Hello everyone and welcome back to another Chapter in my Halloween series discussion page... Oh boy this should be a fun one to talk about. I am of course talking about the movie Halloween 5. The Revenge of Michael Myers. I don't like this movie. There are a few good things about it. But, for the most part this is a pretty bad movie and it started planting the seeds of complete insanity within the Halloween franchise.

Plot:
"After lying in a coma for a year, Michael Myers (Donald L. Shanks) awakens and stalks his way back to his small hometown in Illinois, intent on killing his niece, Jamie (Danielle Harris), who has been confined to a mental institution since Michael's last attempt to slay her. Suspecting a psychic link between Michael and Jamie, psychiatrist Dr. Sam Loomis (Donald Pleasance) joins forces with Sheriff Ben Meeker (Beau Starr) and attempts to stop Michael's latest rampage". I have a lot of problems with this movie and they start early on. I'll get a few of the good things done and out of the way first. But this is mostly a negative discussion.

The Good:

There are a few good things with this movie. Very few things. The first positive I can say right out the gate is that once again Danielle Harris is fantastic in this movie. She communicates primarily without any dialogue and she does a great job with the material she is given. She remains a likable lead and one of the few characters you can get behind in this movie. The next positive I will give this movie is that Donald Pleasance is still great as Dr. Loomis. You're never going to get a bad performance out of him in these films. After that I'll give the movie some credit for some decent kills and for going a bit darker this time. There is a good chase scene that has Jamie inside of a laundry chute and there is also one scene where Michael takes off his mask and has a sort of touching moment where the rage is seemingly gone. But then it comes back and he goes back to chasing Jamie again. Also, I guess one more positive is that Michael Myers is still awesome. But other than that, it is all negative from me.

The Bad:

Ok where do we start with this one? No, seriously where do we start? This is a bad movie. The first Halloween movie that I don't recommend watching. After the success of Halloween 4 production began on Halloween 5 and it was rushed in order to be released the following year. As you can see by the title "The Revenge of Michael Myers" we know that Michael is back. Which completely takes away from the ending of Halloween 4 where they had been setting up Jamie to be the new killer. This movie seems to completely ignore that aspect. Why go through all the trouble of setting that up just to throw that idea away? What was the point of it? Anyways, at the beginning of 5 they recap the ending of Halloween 4. But now it is different. This time they drop a stick of dynamite where Michael fell down a mine shaft and he escapes. What the hell? Where was this in Halloween 4? This is bullshit. After escaping Michael ends up in some hermit guys home where he spends an entire year, wakes up and then kills the guy. So, Michael then decides to enact his revenge by starting to kill people. One of the first people he ends up killing early on is Jamie's sister Rachel. One of the few likable characters in Halloween 4. Her death was completely wasted in this movie. If you're going to kill her off it should have been saved for the end of the movie in place of the annoying Tina character. Having Rachel sacrifice herself for Jamie would have had a stronger emotional impact and made her death scene feel more meaningful considering the already established bond the two have with each other. Having her die early on takes away from it and just feels kind of half-assed. With Rachel out of the picture we end up getting stuck with a bunch of annoying characters. I can't stand these characters; they aren't likable and are only there to be victims for Michael Myers. I also hate the overabundance of jump scares and fake outs in this movie. They just go on and on and on over and over and over again that it devalues Michael's true presence within the movie. The mask that Michael wears in this movie is also bad. Probably the worst in the series along with the mask they used in part 4. Then finally we get the worst part of all. The ending. You see after Michael gets captured and put into jail. (Where they don't even bother to take his mask off)! A man in black approaches the jail cell. Now, this man had appeared throughout the movie along with this symbol of Thorn. (Something that is the focus of Halloween 6). Then once he makes his way into the jail cell, he opens fire on the police station killing everyone inside, Michael has escaped again, and now Jamie is left screaming making this the final time that Danielle Harris would play the character of Jamie Lloyd. What a bunch of bullshit. I hate cliffhanger endings like this. Unless you know for sure that you're getting a sequel. Then don't end your movie like this. Not to mention the film makers didn't even know who this man in black was. Why include this character if you don't know who this person is!? I can't stand the fact that this is how they ended the movie. It would have been fine if they ended it with Michael in the jail cell. The possibility of a sequel is still out there. But at least your movie has an ending. This isn't an ending to the story! 

Final Thoughts:
Halloween 5 is a bad movie. Just plain and simple, bad characters, poor jump scares, and a terrible ending. It's a rushed movie and it shows. Despite how good Danielle Harris and Donald Pleasance are in this movie even those two can't save it. I really hate the fact that 4 was so good and this one was so bad. What the hell happened? Why did the quality dip so much and why have that cliffhanger ending? Especially for a character that not even the writers knew who they were! Anyways, that is all I have to say for today.
