Chapter Twelve

Just when Renata believed that the night had already come to a perfect end with the two of them sharing in several dances after having a private dinner, she soon discovered that the night was still not over. As she sat beside James in the booth, sharing in some dessert of ice cream with plenty of topics, she watched as James pulled out a mirror from the pocket of his invisibility cloak.
"Do you need to freshen up a bit?" she asked, half joking, half confused as to why he was carrying around a mirror. With a laugh, James decided to let the mirror itself answer her question as he turned it to face her. She glanced at her reflection for a couple of seconds, before she watched as the glass seemed to be morphing before her very eyes and then shortly after, Sirius appeared. Suddenly, she jumped, nearly dropping the mirror from her hand as she certainly didn't expect him to appear and it seemed that James had anticipated her reaction as he swiftly caught the mirror before it fell.
He held it up and greeted Sirius with a smile while Renata leaned over to see the interaction between the two.
"I'm going to hope that she was just surprised by the magic behind this mirror and that she wasn't that frightened of my face," Sirius' voice echoed into the restaurant, " anyways, did she say yes?"
James' chest puffed out proudly, sitting a little straighter and lifting his chin up high. "She said sì!"
"See what?"
Clapping her hand over her face quietly, Renata could definitely see why James and Sirius definitely considered themselves to be brothers, sometimes, they were too much like one another. But it brought a smile to Renata's face as she stifled a laugh before taking the mirror gently from James' hand. Holding up her left hand, she showed Sirius that she was indeed wearing the ring, to give him his answer.
"I said yes," she said, only to be drowned out seconds later as Sirius let out a high-pitch scream of joy. His usual suave demeanour diminished before their very eyes as he became a sobbing, blubbery mess in such a short period of time. And while Sirius' dramatics sometimes rubbed off on other people he was around, he was proving right then in that very moment as to why he was still the reigning drama queen.
But at the same time, it was incredibly flattering to see how happy Sirius was over the news and after he fanned the tears away with the use of his free hand, he demanded that they get back to the Potter Cottage in order for all of them to celebrate the engagement. At most, Renata was simply anticipating it being Sirius and her brother back at the cottage, but one thing she had come to learn as she was on her way to becoming a Potter, was that they were always full of their surprises.
They left Putney's behind after cleaning everything up to leave the restaurant as it originally was and after, hand in hand, they departed from the place to make their way home. James joked around that he wouldn't be surprised if Sirius had a line of wedding gowns lined up for Renata when she walked through the door as he had been the most eager and enthusiastic when it came to James announcing that he planned on asking her to marry him. It left her wondering just how long James had been planning it and how long Sirius and everyone else had known that were involved in the scavenger hunt.
Considering how much thought had gone into it, she suspected that it had taken some time to plan it all out and if Sirius was in on it from the beginning, she had to applaud his ability for keeping quiet about the matter for as long as he did. Walking up the steps of the Potter Cottage, it all seemed relatively quiet if Renata was being honest with herself and that left her slightly nervous. Since Sirius couldn't even keep himself inside back on Renata's and James' first date when they had been standing outside of the old flat, how was he containing his excitement now?
Unless he had passed out from all the excitement, which didn't leave her feeling comfortable as her thoughts automatically went to Harry being left unsupervised. She hurried up the rest of the steps, pulling James along with her in a strong manner that nearly brought the man to trip. He figured that she was so excited to talk to Sirius, but in reality, she was trying to make sure that Harry was alright due to the lack of noise coming from the other side of the door. However, as soon as she opened the door, James' smiled and released her hand, watching as she slowly stepped inside with a look of pure awe on her face.
Rather than having a surprise party where everyone jumped out at her and yelled, James had arranged for something else. He knew that Renata still wasn't comfortable with people jumping out of her from hiding, seeing as Sirius had been her first victim with a punch to the face. So instead, when Renata walked inside, she found everyone seated around the home, all of them looking at her with smiles, including Harry, who was in Sirius' arms.
"Mummy! Daddy!" Harry greeted them before he started clapping his hands together. "It's a surprise!"
He started to squirm in Sirius' arms, a clear sign that he wanted to be placed down, and as soon as his feet touched the flooring, he was on the move. Renata was busy taking in the fact that everyone had shown up, including the Weasley family, the Longbottoms, Adelmo, Remus and Huxley, Rubeus Hagrid, and even some people from the markets had apparently been invited.
Meanwhile, Harry had raced over and tackled James' legs, although hitting something else in the process that brought James to hunch over in pain. He attempted to keep the smile on his face as he grimaced slightly through the pain, while Harry beamed up at him, unaware that he had knocked his father in the family jewels.
"Did Mummy say yes?" Harry asked him in a low whisper, not really registering the teary gaze in his father's eyes.
"Yes, Harry," James breathed, " Mummy did say yes, why don't you go look at the ring?"
Abandoning James in his painful state, Harry ran right over to Renata, crashing into her leg bringing Renata to lower herself to his eye level.
"Mummy, can I see the ring?"
Of course, Harry wasn't the only one that wanted to see it as everyone started moving around to approach the couple to offer their congratulations. However, Harry obviously had first dibs at his parents as he held Renata's left hand in both of his and observed the ring. Little did Renata know that the engagement meant more to Harry than anyone else. He didn't really understand the terms of an engagement or marriage, but he figured that Renata saying yes that meant she was going to be his mother forever.
At least, that was how James had tried to describe it to him when Harry became curious as to what James had been up to in the recent weeks.
Although even without the ring or the engagement, Renata would always commit to the idea of being a mother towards Harry. There was no doubt about that but becoming James' wife had its perks too, she would definitely agree to that. It was kind of an honour to be close to taking the Potter name as the Abate name had really only brought her grief over the course of time. She and Adelmo had joked that perhaps one day she would be a Potter and he would become a Black, so they never had to bother hearing the Abate surname ever again.
And it definitely seemed like they were on their way of doing that.
Harry continued to look over the ring as if he was examining it to make sure that it was utter perfection in his eyes and once he was satisfied he looked up at his mother before hugging her. His actions brought about his friends to join in and do the same as Neville ran over and tackled Renata's side, catching her off balance. She ended up falling over to the floor where Ron and Huxley joined in on the fun of hugging her while she was down.
But the little ones weren't to have all the fun as Fred and George called out for a dogpile to form, leaving them to join in on the act. Of course, Percy wanted nothing to do with that, fearful that his glasses would get knocked off his face during all the rough-housing but Fred didn't give him much of a choice as he grabbed his older brother and yanked him along. And no dogpile was ever complete without actual dogs getting in on it.
Everyone felt the impact of added weight and looked up to see that Sirius was lying on top of all of them in his dog form, wagging his tail and while he had them distracted, Enzo ran over and started licking the side of Renata's face.
In celebration of the engagement, Renata made her rounds so that everyone could see the ring, and between Molly, Hagrid, and Adelmo hugging her, she felt like a tube of toothpaste with having the life squeezed out of her. Molly was in tears by the end of the hug, claiming that she was so happy for the couple and if Renata needed any help with wedding plans that she was available and ready to help. Hagrid had only met her for a brief time while they had been in Diagon Alley earlier, but he didn't need to know her long to love her. His hug had lifted Renata off her feet, something she found to be both terrifying and impressive.
But Adelmo's hug almost made Renata tear up herself because they didn't need to say anything to each other. There was such a happiness exchanged between the two of them as they were happy for how life was playing out for one another. Adelmo had found people that would support him for his way of life without facing the judgement that he had experienced for so long. And Renata had found a place where she felt like she belonged, she had found a family, a job as a mother, a career of being a restaurant owner, and a life as a Potter.
While she mingled with everyone, it was Remus that approached James, looking actually quite teary-eyed himself.
"Don't you start crying, Moony," James warned him, " you know how it goes. If you start then well...we all start. This is a happy occasion, no crying."
"There are such things as happy tears, James," Remus said with a shake of his head, " besides, I'm not going to cry. I just wanted to tell you that I'm really happy for you and Renata. I'm happy because you both seem so happy and so does Harry. And that makes me happy, happiest I've felt in a long time. Between you finding Renata, Sirius finding Adelmo, and me finding Huxley, I guess it all feels surreal, you know. I'll admit the war put me...or I guess all of us, in a bad place and yet, something good came out of it for all of us. I think this just marks a new beginning for all of us."
"I agree, Moony, it's good to see that while the war broke us, we didn't remain broken," James replied, "and I'm glad we could all just move on with our lives and heal."
"Daddy?" Huxley's voice interrupted the two men, bringing them to peer down as he was tugging on the bottom of Remus' shirt to get his attention. "I'm hungry-"
And as if Molly had super hearing from across the room, her eyes locked on the child that claimed to be hungry. Within seconds, she was preparing a plate as no child would ever go hungry in her presence if she had something to say about it. Remus was just about to walk over and see if he could fix up something for Huxley out of the food that was left out, but before they could even turn around, Molly was holding out a plate.
The night carried on with dancing, laughter stories told from James' childhood that rendered him beet red in the face numerous times, and a few embarrassing tales from Renata's childhood that Adelmo told. The adults shared in a few drinks while the children around them played all throughout the cottage. But eventually, everyone agreed that it was time to wrap up the party and head to their respective homes for some rest. However, when it came to the little ones, they had clocked out of the party long before everyone else.
Renata had noticed how quite the "little four" were and ended up going on the search to locate where all of them were. In Harry's room, Huxley had tucked himself into Harry's bed, covered in blankets and looking quite peaceful. Harry, on the other hand, had crashed on the floor, his toys still being loosely held between his fingers by the base of his bed. Lifting him up carefully so that she didn't wake him, she placed him into the bed with Huxley, tucking him in before going to find the others.
Neville wasn't far off as he apparently had to use the toilet at one point and ended up falling asleep while sitting there. With a quiet chuckle, Renata cleaned Neville up as he opened his eyes just barely with a sleepy expression. He attempted to help her by moving around but he was too weak to really do anything. Once he was cleaned up, she carried him to Harry's room to place him into bed with the other two. And last, but certainly not least, she needed to find Ron.
His brothers had all fallen asleep on the sofa downstairs but Ron wasn't tucked in between them, instead, he had found an armchair to pass out in. However, the way he was laying in it made Renata uncomfortable just looking at him. Carefully lifting him up as well, she made her way to have him join the other three and once all four of them were tucked away in Harry's bed, they all seemed to snuggle up.
She sat on the edge of the bed, watching as Harry wrapped his arms around Huxley, who had his hand reaching out and touching the top of Neville's head. Ron had his arm over Neville, his hand gripping Harry's shirt light while Neville had both arms laying over Ron's and Harry's faces. It looked incredibly uncomfortable but once they settled into their positions none of them moved.
"Here they are," Molly's voice rang into the room as she led Augusta and Remus into the room to collect their children, " goodness, they certainly have found their way of sleeping. All knotted up like that, it can't be comfortable."
"How are we going to get them without waking them up?" Augusta questioned, but Renata shook her head.
"Why don't you just leave them here for the night," she suggested, " they all already tucked in and comfortable. Huxley, Neville, and Ron are more than welcomed to spend the night."
"But it's your engagement night," Molly insisted, " we were going to offer to take Harry to the Burrow so that you and James could have the rest of the night to yourselves. You don't want to be managing these four for the night, do you?"
"I'd love to have them," Renata said with a shrug, " they're always welcomed here and I'm sure they'll sleep through the night. It won't be a problem, I promise."
With the agreement to leave the boys behind, the adults left the bedroom, allowing them to continue sleeping. Renata closed the door behind her as she walked out and made her way downstairs to say goodbye to everyone and thank them for coming. Remus, Sirius, and Adelmo were the last to leave, but eventually, they left to return to their respective homes leaving Renata and James alone in the living room.
James made his way over, plopping on the sofa and patting the spot next to him with an encouraging smile, bringing Renata to walk over and sit down beside him snuggling into his side. She let out a tired yawn as it had been an exciting and eventful day but also quite exhausting now that she was thinking about it.
"So," James began, lifting up her hand in his, " we're engaged, has it settled in yet?"
"It settled in as soon as you put the ring on my finger," she told him, "has it settled in for you?"
"Settled in when you said yes."
"James, I said sì. We really need to work on your Italian, Harry has you beat right now."
"Alright, well, let's start now," he said turning his body to face her, " how do you say 'I love you' in Italian."
"Ti amo."
"Right back at you, Ren."
"James!"
