" LOVE NOTES "

[ THIRD PERSON'S P.O.V ]

'Hello, how are you?'

Those four words were written on the first note (f/n) received one day, which she found inside her locker. At first, she didn't mind it, and thought that it was some kind of prank. And she didn't have time for that.

(f/n) is one of the smartest, and high ranking student in Shiratorizawa. She does nothing but study, study, and study. It was like, she was born to study and excel in all academic aspect. And she loved the satisfaction learning gives her, even ignoring the fact that there's a empty void in her heart that can't be filled by type of studying or happy learning.

Of course, she thought the notes where stupid and a waste of time, so she didn't give it any attention. But, as weeks passes by, she constantly kept receiving these notes or memo every week when the last day of school in a week ends. She goes to her locker and when she opens it, there was always this green envelope with a letter inside of it. Often, the letter would contain few words, like: "Hi, you look great today.", "Please eat well and always get enough sleep.", "You did well on your studies again this semester. You're amazing as always, keep it up.", "Your hairstyle looks nice.", etc.

At first glance, yes, it is stupid and kinda creepy. It looked like she had a shady stalker who kept watching her, but all in all, the words in the notes clearly meant no harm. It doesn't say creepy phrases that has spooked her so far, and since she only receive one memo per week, she let it be.

Written at the back of every envelope of the love notes, there's this consistent phrase, which she ignored at first. It said, "If you want someone to talk to, I'm here. Reply by putting your letter inside this envelope and leave it at the top of the lockers. Thank you and have a nice week."

2 months has passed by, and (f/n) started to enjoy getting these sweet, love notes, to the point that she can't wait until the last bell rings so that she can head immediately to her locker and check the letter. However, her top priority was to study, get high grades and graduate as the top student of her school. That was her goal, and nothing else seemes to matter but that. Even though she was happy getting the letters, she still wouldn't mind if it stopped, because still, studying was her top priority.

Until one day, when everything all went down.

It was a rainy day, and (f/n) just got her newest memo for the week from her locker. As she changed her shoes, she opened up the same, uniformed envelopes (with the same note at the back still) and took out the note with a small smile on her lips.

It said, "I heard it's gonna be rainy this weekend. I hope you brought your umbrella. In case you didn't, I left you an extra one on top of the locker. Take care always and stay dry." and that was it. Unfortunately, the note was pretty accurate today. She doesn't have an umbrella with her today because her brother took it without her permission earlier this morning.

She looked outside the gates of the school, and noticed that it was raining hard. She chuckled softly as she kept the letter in her bag, and tried to reach of the umbrella on the top of the locker. With a little jump and effort, she finally got it. As she was walking towards the door to exit the school building, she noticed a small note tag on the umbrella's handle.

It said, "Keep the umbrella. Please stay dry always."

"Cute," She whispered softly and smiled as she read the note, and continued to exit the school campus, using the umbrella that her secret person gave her. As she was walking down the road, she thought that maybe it would be nice to meet this secret person. They have helped and encouraged her in lots of ways, and she wanted thank him or her. Maybe, one day.

* * * *

She was at her room, studying, as per usual, when she heard a loud knock on her door.

"Hello?? Is Miss (f/n) (l/n) here??" A male voice was heard from their front door, as (f/n) hurriedly walked downstairs and opened the door.

"Are you Miss (f/n) (l/n)?" A grown man stood in front of her, wearing a police uniform.

"Yes, I am she. What's wrong?" She replied in a serious tone.

"...It's about your parents. They... They got caught up in a gun fight on their way to their vehicle, and then some crazy man who illegally bought a weapon started to fire aimlessly in the parking lot. Your parents... They got hit numerous times..." He calmly explained. She couldn't believe what she just heard. Her heart pounded so loud that it made her unable to breath properly.

"O-Oh my g-god! A-Are they a-alright?! W-where are they?? What h-hospital are t-they confined i-in??" (f/n) panicked, and tried to move abruptly, but the policeman held her in place and asked her to calm down.

"Listen, kid. The doctors tried their best. But the bullets hit their vital spots... There was nothing we could do. I'm so sorry."

And just like that—it felt like the world was upon her shoulders.

(f/n) had a hard time accepting the reality. It was very sudden, and she loved her parents so much. They meant the world to her. That's why she is striving and excelling in everything she does (especially in academics) because she wanted to make her parents proud and happy. Her parents was fairly good to her, and never made her cry even once. She wanted to give back everything to her parents all the support, love, care and time they sacrificed for her. That's why she worked very hard to make them happy.

But, they were gone. They left her. At their funeral, she was crying continously and it was the first time her parents made her cry. Everytime she sees something or someone that would remind her of her parents, she would cry. She can't even bear to face the guests and visitors at the funeral because she can't handle her emotions well. She was smart enough to know that she wasn't the one who can entertain and serve those people who were paying condolences to her and family, so she left that job to her relatives.

At the night before the burial, she received a green envelope, which was very familiar with her.

"Some guy asked me to give this to you." Her aunt said, as she handed (f/n) the said letter. After giving it to her, her aunt went away to go back and talk to the visitors.

(f/n) found herself hastily opening the letter, sniffing as she does. Inside the envelope, there was a hand written letter (as it always were), written by a familiar handwriting.

It said, "Hello, (l/n)-san. Condolences to you and your whole family. I'm sorry for what happened, I really am. I'm sorry if I can't say this directly to you, but I'm pretty sure now is not the right time to meet. I already paid my condolences earlier before giving this letter to your relative. I won't ask you if you're alright, because it's obvious that you're not. It's okay to cry. Please do cry until you feel better. Don't cry too much though, your eyes will hurt and it will affect you physically and mentally. I hope it gets better for you soon. I really do. But I know it's not gonna be easy, because I know. I lost someone important too before. It was a friend, and she committed suicide for reasons that I did not know. But I was sure that if were there for her, it wouldn't happen. Even now, I am not over it, but I have learned to accept it. I hope you learn to accept it too, soon. Take care always, (l/n)-san. Always know that I'm here for you."

It was by far, the longest note–no, letter, she had ever  received from this secret person. She cried again, standing up as (f/n) tried to find her aunt.

As soon as she found her, she tapped her shoulders and her aunt excused herself from the visitors as soon as she recognized the presence of her niece.

"What is it?" her aunt asked.

"Where is the person who gave this to you?" (f/n) held up the green envelope, with tears still in her eyes as she looked at her aunt.

"Oh, he already left after giving it to me. Why?"

"Damn it," (f/n) cursed under her breath, as she ignored the question and rushed outside the funeral establishment.

"Where are you..." She whispered softly as tears tried to escape from her (e/c) eyes, still trying to search for this man in the dark.

But he was nowhere to be found.

* * * *

Weeks passed by after the death of her parents, but she still hasn't gotten better. The excruciating pain still remained in her heart, every single day.

She wasn't able to proper function at school either—missing homeworks, deadlines and all. She stopped going to school for a few days after the funeral, which made her more horrible by just staying at home; where all her memories with her parents are. So, (f/n)'s relatives begged her to go back to school, hoping she would temporarily forget the pain and talk with her friends. But, they knew there was nothing that could take the trauma and pain away from her. But maybe, someone will.

On the day she came back to school, a lot of people comforted her and tried to talk to her. She was grateful for it, but it was simply not enough. But there is something that kept messing with her mind for a while—that secret someone who always gives her the love notes.

The last bell for the day rang, and the teacher dismissed their students. The numerous students stood up from their chairs, and walked out of the classroom with their friends.

"Hey, (f/n). Wanna walk home together today?" A friend of (f/n) approached the gloomy female, as she raised her head up and looked at her friend.

"No, I'm okay. I know you have training today, and that you're gonna miss it just because you want to take your depressed friend home," She casually stated, as she stood up and swung her bag on her shoulder.

"Hahaha, I can see you're sharp and smart as always," Her friend scratched the back of her head, admiting that (f/n) was right. "But are you sure you'll be fine? I don't mind missing one training," Her friend insisted, but she knew how much the trainings meant to (Friend's name) and that their tournament date was near.

"I'm fine. I'll be alright, (Friend's name). Let's just see each other tomorrow." (f/n) grinned faintly, reassuring her friend as she placed her hand on their shoulder abd patted it gently.

"Okay. See you tomorrow then! Don't be absent, or else I'll come running to your house and watch anime with you," Her friend teased as they shared a few laugh before she left the room, leaving (f/n) alone in an empty space.

"Sigh... Why couldn't I be more honest to myself?" The lone female whispered to herself, as she fixed her things on the table and grabbing a few things to her bag.

Then, she saw something that doesn't belong to her, but was given to her.

That familiar green envelope.

Her eyes widened at the sight of the object, and her hands immediately caught it, hastily opening it and taking out the note itself.

It said, "Hey, (l/n)-san. It's been weeks since I last saw you. I'm getting worried. I know you aren't checking my past notes and your locker, so I placed one here on your desk. I'm sorry if it seems creepy. I just wanted to make sure you get my messages." and that was all.

She flipped the paper, hoping to read a continuation, but there wasn't anymore letters that can be found. She immediately kept the letter and the envelope in her bag, as she ran out of her classroom, and went straight to her locker.

When she opened it, two envelopes fell to her feet as her (e/c) eyes followed it down, and then averted it back inside the locker. There is over 10 envelopes that she could see, and that flooded her view. She opened them one by one, with her heart aching in sadness, but with a little bit of... joy.

Most of the letters asked how she was doing, and consistently apologizing how sorry he is for filling your locker with his notes. Some even contained lesson notes that she missed on the days she was absent. But 2 letters caught and melted her heart, making her desire to meet this "guy" who has constantly giving her these little inspirations and motivations she held.

The first one said, "Hi, (l/n)-san. It's only been 2 days that you have not been present, and I'm already worried and nervous. I think I won't be able to follow my schedule of 'one note per week' anymore, because I am scared I might miss a chance of you going to school. So, I decided to give you one everyday. Even if you don't read it. I want to let you know I am here for you, waiting you to reply."

The second one was given to her (or placed at the locker, at that matter) yesterday, and it said, "Hey. I know I have said this a few times already, but I am sorry for the many notes. I want to say sorry to you for not being brave enough to face you. To comfort you at the funeral. I just don't know how to act or what to say if I were to talk to you in person. But I am definitely sure I will stutter if I talk to someone as beautiful and wonderful as you are. I just didn't have the courage and confidence to do so. That's why I hide behind these letters, these notes, so I can fully portray my feelings for you without getting embarrassed, and so that I can say everything I want properly. But just so you know, I really want to meet you, look into your eyes, and hear your melodic voice. I want to be there with you, (l/n)-san. I want to be there by your side, hold your hand and tell you every single day that everything's going to be alright. I hope I find that courage one day. I like you so much, (l/n)-san. Please always be well."

Tears started dropping to the paper she was currently holding, as her grip on it tightened. This wasn't a love note anymore, it's a confession letter.

She bit her lower lip, trying to contain her sobs, as she pulled out a pen and paper from her bag. (f/n) has decided to take courage too, and wrote something on the paper. She then placed it inside the envelope, with tears still falling from her eyes.

"I want to meet you. Tomorrow, 5 pm, here at the front gate. I'll wait for you." was all she wrote as her reply and placed it at the designated area, as the consistent note on the envelope instructed.

The female gathered all of the letters inside the locker, and kept it all in her bag before going home. As she walked towards her house, she wiped her tears away and smiled softly.

Finally, something I can look forward to tomorrow.

* * * *

Another day at school passed by so fast, and the dismissal bell rang before (f/n) noticed it. She glanced at the wall clock, being extremely cautious of the time.

As the students around her stood up, she rummaged around her desk, hoping to find a letter. But there no green envelope to be found. Just before she could stand up from her seat, her friend walked up to her with her hands clapped together.

"(f/n)! I'm sorry I can't go with you today! Tomorrow's the tournament and I really need to attend the practice match I have with another school," She apologetically explained, with her eyes tightly closed and almost bowing in front of (f/n).

"It's okay, (Friend's name). I understand. Goodluck on the practice match. Thank you for always looking out for me. I appreciate it," (F/n) replied with a sweet smile, which made her friend look up to her and returned and soft smile as well. She bid farewell to her, as they both exited the classroom, but headed in a different direction afterwards. She was really okay with it, but she can't help but feel lonely and left behind. That every single person around her was living in the present, but she was still caught stuck in the past.

While walking towards her locker, the female glanced at her wrist watch, informing herself that it's 4:57 pm already. Despite the nervousness she felt all day, she was excited to meet this person.

She went straight to her locker, opening it quickly. However, her eyes didn't see nor find any green envelope. She was bothered, but shrugged off, thinking that why would he reply via notes, if they're already gonna meet in person.

Raising her reach by pushing herself up with her feet and toes, she placed her hand on the top-right of the locker, seeing if the envelope was gone and the secret person has taken it already. After searching for a few seconds, she couldn't find anything. So, she was rest assured that he could've received her message. This fact excites her more, that she walked to the front gate with a faint smile on her lips.

She again glanced at her wrist watch, and saw that 10 minutes has already passed. It's past 5 pm, but she promised to wait for him. So, she did.

She watched many people and students pass through her as she stood alone beside the front gate, constantly looking at every guy or boy who walks towards her—thinking if they were the one who sent her those love notes for the past few months.

But many more minutes passed by, but no one approached her until the sun went down and students stopped exiting the front gate. Then, worries started to fill her mind.

"Have I misplaced the letter? Did I put it in the wrong place? Did I write the wrong information? What if someone else saw and took the letter? What if it's all just a joke?"

Too many 'what-if's and possibilities ran through her mind, making her go crazy. It was getting dark, and she stood there for almost an hour now. The thought of going home crossed her mind so many times, but she wanted to wait for him.

And as if fate hated her, a heavy rain suddenly poured out. It was very unexpected and abrupt, that it made her froze in place as the raindrops started to soak herself and her clothes.

Then, she remembered.

It was raining like this when her parents died. The sound of the heavy rain really traumatized her, like it was the only thing that she could hear when the police officer that came to her house and gave her the grave news. And this—this broke her down.

(f/n) fell on her knees, crying. Again. Her head and heart ached, as if everything on that day repeated all over again. The thunder and rain shared her sorrow as she continued tearing down under the stormy weather. It didn't matter if she gets wet, nor even her things. It didn't matter if it gets muddy. Nothing seemed to matter anymore.

She sat on the ground, and held her knees close to her, hugging her legs as well. She was trembling in the cold rain, and her eyes were shut close as her heart remained sorrowful, with such words running over and over in her head.

"Everyone leaves."

She wanted to stay there, hoping that she could just freeze to death and let all those painful things she felt for every single day just...disappear.

She lowered her head, and rested her forehead on her knees, which she held close to her chest, and just let the heavy rain drench her as she still sat there at the front gate.

Until, she felt the rain stopped pouring on her. This made her slowly look up, and saw a black umbrella over her. Her eyes carefully gazed to the person who was holding it, and was looking down at her with worry in those slanted, light brown eyes of his.

"(L/n)-san?" His voice sounded so better than she imagined. He was real. He was there, covering her with his umbrella from the freezing rain. She was absolutely speechless. She sniffed as her stare remained at him, and her heart beating fast. Is it really him? The guy from the notes..?

Still in the state of shock, Kenjiro lowered the umbrella to her as he took off his jacket and wrapped it around her drenched body.

"I-I'm sorry I'm late. I've b-been caught up in the v-volleyball practice, and they won't r-really let me go out earlier than t-the usual. I-I'm really sorry." He continued speaking shyly, as his eyes wandered around and his voice stuttered, while (f/n)'s (e/c) eyes still fixated at him. The volleyball player didn't know what to do, and just scratched his head in confusion. He decided to help her stand up, and grabbed her things with his other free hand.

"H-How long have y-you been here? Look a-at you, you're a-all wet at soaked in the r-rain. Didn't you b-bring the umbrella I-I gave you? Let's g-go find some—"

"You...you're here...?" The female suddenly spoke after a long pause, interrupting the male as the two of them looked at each other's eyes under the umbrella, sheltering them from the pouring cold rain.

"P-Pardon?" He questioned, as it wasn't clear to him because the rain was loud and (f/n)'s voice was too weak. His heart raced faster and hus face getting redder, as the girl he likes stared intently at him. However, he did noticed the tears and sadness in her eyes, making him less tensed.

"You're here..." Her eyes started watering up again, and abruptly embracing the man in front of her without a second thought. This made Kenjiro blow a fuse at her sudden actions, as she buried her face at his chest, and her arms wrapped around his waist.

"Uhm, (L-L/n)-san?" He softly called her name once again, as he still tried to protect themselves from the rain.

"Please don't leave me..." She uttered in a muffled voice, as she started to cry harder and louder. Shirabu noticed this, and gathered up the courage he has keeping in for this day. He embraced her back with one hand, and caressed her (h/c) hair tenderly.

"I'm here, (L/n)-san. I'm here now." Kenjiro whispered to her in a comforting matter, as her hold on him tightens and her sobs getting heavier. He really never thought this day would come.

After a few seconds of letting her cry as much as she want, (f/n) let go of the hug, and wiped her remaining tears away from her eyes. She looked up at him, witnessing the beautiful stranger she had being hugging the whole time, blushing at unable to make eye contact with her.

"W-What's your name?" She finally nervously inquired—the question she had been wanting to ask all this time.

"Shibaru Kenjiro, (L/n)-san." He answered with a sweet smile on his lips, and a precious look at his eyes. "It's finally nice to meet you." He added. Despite his cool manner of introduction, Kenjiro knew that his heart couldn't calm down and silently went wild in his chest.

"Shirabu Kenjiro..." She repeated with her own voice, making the male's heart flutter upon hearing her pronounce his name. That's a first.

"Nice to finally meet you too, Shirabu-kun." (f/n) beamed up a warm smile at the setter, despite her tired eyes from crying. The boy's heart beat started racing faster at the elegant image she gave in front of him, and the fact that he had finally get to see her this close with an actual, live conversation.

"Y-Yeah..." was his only response, as his mind went blank with nothing to say, just as he predicted in his letter.

"So, uh, sorry for crying suddenly like that. I really just needed to let it out, and uh, I appreciate you comforting me in my outburst." She timidly responded, feeling a little embarrassed at her actions. "Sorry for also hugging you all of the sudden like that. I know it's kinda weird and I—"

"(L/n)-san." Shirabu interrupted her words, as he stepped closer to her, as his tall body went nearer her face. Secretly, Kenjiro was trembling, but was able to overcome it with a few encouragement from himself.

"Huh?" She looked at him with a confused reaction, as his hand went up and cupped her cheeks gently.

"Please don't say sorry for something like that. It's okay, and it's certainly not your fault. I'm here now to listen, and be here for you. Please always remember that." He calmly stated, as her eyes and ears was filled with wonder. He looked at her as he spoke those poetic words, like she was the most important and beautiful thing in his world. The way he sounded was like in his letters, genuine and sweet. Warm and comforting. And he's now here, right in front of her eyes.

Before she could even say anything, the male fixed his jacket on her and covered her upper body to protect her from the cold breeze the storm brought.

"The weather is getting stronger, we should go home before the cold gets to us, don't you think?" Kenjiro simply added, as he motioned her to walk and exit the front gate, where they have been standing for minutes.

"Y-Yeah..." She replied at the boy with faint smile, as the two of them walked together under one umbrella. "Uh, Shirabu-kun?" She called.

"Y-yes?" He responded stammering, still can't get over with her calling him like that. It still makes his heart go crazy.

"Do you know where I live?" She questioned honestly, walking closer to him.

"A-Actually, no... I mean, I tried to follow you one day because I was worried but I realized that it was bad and creepy so..." He answered hesitantly, as his light brown eyes wandered everywhere but on her.

(f/n) giggled sofly at his words and reaction, as she clung on his arms next to her and smiled secretly. "Will you walk home with me?" She added casually, not knowing her giggle was enough to make his face redder and unable to look at her.

"S-Sure, why not..." He replied with a stammer, still can't look at her eyes straight.

"...Thank you for everything, Shirabu-kun." She uttered, but loud enough for him to hear.

He smiled weakly, and replied with his hands clenching harder. "Anything for you, (L/n)-san."

As they walked silently on the road home, the rain slowly disappeared at exactly the moment the two arrived in front of (f/n)'s house. Kenjiro closed the umbrella, and shook it a little bit for the remaining raindrops to fall. He handed her the bag with a sweet smile, and it was her turn to blush at his actions, being such a gentleman.

"H-Hey, Shirabu-kun?" She called out with her head laying low, as her fingers tugged the hem of Kenjiro's shirt.

"Yeah?" He answered, as he looked at her and the way she held him at the edge of his clothing.

"W-What you said i-in the letter... D-Did you mean it?" Biting her lower lip, she clenched her other fist, and her gaze remained at the ground.

"Yes. Every single letter in every single note." He replied without any hesitation in his voice, as he moved closer to her. He grabbed the wrist of her hand that was holding him, and pulled her into an embrace.

"I like you very m-much, (L/n)-san... I'm not saying this because I am r-requiring you to l-like me back, well, I mean that could be great too..." The male whispered the latter part, with his words still in jumble. "But I just want you to know that I am ready to prove my words into action..." He continued, as he pulled away from the embrace and placed his hands on both of her arms.

"...that is if you let me." He finished, making her look up on his eyes. They both smiled at each other, and it's like they had their own world that evening. Everything was perfect.

"Sure, why not?" (f/n) gave him a tender smile that shone brighter than any sun, making him utterly speechless at her agreeing that he could court her.

She then grabbed his left hand, and covered it with both of her cold, yet soft hands. Her (e/c) mesmerizing eyes glanced at him, as he remained silent and in surprise.

"Would you like to come in for some hot coffee? Or chocolate drink? Or tea... Anything? It's the least I can do for you after all you've done for me..." She trailed off as her eyes went around and to the ground, before coming back to gaze at his, waiting for his response.

His heart melted at the vulnerability he's seeing in the girl he likes, and he was really happy to finally found the courage to ask and court her. If it's for her, he was sure he won't regret any decision that he'll make. The male returned a soft smile, and nodded his head in agreement.

"Y-Yeah, sure."
