One-sided Love
Ushijima Wakatoshi x Reader
***
"Wakatoshi-kun, I think I'm going to finally give him a chance."
From the television screen, Ushijima Wakatoshi's eyesight darted to you. He looked at you with furrowed brows, as if trying to understand what you just said.
Realizing that, you continued, "You remember [Ultimate Non-Haikyuu Bias], right? He's been courting me for over a month now."
Ushijima frowned even more. "Do you like him?"
You didn't respond for a minute as you averted his inquisitive gaze, feeling the tightening of your chest. It was always hard to lie whenever he looked at you like that. "I don't. But he really likes me, he's cute and he's very kind, so maybe if I spend time with him I'll eventually develop feelings for him."
You had finally reached to a conclusion after thinking about this for days now.
After years of loving Ushijima Wakatoshi one-sidedly, you had finally decided it was time for you to give up.
"Is that really what you want?" he asked again. It sounded like he wasn't very convinced.
You were sitting side by side on the couch inside your living room, a volleyball game was playing on the television screen in front of you. It was a match between Karasuno High School and Inarizaki High, you had it recorded earlier today so you could watch it together with Ushijima after he was done with his volleyball training.
Having been friends with Ushijima Wakatoshi since middle school after your family moved to his neighborhood, you two had gotten very close. He might be a little overbearing sometimes, but that was only because he lacked social skills and would always end up saying what was truly in his mind. You knew all of that, and you also knew that he was kind beneath that intimidating appearance. That was the reason why you started harboring romantic feelings for him.
Your heart didn't stand a chance when facing Ushijima's one of a kind charm.
However, you knew that someone who was devoted to volleyball like him wouldn't really have the time for love and for anything romantic so you kept your feelings a secret all this time.
Shrugging your shoulders nonchalantly, you said, "I guess? But I do feel sorry for him so I—"
"Then you're just being cruel."
The frown on his face only deepened and you swallowed instinctively. He looked like he was upset and disappointed with you. You heaved a deep sigh as you decided to tell him the truth. "Actually, I rejected him thrice already but he's too persistent."
He remained silent for a minute, as if trying to analyze the situation. "So he's trying to make you feel sorry for him? A real man should know when to give up."
Surprised, you blinked your eyes twice. "Where did you learn that, Wakatoshi-kun?"
"Well, I just heard Tendo and the others talking about this a while ago."
You chuckled. "Wow. Tendo-kun really has a manly side to him, after all."
"Tendo is a man," he said flatly, not really getting your point.
You couldn't help but laugh at that. You were really going to miss talking and spending time with him like this.
You had decided that after you accept [Ultimate Non-Haikyuu Bias]'s feelings, you would spend less time with Ushijima. It was for the best. To move on from this one-sided feelings you have for him, you had to keep your distance.
"Is dating that guy really going to make you happy?" he suddenly said in a much serious tone, looking at you intently. "You look happier when you're with me."
Your eyes widened at what he said, completely surprised. Then all of a sudden you felt like crying, but you held it in as you gave him an ironic smile. "You're really unfair sometimes, you know that?"
"I'm not. I'm just telling the truth."
You turned your attention towards the interesting match that was playing on the television screen, trying to regain your composure. You thought Ushijima was also focused on it now given the fact that Hinata Shoyo was playing but you were entirely wrong.
You even flinched when he suddenly held your arm, getting your attention. You turned to look at him once again, just in time to see him lean closer to you.
"W-What are you doing?" you asked, flustered.
His face was mere inches away from yours, it almost looked like he was going to kiss you. But you knew Ushijima well. There was no way in hell that's going to happen.
Upon realizing what he just did, Ushijima froze. He inched away a little, looking away to avoid your stare. There was a hint of a blush on his cheeks that had you gasping softly. "I don't know. Sorry for startling you."
"It's fine. You look like you have something to say though?"
"I..." he started as he finally met your gaze, staring directly into your [Eye Color] eyes. "I don't like to see you date other guys."
It was your turn to frown. "Other guys?"
"Well, I'm not entirely sure what dating is but if it means you just have to spend time together and make each other happy, I think I can do a better job at that than anyone else."
To say that you were surprised would've been an understatement, you were completely shocked. You started to doubt your hearing for a moment there, you even started to doubt if this was a dream. Like maybe you fell asleep while watching Karasuno and Inarizaki's match and then started having this absurd dream.
After all, Ushijima Wakatoshi acting like this was next to impossible.
And because you were speechless, he continued, "Don't act too surprised. You know I'm right."
You couldn't help but laugh upon hearing what he said and the bitterness that was lacing his deep voice. Then you reached for his neck, wrapping your arms around it and pulling him closer, kissing him softly on his cheek. He stiffened up in shock, blinking his eyes innocently.
Oh, my. He's too cute and precious for you.
"You have to do that sometimes to make me even more happier," you teased, smiling blissfully.
"Really?" He was seriously considering it, and it only made you giggle again.
Honestly, being with him was enough. Knowing that you were also someone he couldn't afford to lose, knowing that he was also thinking of you as more than just a friend, it was more than enough. He didn't need to do something that he wasn't comfortable with. After all, he was right.
You were the happiest when you're with him.
However, Ushijima Wakatoshi didn't share the same thought as you. He clearly wanted more because he crossed the distance between your faces and planted a gentle kiss on your cheek, same way you did to him just a minute ago.
"I'm still not used to this, but I learn fast. So you'll have to teach me more of the things that will make you happy, [Name]."
