Chapter 2

"A what, now?" pulling the door closed, I step back into my house, collapsing into the soft, warm, lime green cushions of my armchair.

"Get out of my mind this instant. I can't think while knowing someone else is invading my mind, reading my thoughts. It creeps me out."

'If you insist.'

I was not prepared for what I next felt. Imagine nails being dragged across a chalkboard. Then imagine that chalkboard was the inside of your skull. It felt like my mind was being ripped in half.

Thankfully, it only lasted for a few short seconds. Which was good, because that was all I could take.

"I felt it too, in case you're wondering."

I jumped as I whirled around. Only to see... nothing. Was the air itself speaking to me? I shrugged. Given the craziness of this morning, I wouldn't doubt it. But why would the air be so interested in the Halflblood race?

"You do know what I am talking about, do you not?"

I take a step back, groping for my folder full of notes. "I believe I-" Instead of the smooth paper of my writing folder, my hand is gripping something rough. Something scaley. But most importantly, something entirely invisible.

"Hey! let go of my tail, you vile human!" Suddenly, my wrist twisted and I felt the something slip out of my hand. "You're going to have to try harder than that if you want to trap me."

So there is another creature around. And for some reason, it believes that I want to trap it. But I would never hurt a fly, much less a strange creature who, for some inexplicable reason, decided to barge into my house, take over my mind without my consent or approval, transform me into a monster, and then ask me about an integral part in the plot of a book series which I'm writing. This chain of actions makes little to no sense to me, which means I may be dealing with something which is out of its right mind, but I still have no malicious intent towards the creature.

Correction: I have no malicious intent towards the creature as long as it can say the same towards me. Which I believe would not be a true statement, perhaps due to the fact that my beautiful zebra striped sofa was just replaced with a hole in my navy blue walls, or maybe the three bloody gashes now running along my arm. I whip out my cell phone and hide behind a heavy bookshelf for cover.

"911. What is your emergency?"

"An unidentifiable creature broke into my house and is trying to kill me."

"Can you exit the house?"

"I do not believe so. I am currently hiding in order to make this call."

"Understood. We are sending help right now."

"Phew." I sighed with relief. Just then, my phone went flying out of my hand and into the air, where a-- "Is that a laser?" struck the charger port, disintegrating the device faster than I could blink. "Well, that looked dangerous. I should definitely avoid it."

The air seems to ripple, and I take that as a sign to duck, throwing myself to the floor as another beam of light strikes the wall where my head was moments before. I hear a grunt, and the floor right behind me vanishes as the bookcase slowly inches away from the wall.

Wall in front of me. Creature behind me. Wall beside me, and a bookshelf on the other side. Running is not an option. But thankfully, I have an idea. And that idea might just save my life.

As the air ripples again, I reach into my handbag. I know I keep a mirror in there somewhere.

I usually use it for emergency makeup fixes, but I suppose it could also be a useful line of defense against an unknown laser throwing creature. My hand closes around the handle not a moment too soon, and I bring it up to protect my face. I've only got one shot at this, so it had better work.

The laser shoots towards me... and bounces off the reflective surface of the mirror, flying back at the attacker. I hear a roar of pain followed closely by a loud thud, and then the air in front of me seems to fold back like a curtain, revealing something lying on the ground.

The figure is silvery, and covered in scales. Sharp teeth glimmer from a still open mouth. But one look at the shape of the head and I start moving, edging quickly over the hole and around the creature before heading into my office. Grabbing a file off the desk, I hurry back, tuning out everything, even the knock on the door, as I compare my descriptions to the creature in front of me. Ghostly silver scales? Check. Long, whiplike tail? Check. Sturdy, muscular body? Check.

The creature in front of me fit my description perfectly, down to the tear in his left ear and the missing talon on his back left claw. The powers matched up as well. The ghostly breath on the couch, then light bending to stay invisible, and the lasers. Come to think of it, that matched his personality as well, as did our discussion.

His eyes, (left eye emerald green, right eye ghostly silver,) blink open and my pulse quickens as he lunges at me.

"Spectrum-" Before I can say another word, I find myself falling, and the world fades to black.
