You and Akaashi are best friend. You will help him when he is down and vice verse. You're happy when he is happy and you're sad when he is sad. He is someone you can depend on with whatever problem you have and because of this, your heart was also taken by him. You like his consideration but one thing that you knew, he is like that with everyone. You're just a friend in his eyes, nothing more than that. You knew it when he shows you his phone gallery.

"Akaashi, what are you doing?" you asked him before sitting beside him. He smiled at you.
"I am looking at this" he showed you his phone.
"Isn't that the picture of Hana?" you asked him.
"Yes, I think I have a crush on her" his reply makes your heart drop.
"You...have a crush on Hana?" he nodded.

"She is your friend, right? Can you introduce me to her?" you control your expression and smile at him.
"Sure, how about tomorrow?" he took your hand and smile.
"Thank you, (y/n). I owe you for this." you bit your lip, to make sure you don't tears up right now.

Ringggg~

"Time to go now. The practice is waiting" you nodded but you keep sitting there.
"Aren't you coming with me?" Akaashi asked.
"Oh, I have something to do first. I will come later" you smiled at him and he nodded before leaving you alone.

As soon as Akaashi is not in your view, a little laugh coming out from your mouth. You remember your conversation with Bokuto last year.

"(y/n), you like Akaashi, right?" you looked at Bokuto with your wide eyes.
"H-How did you know?" Bokuto smile at you.
"I can see how your eyes are when you look at him" you blinked your eyes.
"How did I look?"

"Someone in love?" Bokuto laughed but that makes you blushed so hard.
"Bokuto-san, can you please keep this as a secret? I don't want to ruin my friendship with Akaashi"
"(y/n), sometimes we have to take a step forward to achieve what we want or we will regret it later" Bokuto patted your shoulder and leave you alone.

"Bokuto-san, it looks like I l have to take a step backwards now" your eyes can't hold your tears anymore. You let yourself crying for a while and then you took a deep breath before wiping your tears. A smile appeared on your face and you walked to the gym.
"I will be happy if he is" you convinced yourself and when you arrived at the gym, you saw Akaashi's standing in front of it.

"Why are you standing here?" you asked him.
"I am waiting for you, of course."
"Why?" You wished he will stop this part of him.
"Habit?" you chuckled.
"You have to stop this habit if you want Hana to like you. She is easy to get jealous even though I am just a friend to you" you smiled at him before walked past him.

"We are best friend though" he walked to you and said it.
"Boy" you pointed at him. "Girl" then you pointed at yourself.
"What do you think of it?" you asked him and that makes him speechless. You patted his shoulder before walking to the coach and start your duty as the manager of the team.

That night you got a lot to think especially about Akaashi and Hana.

"Hana is a pretty girl. She's also kind and lovely. Everyone like her. Compare to me, we're totally far apart. Of course, Akaashi will like a girl like her" you sighed and closed your eyes.

"(y/n)! Don't give up! Why did you let yourself down like this?!"
"Fight for your love!"
"You knew Akaashi better than anyone. You should be the one with him!"

The voices of your heart started to speak up.

~ The next day ~

"Hana, do you know Akaashi?" you asked your friend, Hana aka Akaashi's crush.
"Yes, the volleyball team's setter, right?" you nodded.
"He asked me if he can be your friend" she surprised but then she smiled.
"Of course. Why not?" she nodded.
"So, do you want to have lunch with me and him?" she nodded.
"Good then. See you at lunchtime"

You brought her with you to lunch together with Akaashi. You introduced them and they seem to click with each other and that makes you feel really miserable.

Since that day, you can see how close they become. Instead of sticking with them, you let them be by themselves and you took this chance to study in the library. You make yourself busy with it to forget about your feelings. When it's time for the club's practice, you acted like usual and no one can see anything different from you but one person saw it. Akaashi saw and feel how distance you are after you introduced him with Hana.

"(y/n), can we talk for a second?" you surprised when you feel someone grabbed your hand when you're arranging the bottles.
"Akaashi?" he brought you to the outside of the gym and then looked at you right into your eyes. It does make your heart races.
"Why are you distancing yourself from me? Where are you in the lunchtime? Why did you not coming to eat with me anymore?" you're speechless for a while when you heard his question. You can't believe he saw how different you are.

"I am not distancing myself from you. I am studying at the library during lunchtime because you know that I dream to further my study in overseas, right? I have to double my effort if I want to make it true." You explained to him, but not everything is the truth. You indeed want to study overseas though and he knew it. You used that reason to explain to him hoping that he will buy it.

"Don't push yourself too hard." you nodded and smile, knowing that he bought it.
"Come on, I gave you time to be alone with Hana. Don't let it go" you punched his shoulder lightly and he smiled.
"Yeah, thank you, (y/n). I really owed you. I think I want to confess to her before graduation. What do you think?" your eyes widen.
"O-Oh. I think it's good. Who doesn't like you anyway? Good luck" you cheer for him on the outside but you're already crying inside of you.

"Thank you, (y/n). You're really a good person" you laughed a little, laughed at yourself who is too coward to take a step forward and ended up losing the most important person.

~ The day before graduation ~

A few weeks after you try your luck taking an admission test for (any university you want but not in Japan), you got an email telling you that you got admitted to the university. (I don't know if it is possible before you graduate, but let just think it is possible). You're happy with it and your family is really proud of you. You have to leave Japan in less than a month, so you have a lot to prepare for you to stay overseas.

You want to tell Akaashi this good news and when you want to call him, you received a call from him instead. You immediately accept it.

"Hello, Akaashi" you happily answered him.
"Hello, (y/n). I want to tell you something"
"Oh, I want to tell you something too but, you can tell yours first"
"I want to ask Hana out and confess to her tonight." your smile on your face disappear.
"Oh, you told me before. Good luck!"

"Are you okay, (y/n)?" you're surprised when he asked that. He must hear how different your tone are.
"Yeah, I am fine"
"Anyway, what do you want to tell me?"
"I will tell you tomorrow. Good luck for today, okay? Bye," you hung up your phone before he can answer you. You don't think you can handle it anymore because as soon as you hung up, your eyes are blurred with your tears.

~ The next day ~

After graduation ceremony is finished, your family comes to you and congratulate you. After that, you went to see your friends and the volleyball team members. You don't see either Hana or Akaashi but you choose to just let it be. It will be better if you don't see them anyway because you think you will cry on the spot if you saw them smiling while holding hand right now.

But then someone tapped your shoulder and when you turned around, you saw Akaashi.
"Akaashi?" he looks a bit sad in your eyes but you thought that maybe because we're graduated.
"Congratulations"
"You too." you smiled at him. Then you remembered about your news yesterday.
"Akaashi, actually I want to tell you something" he nodded.
"I got an offer to (u/n). I got into my dream university!" you smile happily at him but he looks totally shocked.
"Y-You mean that you will leave Japan?"
"Of course. The university is not in Japan anyway" you laughed because of his question.

"You will leave me?" he asked.
"What do you mean by that? You have Hana with you, right? You want me to be with you too?" you don't know why but you got angry with his question.
"That's not what I mean and Hana and I is no-"
"Akaashi, I am sorry" you cut him out and walking away from him, leaving him alone.

Akaashi's pov

"(y/n), she rejected me. She like someone else. She saw me just as a friend"

That's what I want to say to her but now she's not with me anymore. Yesterday, Hana opened my eyes and heart how important (y/n) is in my life. She makes me realized that (y/n) was giving a huge impact in my life and I regretted that I don't see it. I am taking her existence in my life for granted and now I am losing her.

~ Several years later ~

I totally lose contact with (y/n) right after the graduation day. I try to call her but I don't receive any reply. I tried to go to her house but, she's busy with her preparation to go to overseas. In the end, we didn't contact each other anymore.

"Akaashi!" I turned to my side to see Bokuto-san.
"Bokuto-san" I nodded at him and he patted my shoulder.
"Do you know that I saw (y/n), yesterday?" my eyes widen.
"She's back to Japan?" he nodded.
"You didn't know?" I shook my head.
"We already lose contact with each other. You knew it"

"Ah, I forget. You know, I remember the day I gave her the advice to confess to you. She looks really cute that time but now she looks sophisticated and I can't take my eyes on her. Our baby girl is grown up now" he placed his hand on his heart but I realised something.
"Wait, (y/n) likes me?"
"You didn't know?" Bokuto asked me back and then he slapped his forehead.
"Forget it then! I thought she already confessed to you"

She like me? That's why she acted like that when I confessed my feelings about Hana. How foolish of me...

"Oh, by the way, I asked her to come to our volleyball club reunion today and she said she will come" Bokuto added and that makes me smile.
"Thank you, Bokuto-san"

I will take this chance.

~ Reunion time ~

I wait for (y/n) to come and when I saw the person herself, I am stunned. She's really become a beauty and I can't take my eyes off her. I know not only me, but every person in this place have eyes on her.

"Guys, don't look at me like that! You guys make me embarrassed!" she said to us and that makes everyone back to reality.
"(y/n), how did you become this gorgeous, huh?" Yukie asked her but she just laughed at it.
"Stop embarrassed me, Yukie-san"

During our reunion, I can't take my eyes off her and when she said she has to leave, I volunteer to walk her out. She did refuse but I still go with her.

"It's been a long time, (y/n)" I said to her and she nodded.
"How are you? Are you still with Hana?" she asked me.
"I am fine and about that... She rejected me when I confessed to her that day. I want to tell you that but, well you know"
"Then, you're single now?" I nodded.

"I am waiting for you. I realized my feelings toward you after I lose you" I confessed to her while not looking at her. When I turn to look at her, I saw her crying.
"(y/n)! Why are you crying?" she is crying but then she smiles at me.
"Are you really serious about that? You're not joking, right?"
"Is my face looks like I am joking right now?" she shook her head.

"(y/n), I love you. I really love you. Please don't leave me again" right after I confessed, she took a step forward and hugged me.
"I love you too, Akaashi" I smiled and hugged her back.

I will treasure you for my whole life.

Alternate ending

"It's been a long time, (y/n)" I said to her and she nodded.
"How are you? Are you still with Hana?" she asked me.
"I am fine and about that... She rejected me when I confessed to her that day. I want to tell you that but, well you know"
"Then, you're single now?" I nodded.

"I am wait-"

"Honey!" I saw a guy walking towards us and questioning on who he called 'Honey' is but when I saw a big smile coming from (y/n), I now know that I am too late. He walks to her and kissed her on her lips.
"I am coming to get you." she nodded while smiling.
"Thank you, I was about to call you" they look like a great couple.
"Oh, by the way, this is my friend, Akaashi Keiji and this is my husband, Nakamura Kaname. We met during my study in overseas" I nodded and smiled at her.

"Congratulations. I didn't know that you're married now."
"We just make a small reception," she said.
"Well, then goodbye, Akaashi. It's nice to see you again" I nodded and look at her while she's walking away with her husband.

After she's gone, I crouched down and my tears going down.

I am really too late...
