Chapter 5

I sat nervously in my hotel, waiting for the news of whether Tony had succeeded or not. I was starting to regret picking a 12-year-old. What was I thinking?! This mission was way too dangerous for a 12-year-old! I sighed to myself, starting to pace. There was a knock on the door and I ran over and answered.

There stood Tony, grinning and holding a perfectly cut ruby the size of a baseball. It was in a nice diamond shape with Noah's Half carved symmetrically in one of the smooth surfaces.

"I did it, Carrie! There were lots of lasers and it was super fun to dodge through them!" Tony gushed, holding the ruby out to me.

"Great job, Tony! I really appreciate it. Would you like some money or...?" I inquired, taking the ruby,

"No, thank you! Have fun with the ruby!"

"You're welcome."

I watched Tony sprint down the hotel corridor before shutting the door and sitting on the bed. I turned the ruby over in my hands, admiring it from different angles. It was a particular red colour, it was slightly transparent and it shined in the little sunlight that leaked through the window.

I smiled, stood up and carefully set it on the counter, quite happy with myself. Needs more experience, huh? I thought smugly as I remembered what Kaleb said, It was like stealing candy from a baby!

My phone dinged as I got a new email. I pulled it up and read it.

Dear Carrie Philips,

I know you have the ruby. I also know where you are. Watch your back...

-D

Before what I was reading could truly sink in, I heard the squeak of the window opening behind me. I whirled around, my phone hitting the ground with a clatter. A man with a creepy bunny mask was climbing through the hotel window, holding a Wharncliffe knife.

I immediately went into a defensive stance, mentally planning how I was going to knock his knife out of his hand. He walked towards me, adjusting his knife. He raised it above his head and as soon as he was close enough, I grabbed his wrist, kicked him in the back of his calf and pinned his arm behind his back, forcing him against a wall. He kicked me in the shin with his heel which made me mad, so I slammed his head into the wall. He went limp so I let go and backed away.

Freaking finally. I thought as I finished tying the man to a chair. He'll be waking up any minute now... The man slowly opened his eyes and looked around in confusion for a moment. I reached out and snatched off his mask to see... actually, I don't know who it was. He was bald and had a black moustache. He glared at me and started to struggle.

I decided to interrogate him, "Who are you and what do you want?"

"As if I'm going to tell you who I am. I'm here for the ruby, though."

"Well, you're not getting it, and I'm calling the police."

"If you call them, they'll know you stole the ruby." He replied smugly,

"Nevermind, I'll just leave you in here for the hotel staff to find, I have a flight to catch." I retorted, picking up the ruby and throwing my backpack strap over my shoulder. He suddenly looked panicked, "Wait- No-"

I didn't hear the rest of his sentence as I had shut the door behind me. Stupid jerk. I thought as I began my descent down the stairs. I stopped by the front desk, took out a 100 dollar bill, slammed it on the desk making the lady flinch and walked out. I could not get wait to get out of here, that man had made me hate this place more than I already did.

I walked down the empty street over to the front gates and pushed them open, their creaking echoing. I walked down the dirt path, listening to the rustle of leaves. After a bit I had made it out of the forest onto some asphalt. I was in the middle of nowhere. I did not plan this out well.

I managed to hitchhike my way to the airport and catch a flight out. After another 9 hour flight, I was back in England, in a cab, on my way home. I Pulled the ruby out of my bag and smiled at it, "Kaleb is going to be so envious..." I muttered, turning it over in my hands. The driver glanced at me in the review mirror. We pulled up to my house and the driver looked at me, "That'll be 29.76, miss." I pulled out my wallet and handed him 30 pounds, "Keep the change," and got out. He drove off and I approached the door. Before I could even try to knock, my brother tore open the door.

He inquired anxiously, "So, how'd it go?"

I frowned, "Well..." I smiled as his face fell, "I got it!"

"Oh my god, don't scare me like that! You got the ruby?"

"Yep!" I pulled out of my bag again and held it out to him

"Wow, it has Noah's Half on it. Guess that means its the real one." Kaleb commented, taking it and admiring it. He ran inside, leaving the door wide open. Irresponsible I rolled my eyes and went inside, shutting the door behind me. I walked into the living room and flinched when my Dad appeared out of nowhere.

"You did it! You really did it!" He cried, embracing me, "It wasn't even that hard..." I muttered, gently pushing him away. Dad grinned, "This call for a celebration! Lets put the ruby in its casing." He ran towards the basement and I quickly followed, wondering what the heck this casing could be.

There in the basement was a pedestal with a plastic-looking container, "The casing is made out of Indestructibo,"

"Indestruct-what-now?"

"It's an indestructible material, its only weakness is itself. You'd have to get a sharp piece of Indestructibo to cut the Indestructibo," Dad explained, taking the ruby from my brother, who was standing near the case. "Enjoy this moment, children, because we're making History,"

Dad carefully set the ruby in the case and shut the lid. The ruby gleamed unnaturally, Noah's Half being emphasized. I ran my fingers across the Industructibo, it was smooth and definitely not plastic. Dad pat my head fondly,

"You did a great job, Carrie. Your mother and I are very proud of you,"

Kaleb watched, looking quite jealous. I smirked at him then look at Dad, "Thank you."

"Lets eat some dinner, eh? Your mum is making fish and chips."

"Sounds good!" I responded, climbing the stairs.

And that was only the start of what would come, I would soon take on many more dangerous missions. Dad said I was saving the world, though it often didn't feel like that. But I guess I really was. What can I say? I'm a Philips.
