Chapter 1

I never should have opened the door. Just ignoring the knock would have been so much easier. So much safer. So much simpler. But I didn't think of that when I was turning the doorknob. Didn't think of that when I was pulling the wooden rectangle in front of me forward to look outside.

By the time I realized that my doorstep was seemingly empty however, it was too late. I tried to close the door, but my mind snapped before I could. It was like I lost all sense of myself. Lost contact with who I was. Forgot everything but vengeance.

"I must avenge my people!" Red clouds my eyes, heat fills my veins, and I can sense nothing else. Nothing that is, until a shriek reaches my ears.

"MONSTER!"

The sound surprises me. I was only a monster with some of the plot I put my characters through, and even then, I had reasons for every word I typed. Did that make me a monster? I sincerely doubted it. I knew practically  nothing of monsters. But I had a feeling they weren't human.

'Yet neither are you. You are me. And I am claiming revenge on the evil that hurt my people.'

'If I am you, then what are you?' This voice inside my head may be creepy, but it also seems to be my only way of getting answers.

'A monster. But one justified in what they are doing.'

'I WILL NOT BE A MONSTER!'

The voice fades for a minute, then it returns.

'But you are. You are because I made you to be one.'

'Well then stop making me be one!' It seems clear now. Something is using me, controlling me, making me be no more than a weapon in their hands. Their own personal monster.

'Yes. That's right. You are mine now.'

'I was not yours, and I never will be!'

'Technically not true, but yeah, good try.'

'Oh great... now the voice in my head knows sarcasm.'

Apparently, it didn't know how to respond, or it was busy with another human, allowing my senses to return.

Feeling something on my hands, I looked down. My fingernails were long, and clawlike. Water ran over my scaly hands. I recoiled in horror just in time to see my... tail? (It must have been. It couldn't be anything else,) sweep cleanly through my feet. I didn't feel a thing. Nor did I as I stepped away from the wall, pulling a wing out of it as I went.

I decide (rather stupidly) to punch a wall to see if I'm dreaming.

If I'm awake, I should feel something..

If I'm asleep, nothing.

Well I definitely feel it as my fist crashes right through the wall. I pull it back and see a hole. Through it, I see a mirror. In it, I look human.

But what am I?

I am Kailie Jones, and I was human. Now I'm not sure what I am.

------------------------------------------------------

The human is weak, and easy to control. She takes on my form. She sees through my eyes. She does not question my commands.

But then a voice breaks her.

"MONSTER!"

That's what she is right now. But she doubts it. Saying that no monsters are human. But she is wrong. Humans are monsters. And she is no longer human.

'No monsters are human' she thinks.

'And neither are you.'  I had to make myself known at some point. If she never knew what she was, she would be wary. She would resist next time I tried to take control.

'You are me. And I am taking revenge on the evil that hurt my people.'

She had to know the truth, had to accept it. We both had to trust each other if she was going to help me.

'If I am you, then what are you?'

She is curious. I'm not sure if this is a good thing, but I won't leave her without answers. She has a right to know what she now is.

'A monster. But one justified in what they are doing.' This answer is easy. It's what I've been telling myself since I started my quest for redemption.

'I WILL NOT BE A MONSTER!'

I'm sorry, lady but you don't have a choice in the matter. You are the only one who may be able to help me. But still. The conviction she put into that statement is a serious blow, and it takes me some time to gather the strength needed to respond.

'But you are. You are because I made you to be one.' Come to think of it, this sounds rude. Making someone be something they want to not be.

'Well then stop making me be one!'

She figured it out. The fact that there's someone controlling her, using her for some reason.

But I can't stop. If I leave her, in my current state, I would be unable to try at another time. Unable to avenge my people. I would be doomed to join the lost souls. Doomed to never truly be at rest.

'Yes. That's right. You are mine now.'

Mine to help me gain the help I need. The might to avenge my family. To finally be at rest.

'I was not yours, and I never will be!'

So she is strong. That is a double edged sword. On one talon, it makes it harder for me to control her. But on the other talon, once I get control, she will stop at nothing to do what I make her. Thankfully I just need to get her attention and get some answers, although some revenge would be nice while I'm at it.

Let's try to use the tactics of her people against her.

'Technically not true, but yeah, good try.'

'Oh great... now the voice in my head knows sarcasm.'

Oh great... now. I can't even begin to comprehend what she just meant.

Maybe the best recourse is to show her what I am.. what she now is.

'Please tell me this is all a dream.'

'This is all a dream. Wait a second, what is a dream anyways?

Not that it matters really. Since I finally managed to get your attention, you can help me now.'

'Fine. Let's just get this over with but make it quick.  Shadowmist Kingdom is releasing today, and my publisher will not approve if I'm late.'

'Good thing this won't take long. I just have a simple question.'

'Let's hear it then.'

'What is a halfblood, and where do I find one?'
