3RD PERSON POV

kindergarten

A boy is seen sitting alone at the playground while the other kids his age were playing with each other. This boy is named Akaashi Keiji.

Akaashi is a quiet boy, only speaks when necessary or spoken to. And due to this, he wasn't able to fit in with the other kids.

He would always sit under a tree and doodle some things into the dirt with a stick he found.

"Hey, what are you doing alone?" someone said. Akaashi looked at who was talking and saw someone with (h/c) hair and (e/c) eyes.

"... I don't have any friends.." he replied before continuing to doodle into the dirt. He thought the girl would leave after he answered, but instead she took a seat next to him.

"I can be your friend! My name is (Y/n)! What's yours?" she asked. "..Keiji.."

elementary school

"Keiji! Let's eat lunch together!" (Y/n) asked her best friend during break time. Akaashi nodded before taking out his bento.

Meanwhile (Y/n) took a nearby empty seat and placed it beside Akaashi's table and then placing her own bento on it.

When they opened their bentoes, (Y/n) gasped. "You have octopus sausages?!" she exclaimed.

Akaashi just nodded. "Do you want some?" he asked. He had gotten less quiet once he started to hang around (Y/n) often.

(Y/n)'s eyes sparkled when she was offered the food and nodded enthusiasthically and Akaashi then placed some octopus sausages into her bento.

"Here's some egg rolls in exchange!" (Y/n) exclaimed as she traded her food with him.

middle school

"(Y/n), do you want to accompany me to the convenience store?" Akaashi asked as he was packing his bag. It was already the end of school for the day and Akaashi asked (Y/n) if she wanted to tag along.

"Ah, sorry Keiji, but I have somewhere to go." (Y/n) said before brisk walking out of the classroom.

Akaashi just stared at your form as it left. 'I wonder what happened?' he thought.

==A / F E W / D A Y S / L A T E R==

Akaashi was packing his bag when he saw (Y/n) heading out of the class without him.

"(Y/n), are you not going to watch me play today?" he asked because usually his childhood best friend would stay and watch him play during training, and today was a more important training because it was a practice match against another neighbourhood school.

(Y/n) stopped in her tracks and looked back at Akaashi with a guilty look. "I'm sorry, Keiji.. But I have to go somewhere before heading home.." she said before bowing slightly and almost running her way out of school.

Akaashi just stared at his friend with a saddened look before continuing to pack his bag.

Ever since the first incident of (Y/n) "ignoring" Akaashi, they started to grow distant. It's not that (Y/n) wanted to, but it's because her family is just falling apart and she's doing her best to keep as much as she can stay together.

Their father found out that his wife has been cheating on him with someone else for a while now and he despised her ever since. They've also started arguing at any chance they get.

They don't involve their children, thankfully, but no child should ever witness this.

This went on for a few days, then weeks, then months, and it dragged out until the 1st year of high school.

During the constant quarrel in the (L/n) household, 2 of (Y/n)'s older sisters moved out.

When her parents finally signed the divorce papers, her father took (B/n) with him as they moved out to another part of Tokyo.

Now it's just (Y/n), her other older sister, and their mother.

Her mother's cheating relationship didn't last that long afterwards and they broke up a few weeks before the divorce, but she ended up finding a new boyfriend anyways, and neither of the two children liked him. They've met him once, and never again.

But he doesn't live with them anyways so that's a win. Their mother also goes out often and leaves them alone, I guess that's another win for them because they don't have to deal with her troublesome self.

But because of their mom becoming more irresponsible as the years go by, (Y/n) and her sister had to find jobs and become the new breadwinner of the remaining family.

In addition to all of this, (Y/n) and her childhood best friend, Akaashi, stopped talking to each other. (Y/n) was focusing on her studies and her job while Akaashi was focused on his studies too plus volleyball.

Coincidentally, both of them are still attending the same school, Fukurodani Academy.

It was going well, if you could say that, until (Y/n)'s pent up anger was finally at its limit as she confronted her mother who was for once at home. She was tired from her job and she comes back just to see her mother relaxing on the living room sofa while scrolling through her phone as if they weren't struggling with money and as if she wasn't gone for almost 2 weeks.

She went to where her mother was and just said, "Why are you here?" with a monotonous voice.

Her mother was confused and at the same time shocked. "Because I live here..?" she answered.

(Y/n) rolled her eyes before making direct eye contact. "You don't even do anything to contribute to this household. Not even clean the house. You're barely at home!" she exclaimed. "You basically left us. So why are you still here?!"

It apparently struck a nerve as her mother stood up to look more intimidating. "I gave birth to you, I kept you in my womb for 9 months, and this is how you treat me, your own mother?!" she shouted back.

"The mom that I love would love me and take care of me whenever I am feeling down! Not be around other men while leaving her kids alone!" (Y/n) said before feeling a stinging pain on her cheek. She got slapped.

She didn't wait for any words to come out of her mother's mouth before heading back out and let her legs bring wherever they want to.

While deep in thought, she accidentally walked into a tall figure. "Ah, sorry." she said without even looking at the person she walked into.

She was about to leave when the person grabbed her arm. She was about to push the person away before realizing who it was.

"(Y/n), why are you crying?" Akaashi asked as his face spells out worry. Because of that question and her bottled up emotions, she ended up crying harder and spilling her emotions all over.

Akaashi decided to bring her to a nearby bench that was also in the local park.

Once seated, he waited for (Y/n) to calm down because asking a question again. "Do you want to explain why you were crying?"

(Y/n) took a deep breath and let out a sigh before explaining her situation. From her mother cheating, to her father finding out, to the arguing, divorce, getting neglected, and now.

"..." Akaashi said nothing as he tried to process the story his childhood best friend had told him. "Sorry.." (Y/n) said as she was staring at the ground. She felt bad for pushing all her problems to him.

"No, it's fine. It's just a lot to take in." Akaashi said.

Akaashi continued staying by her side as they occasionally caught up on life. Akaashi explained that he came to Fukurodani because he admired one of the players there, and it was probably a mistake because he was actually more of a child than a high schooler. That made (Y/n) let out a genuine laugh.

This continued on until it was almost midnight. (Y/n) thought that she has been gone for long enough and decided to go home and face her mother.

When she stood up and left after saying her goodbyes, Akaashi followed. "Keiji? Isn't your home the other way?" she asked.

"I can't let you go home alone, especially at this time. It's dangerous." he said. (Y/n)'s heart skipped a beat as their relationship was slowly coming together again.

{ honestly i would have stopped here but the reader requested more, so instead let's make it an omake! }

==O M A K E==

It's been a year since Akaashi and (Y/n) became best friends again and they've become close, if not closer than before.

(Y/n)'s mother moved out on the night they fought and the 2 siblings couldn't have been happier.

(Y/n) started hanging out with Akaashi and going to his practices again. When she first entered the gym with Akaashi, people thought that they were in a relationship, but (Y/n) denied all of their assumptions because they were not a couple, yet.

Well, until (Y/n) went to Akaashi's class to see him having a conversation with a girl. He was so into the conversation that he didn't notice his best friend at the door of his classroom, which was not that far from his seat.

(Y/n) did not want to interrupt their conversation and was about to leave when someone shouted. "AKAASHI!"

That caught everyone in the class' attention.

It was Bokuto Kotaro. He shouted Akaashi's name as he reached the classroom door.

Only then did Akaashi realize that (Y/n) was there too, but the latter just walked away with a saddened look on her face.

The male stood up quickly and rushed past Bokuto who just stared at the setter.

"(Y/n)!" he called out.

The girl turned around as she didn't realize Akaashi noticing her presence. "Yes? How may I help you?" she asked innocently.

"Why didn't you wait for me?" he asked back. "You looked so interested in the conversation and I didn't want to interrupt." she answered with a bit of sass in her voice.

"... Did you get jealous of me being close to another girl?" Akaashi asked in a slightly teasing tone. (Y/n) turned her head towards the male very quickly. "H-Huh?! Why would I be jealous of something like that??" she stuttered. "It's not like I'm scared of you having a girlfriend or anything.." she mumbled that part but Akaashi managed to hear it.

"Hm? Why? Do you want to be my girlfriend instead?" Akaashi teased her. This was a side only people very close to him would see.

"..Yes.." she mumbled again and of course, Akaashi heard it.

"What?" he said as he stopped in his tracks. Thankfully, they reached their usual lunch spot, which was outside the school building, and there were barely any people around.

The (h/c) haired girl took a deep breath to mentally prepare herself before saying, "Akaashi Keiji, I like you." as confidently as she could be.

The male just stared at her as she tried to process her words. Apparently he took too long as she then added, "It's okay if you don't feel the same way, we can still be friends." she said as her face softened.

"No!" he suddenly exclaimed and it shocked the poor girl. " 'No' ?"

"Yes! 'No'! " he said with a tint of worry..? before calming himself down. "(L/n) (Y/n), I like you too. Will you be my girlfriend? "
