button with a blinking red light. "I will never forget about you, Havoc", Daisy put the device on her belt before sprinting into the exit with her weapon in hand.

Meanwhile, Havoc is being an absolute monster to the Elites. Grenades were everywhere, killing the Elites and leaving only a few. With no way to reload, he goes to the remainder up-close and personal - fortunately, these Elites didn't equip themselves with the energy sword. A grin goes across his face as he smashes the Elites bones with his mace, braking the bones to near fatal injuries - many died by internal bleeding there after. Now it comes down to three.

The first Elite rushes at Havoc in a blinding rage, but the Reaper catches the fist, headbutted the Elite before stomping his heavy boots to that neck of theirs.

Death #45: Elite death by crushed neck.

The others were scared and goes to fire what remaining rounds are left. Havoc just books at them, not giving a damn on what is essentially his damaged armor. On the flip side, he did obliterate one of them with a strike with the mace, while the other has a long rod piercing through the armor.

Death #46-7: Elites killed by cracked head and stabbed through the body.

Daisy fought her way to the outside, till she saw light. However, it seems as though the Covenant are making haste and get their pilots on the vehicles. The spartan gritted her teeth, after Havoc sacrificed himself to ensure she lived. Daisy surveys the area and notices a turret on the roof. It won't be much, but it'll do just fine.

Daisy saw the grunts protecting the gunner of that turrets. It's a few distance away, but nothing like a good sprint would be able to get to there. A couple of grunts down and with the gunner killed, the Spartan took control of the turret and fire. She first fire at the two Ghost that were about to leave, before preemptively mowing down the numerous Elites, Grunts, Jackals and Drones on the ground, staining the walls, floors and vehicles with their blood.

A couple of minutes later, Daisy fight the remaining Covenant on the ground, however, there were more blocking the entrance. Daisy have to move back to avoid the fire. She manages to kill most in her way before being backed into a wall, guns pointing at her. The spartan held out the detonator before a decision is made in her head, "If I die here...", she held her thumb over the button, "then I will die avenging him." Daisy closes her eyes, take a deep breath and...

Suddenly, all of them heard a loud sound, booming in their ears as 2 Covenant vehicles were blown up and a third killing the Covenant surrounding Daisy. The pilot walked out of the vehicle and it is none other than Havoc.

"I'm back"

Daisy's eyes widen as she saw him all well and alive! She fight the urge to laugh, or make anything of appreciation towards the Reaper's survival. Alas, she ended up embracing him. Havoc didn't mind that she does this; he actually accepts it for being somewhat of a normal response. Daisy hugged Havoc for sometime until he realizes what just happened. She quickly separate herself from him and blush in embarrassment under that helmet of hers. Havoc laughed a bit before going up to Daisy and ask her, "Missed me?"

"Dude", Daisy exclaimed, "H-How..." Before she can finish her question, the sound of more Covenant troopers are on their way to the site. Havoc padded Daisy's shoulders and exclaimed, "Come on! We have to get out of here!"

The two sprinted out of the base and with the press of a button, the entire Covenant base collapse with the booming sound of bombs blowing up. The two then landed into a patch of snow, before looking up to see their next big problem. It was loud, with was large and it is a collection of dirt, snow, trees and debris: an Avalanche.

Daisy and Havoc ran for their lives as the approaching disaster consumed the destroyed base. The two ran for the sides, with mere inches of the avalanche closing in on them. Fortunately, they manage to make it just in time as the disaster passes by.

"Phew", Daisy panted, "That was something." "Yep", Havoc agreed, "That was fun."

"What do you mean fun? We almost got ourselves killed, not to mention about the little handicap you got."

"This thing", he showed his stump, "It's normal for me"

(Editorial note: No human would be able to survive that long with their arm chopped off... Unless you're a crazy person like Fergus.)

"You guys have one heck of a lot of secrets."

. . . . .

The two super-soldiers came back to the UNSC base, much to the shock of everyone, save for Shadow Team. Eventually Havoc got his armor removed and went to the doctors to see if they can reattach his arm back. It was tough, but they did it with three new discoveries. However, one of them went unnoticed by a particular Spartan.

Havoc went to his room before being stopped by Daisy in the hallway. He asked her if she needed something, but Daisy simply said, "Let's talk inside." Nodding to her notion, Havoc lets her in and both sat on his bed.

Daisy was a bit nervous, but given the topic, she have to ask, "Havoc, what were you before you became who you are today?" Havoc looked at her with surprised. He did know that Daisy have been lingering about, but this become a bit too uncomfortable for the Reaper.

"What do you mean" He ask back, and then Daisy ask him once more, but with what she has heard in the doctor's room, "You were a prisoner before. Does 262 ring a bell?"

"Okay, you got me. I was a criminal."

"Yeah. How did you manage to become this then?"

"It's a long story. You see, when I was little, I had no parents to speak off. Years went by and I have to steal to survive. However, I ran into trouble with the law, you see. Eventually, I ended up being in the dump known as prison.

It was hell in there. Conditions were poor and there's seems to be some sort of hierarchy amongst the prisoners that I'm not aware of. Then there's the prison warden. I wouldn't put them as one of the more friendlier folks; in fact, he would personally beat the crap out of anyone not following the rules. I had to be tough and to be able to defend myself, but I must also be wary of the warden.

Eventually, I gained my freedom, but at the cost of my body. I'm not truly free, but it's better than prison."

"You became a Reaper then after."

"Well, training and augmentations, then training again. Sort of like that."

"I honestly have no idea what to say about you. I mean, I heard some of your criminal records, but you act all fine towards the Marines and others."

"Well, you Spartans do love to mask your emotions. However, you may be the most expressive, possibly with Kelly as well. And if you're wondering on that last part of your sentence, let's just say, I'm doing an act."

"Heh. Uh, your arm?"

"Oh, that? What about it?"

"How did you manage to go through the mission, without losing a large amount of blood?"

"Hmm... To tell you the truth, we expected this to happen and it won't be the first nor the last time I've gotten my arm chopped off."

"Just tell me."

"Alright. To be technical with you, we aren't exactly human."

"You think?"

"Yep. We are what you would call cyborgs, but not in a traditional sense."

"What do you mean? You mean someone like some Spartans?"

"We aren't those other Spartans that had lost their limbs. Instead, we have an endo-skeleton underneath all these skin and muscle and we do have some parts of us being replaced by more efficient machine parts. Things like the heart, only gains some amount of bio augmentations, other than that... We are humans on the outside, robot on the inside"

"That... might explain a lot."

Daisy then think nod a thought in her head. It could be stupid, but maybe as a simple test would do. She stood up and ask Havoc, "Wanna do some sparing?" Havoc simply chuckles, "After all of that, you're on."
