Chapter 2

"You're telling me, all this supernatural talk was real?" I inquired, as my dad informed me on various mythical creatures,

"Yes, I'm telling you." My dad said jokingly,

"What kind of name is 'Skin Walker'?" I asked, frowning, "Doesn't sound real."

"I promise I'm telling the truth, Hunny." He ruffled my hair, "But we'll talk more on Mythical creatures later, for now, there's something important that your mum and I thought would be a good task for you..."

"Task?" I questioned, "What kind of task?" My dad smiled,

"A dangerous one. Now that I think about it, you might not be up for it..."

"Of course I'm up for it!" I shouted, springing to my feet, "If you're sure," Dad said teasingly, "You see, there's this ruby that once belonged to your great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather," I sat back down, "That's a lot of 'great's...".

"It is. Now this ruby, it's powerful. It is the sole reason for a lot of the paranormal thing on earth. Its kept in a highly protected bank but someone has threatened to take it and destroy it." Dad explained, watching my expression carefully.

"And what would happen if it was destroyed?" I asked, combing my fingers through my hair. Does Dad expect me to believe this?!

Dad's expression got really serious all of a sudden, "It would be the end of the world,". I raised an eyebrow at him, pushing some of my blonde hair over my shoulder,

"End of the world? Why?"

"Like I said, its the sole purpose for many of the supernatural things in this world. If it were to be destroyed, all of those creatures would die. That would throw everything off balance thus bringing the end of the world." He explained grimly.

"You... You can't be serious."

"I'm very serious. Now, we're going to have you come up with a way to get the ruby out of that bank. The bank already denied our request, so you'll have to find a different way..."

"You mean like stealing?!" I exclaimed angrily, standing up, "What the heck, Dad! I'm not going to steal that ruby!"

"I never said you had to steal it, you could get someone else to do it..." Dad said, smiling nervously.

"No... Just, no! That's wrong! I'm not going to do that!" I shouted,

"Carrie, you're saving the world!" Dad responded, also standing up, "Sometimes you have to break the law to save the law!"

"That makes no sense, Dad! You're crazy!" I harshly remarked, turning around and walking out of the living room.

My brother, Kaleb, was looking through the cupboard in the kitchen when I walked in. He looked up at me, "Woah, Care, what's up?"

"Mum and Dad are insane, that's what's up!" I declared, sitting down at the dining table, "Just calm down, patience is key, especially with them." Kaleb explained.

I sighed angrily, "I know, its just that it's hard to be patient with them when they keep throwing all this crazy crap at me. I don't know why they expect me to believe this..." I muttered the last part. Kaleb walked over and sat down by me with a bag of chips,

"Oh, that stuff they're telling you, its real." He stated nonchalantly, eating his chips.

"Really?" I asked, leaning forward a bit, "So they're not messing with me?"

"Nope, its real. I've seen some of it for myself. If they were talking to you about that, they must've had a mission for you, right?" Kaleb responded,

"Yeah, wanted me to get some ruby..."

Kaleb almost choked on his chips, "The ruby?! They gave you that for your first mission?!" I raised an eyebrow and drummed my fingers on the table,

"Yes..."

"But that... that should be taken care of by a more experienced person...!" Kaleb sputtered.

"Ha, jealous Mum and Dad chose me and not you?" I smirked, standing up, "Well, I don't want to do it, so go ahead." I walked out of the kitchen and up to my room. I sat down on my bed with one of my favourite novels: "The Unknown Shadows". I had just opened to my bookmarked page when there was a knock on my door.

I internally sighed, stood up and opened the door. To my surprise, it was my Aunt Hannah. "Aunt Hannah? What are you doing here?" I asked, very confused,

"Your mother called me, saying you weren't cooperating... She wanted me to try and convince you to get the ruby," Hannah answered.

That's the good thing about my Aunt Hannah, she's always straight forward and puts her intentions out there. No lying, no nothing.

"Well, tell them I'm not doing it." I tried to shut the door but Hannah stopped it with her hand, "I think you should do it, it's a good opportunity." Hannah explained calmly. I raised an eyebrow and stepped aside to let her in. She walked in and sat on my bed, patting the spot next to her. I rolled my eyes, shut the door, and sat by her.

"Now, I know it seems crazy, but everything your parents say is true. They don't want your brother to get the ruby because he's a bit... reckless. That's why they want you to do it." Hannah concluded,

"Well, sucks for them."

"At least think about it. It'll be an adventure and you might regret not going." Hannah stood up and walked towards the door.

"Fine, I'll think about it..." I muttered. Hannah left my room, shutting the door behind her. I laid back on my bed and stared at the ceiling.
