While in the flashback, memories kageyama's present day thoughts

Kageyama

"I'm so sorry. . ." I whisper. I'm the last one left. Not even his own mother stayed.

Flashback

"Kageyama, I. . . I love you. . . " He said quietly, looking down at his feet.

"I. . . Hinata. . . I love you, too. . . But I can't. . . I shouldn't. For your own sake, you need to go back." My voice cracked at the end.

"Kageyama! There's obviously something standing between us, but we can break through it! I know we can! We have to." He stepped closer and reached for my hand, a few tears falling down his cheeks.

"GET AWAY FROM ME!!" I screamed, crying harder. "DON'T YOU SEE?? I'M DANGEROUS!! ONE DAY, I'LL WANT MORE AND I WON'T BE ABLE TO STOP AND I'LL JUST END UP HURTING YOU!"

"I DON'T CARE!!" He screamed at me. "STOP BEING SO SELFISH!"

"I'M BEING SELFISH??" I was shocked.

"IF YOU DON'T FEED ON SOMEONE, YOU DIE!" He poked my chest. "HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO LIVE THE REST OF MY LIFE WITHOUT YOU??"

"IF I FEED ON YOU TOO MUCH THEN YOU DIE! HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO LIVE AN ETERNITY WITHOUT YOU???"

I shouldn't have said that.

We were both silent, tears cascading down our cheeks. "Tobio. . . "

"Don't!" I stopped him. "Don't "Tobio" me right now. . ."

"Please. . . who else is going to volunteer?"

"I'll do what I did before."

"And what's that? Robbing hospitals?"

"Don't put it like that. . . !"

"But that's exactly what you're doing." He stepped forward. "You're taking blood that people donated to the hospital, illegally. Please. . . " He stuck out his arm.

I looked at it, I needed it desperately, but I didn't want it. "N-No, I-"

"Tobio." He looked up at me. "Please. You need it."

"I. . . I can find other ways, I don't need human blood I just-"

"So do this now and we will find a better way later. Together." He held his arm out further.

I looked him in the eyes, pain must have been showing in mine. He nodded. I looked down at his arm.

Slowly, I bit into it. The feeling of warm blood flowing into my mouth overcame me as I let tears drop. I felt so guilty. . .

I pulled away. "I'm sorry. . ."

"Tobio, I begged you to do that. Don't be sorry." He cupped my cheek. "Can I kiss you?"

"I mean, my mouth is sorta filled with your blood right now, but if you want. . . "

And then he kissed me. It was short, but filled with passion and purpose. A purpose to make up for wasted time.

"Wow. . . " I whispered.

"Yeah. . . " We stayed like that for a few minutes before the sun started to come up and we had to go inside.

"So what's the alternative?" I asked. "I'm not feeding off of you again, I don't want to kill animals, and I would rather not steal from hospitals."

"Well, why exactly do you drink blood in the first place?" He asked.

"I can't go into the sun, so I need to find a different way to get vitamin d. Drinking blood was just one of the easiest ways in the 1500s and I never thought about it until I started loving you. Wanting to protect you."

He pulled out his phone and looked up foods high in vitamin d.

"It says here to eat and drink fortified foods, such as milk and orange juice, as well as fish such as salmon, tuna, sardines, and mackerel. Beef, shitake mushrooms, egg yolks, and fortified cereals are also good sources of vitamin d." He told me.

"So we try that."

"I'll go get some." He left the apartment without another word.

I wish he said one more thing before he left. . .

After he came back, he put the food away and gave me some of the cereal he bought.

"Try it." He told me.

I took a bite. It wasn't half bad. "It. . . it gives me the same satisfaction as blood. . . Hinata!" I smiled, picking him up in a high and twirling him around. "You're a genius! Thank you." I put him down and finished the cereal.

I should have held him longer. Tighter.

We tried this new diet for three months and it worked like a charm. I no longer longed for blood.

"Hey, Kageyama?" He said one day. "I've been thinking. . . "

"About?"

"Well, the last time you fed on me, you said something. You asked me how you were supposed to live an eternity without me. . . "

"Yeah, and?"

"Well, I'm not immortal. So that's going to happen at some point."

"Shouyou. . . I don't want to talk about this."

"But just hear me out." He grabbed my hands and looked into my eyes. "Turn me, and it won't."

"No! I-. . . It would kill you!" I said. "Turning you into a vampire requires me biting you and replacing a portion of your blood with that exact amount of vampire venom. If I get the proportions wrong, even by a little bit. . . You would die. It's sort of like passing All For One on to someone else." He looked at me shocked. "What? I watch anime too!"

"I know the risk. But I want to spend eternity with you. Please, Tobio. . ."

I was silent for a long time. "Fine."

I should never have said that. I should never have agreed to that.

"Yes!" He put out his arm. I hesitantly bit into it, sucking some of the blood out and releasing some venom.

When I let go, he looked different. I had messed up.

I should have been more careful.

He passed out and never woke up.

End Flashback

And now here I am. Sitting by an open grave. Alone. My one true love in a box at the bottom.

All because of me.
