" ACE OF MY HEART "
[ THIRD PERSON'S P.O.V ]
It was late afternoon; a time of day where the skies are painted with radiant orange-- different hues of it--and yellow. The atmosphere was warm for everyone; as the sun starts to disappear in the horizon. The school bell has ringed a few hours before already, and only several people can be spotted walking around the campus of Aoba Josai. It was all quiet, when a certain voice of a girl called out his name.
"Hajime-kun! You forgot your Math notebook!" Miriam ran across the empty hall, as her shoe's heels stepping on the glossy floor echoed around the corridor.
"Hm?" The male turned his head slowly, as him and Oikawa headed towards the school's gate.
"Hajime-kuuuun!" The image of a girl wearing her blue uniform--running to him--quite stunned the boy. He looked away, but only stopped his footsteps.
"Your math... notebook..." Miriam pants as she let her hands fall on her knees; squatting a bit. After regaining some oxygen, she took a deep breath and straightened her body.
"Hello Miriam-chan!" Oikawa cheerfully greeted the young woman, as she smiled in response.
"Oh hi Tooru-kun!" The girl replied with the same amount of energy, trying to match the brunette's aura.
"Here." She handed the notebook to Iwaizumi, who's standing beside the setter.
"Oh, thanks," Hajime replied with a dull tone--which is unusual for him.
"No Hajime-kun--thank you, because without your notes, I wouldn't be able to pass the recent quiz." Miriam exhales with relief in her voice.
"I'm glad to help," The boy showed off a sweet, slight grin; as he returns the notebook back at his bag.
The girl standing in front of him blew a fuse; turning her whole face into pale red. Good thing Iwaizumi wasn't looking or she'll curse herself for life if he saw that she blushed madly over his single, rare smile that she got.
"Um, Mir--"
"T-then I-I'll be g-going, b-bye!" Unconsciously, she interrupted the boy from saying something, due to her continues; non-stop beating heart. She became nervous, started to stutter at her words, and unable to think clearly with her distracted state of mind.
She ran away; as Miriam can already feel droplets of sweat divulged from her face and neck. After a few steps, she turned right--and she was out of the peripheral view of the boy she loved.
Miriam headed back to her other friend--who's waiting for her return, when she said that she's only gonna return the notebook of the ace--with heavy steps; she did.
"Hey Miri--"
"He smiled at me, Angeline! He freakin' showed a genuine smile at me--" Miriam appeared before her girl best friend, feeling so flustered and butterflies were all over her stomach.
"Okay, you're going crazy again, girl. Calm down... Inhale... Exhale..."
"Okay, okay..." She did follow her friend's suggestion, but she ended up blushing even more.
"... But I'm overflowing with happiness right now, Angeline! I can't just calm down," Her optimistic behavior right now was normal for her friend; so she knows very well how to handle this kind of "emotional" heart attack.
"Fine, you win," Her friend groaned in defeat; as Miriam grabbed her bag, and the two pals started walking on the dry, concrete road home.
"He just smiled at you, Miriam. Don't treat it like it's a big thing." Angeline stated as she rolls her eyes politely; trying to calm her best friend down.
"Dude, his smiles are to die for. I can barely see him grin like that, so let me be." Miriam explains thoroughly; puffing her cheeks a bit.
"Do you love him?" Angeline suddenly sprouted those words; which Miriam didn't expected that she'll say it now.
"H-h-huh??" The girl sweats beads of water, shuttering as she spoke.
"I said," She exhaled, raising her left eyebrow in exhaustion. "Do you love Iwaizumi Hajime?" Her friend repeated.
"W-well..." Miriam's sense of being hyperactive gradually faded, as she looked on the ground; and gave a tight grip on her bag's handle.
"I don't really know, Angeline..." She bit her lower lip in frustration, unable to answer the question. Miriam asks herself this in so many times; and in so many ways. Yet, she still feels confused. Even though Iwaizumi was her childhood best friend, she couldn't say.
"...I'm sorry, Miriam. Shouldn't have asked you that," Angeline scratches her head in dismay, with the thought that she made her friend emotional again.
"It's okay..." The girl replied with the slightest voice, still deep in thought. And a single ring from her best friend's phone brought her back to reality.
"Who is it?" As her friend opens her phone, Miriam peeked a bit, diverting her eyes at the cell phone's screen.
"Oh my goodness, I got a text from Nishinoya! Ahh!" Angeline shrieked unconsciously as she nervously opened the text message from her crush.
"What does it say??" Miriam curiously questioned her friend as Angeline tried to hide it from her.
"He said: 'Good pm Angeline! Are you free this moment? Care to meet me on the café near the train station?'...Omg Miriam, what do I do?!" Her friend yelped excitedly, as her face went immediately redder than her scarlet eyes.
"Go! Reply to him, and go meet the love of your life!" She cheered for her flustered best friend, and stated it with a wide smile.
"Are you okay with that?"
"Absolutely! Why would I hinder you from an invitation that you've always dreamed of?" Miriam replied instantly as a grin slowly crept on Angeline's lips. The red-faced girl suddenly hugged Miriam with her arms, and happily bid farewell to her.
"Text me later! Tell me what happened!" Miriam yelled to her friend; who's running to a different direction.
"Sure! See ya!" Angeline replied; took a turn to her left, and disappeared on Miriam's sight.
"What a lucky gal." She whispered with a smile, but slowly turned into a frown.
"I wonder... Will Hajime ever tell me that?"
* * * *
"What a day," A big amount of air escaped Miriam's mouth, exhaling enormously. She'd let her body fall on her bouncy bed, and curled up as she placed a pillow in between her legs.
She grabbed her phone on her short's pocket, checking the current time.
It's already 8:45 PM, and she still hasn't received a single text from Angeline.
"That girl..." She pouted and furrowed her eyebrows slightly, as she decided to text her friend.
"'What... happened... bro'... and...send." The girl murmured; as she typed in Angeline's number and sent it to her.
Miriam--once again--exhaled deeply, dropping her phone softly on the bed.
Then, a jingle was heard.
Miriam averted her brown orbs to her cell phone, and saw the butterfly key chain; securely tied in her phone.
With care, she held it in her palm, observing it. "Hajime..." Miriam whispered in a very weak voice as she stared closely at the bell, that's imbedded on the wooden butterfly's colorful wings.
She can still remember it; as clear as she could.
She remembered that day.
That day when Iwaizumi saved her from those bullies.
//flashback//
It was 12 years ago, when she was still living 7 years of her life.
"Give it back!" With a puny cry, the young girl reached high for her butterfly stuffed toy. Unfortunately, she was too short in height, compared to the bully who snatched her favorite toy among all.
"Bleh bleh, you can't reach it, you can't reach it! Small fry is crying! Hahaha!" A boy with incomparable height teased while he held her butterfly toy up high, laughing with his group of friends.
"I said, give it back to me! It's mine!" Salty tears were already forming at the corner of her tiny eyes. With the wrong timing of her jumping, the young Miriam accidentally stepped on the bully's new-good-looking shoes.
"...You brat! How dare you step on my brand new shoes!" He yelled with a loud voice, making her cover her ears; weeping.
"I-I-I'm s-s-so--"
"Don't you know how expensive is this, huh?!" He even got more irritated, and pushed the little girl down to the dirt. Due to the hard impact, Miriam cried a lot more deafeningly; pissing off the boy to the extent he raised his fist, ready to hit the girl.
"Shut up, you small--"
Whack!
A round, multi-colored volleyball approached the bully's face directly, and made him sat in the ground as well.
"Raaaaawrrr!!!" A small brunette roared; eyes flaming fire and ran to the group of boys. Scared to get hit as same as their leader--whose nose is bleeding--they screamed and ran away, together with the leader.
"Jerks." Another voice, Miriam did hear, and it actually stunned her. Her eyes were completely open the whole time, so she saw what happened from start to end. Miriam stopped whining, but still crying.
"Hey, are you okay?" A boy with a spiky hair and short height as well, squats down to her level, and he looked straight through her eyes--which was tired from sobbing.
"Iwa-chan!~ I chased away the enemies~ Just like you told me--"
"Waah!" Miriam suddenly burst out tears again, and hugged the boy in front of him in a split second--making him fall off balance.
"Eh? She's crying again?" The brunette walked near the two children, raising an eyebrow as he asked.
"Y-yeah." The other boy replied as the little girl continued weeping.
But this time, it's not because she's afraid.
It was tears of joy.
//end of flashback//
And that boy is called by the nama Iwaizumi Hajime--her one and only super hero. He gave her the key chain that's attached on her phone a few days after--back then--explaining that he wasn't able to retrieve her toy. So, he replaced it with a beautiful, simple key chain he bought for her.
She treasured it. She treated it like a princess. It may look old and ugly to other's eyes, but it was pretty as ever in Miriam's.
After that day, the three of them became best of friends. Aside the fact that they're nearby neighbors, she and Iwaizmi just clicked together. Their personalities complimented each other, so no doubt they would get along so well.
Along the silence in her room, Miriam hummed her favorite song--the one she can relate the most.
And the answer to her friend's question?
It's no doubt, a yes.
She loved him, ever since they were child. At first, she thought that she's only feeling that way because they're close to each other, and he treated her like a younger sister. But as time passes by, Miriam realized--she was dead wrong.
She loved him. She loved Iwaizumi. So much, and she adored everything about him. She loved his maturity, his boldness as the ace of Seijoh's volleyball ace. And the way he inspires every member of their team just melts her heart; the way he acts as the pillar for every team member breakdown. The way he spikes gracefully. The way he hits the ball powerfully. The expression he makes when they scored because of him. His undying thirst for victory; as their team's beloved ace. Oh, she could give a thousand reasons why she cherished these feelings. But in the process of loving Hajime, it resulted her lot of hardships and broken hearts.
There's this one time where there were rumors that he's courting someone--someone from another school. Sure, this broke her heart, yet she didn't believed in it; and continued to feel affection for him. She won't give up; Miriam promised herself that--even though she felt so many times in doing so.
But, she didn't.
She could wait another set of 12 years for him. She would do anything. Just... Just not sure if she could keep him in her heart forever.
Daydreaming, she was, until her phone rang; which made her jump a little.
It was a reply from her friend.
Frm: brooo
Time: 8:55 PM
Subj: wiee!
Hi, sorry, I just got home.
But, guess what?!
Nishinoya asked me if I can dance with him in the prom! Of course I said yes! Omg bro, I'm so happy right now! He even walked me home!
How about you? Anyone asking you out too?
Miriam's eyes widen as soon as she finished reading her friend's reply. (A/N: angeline is a student from karasuno. The reason why she's at aoba josai b'coz of miriam. They're supposed to go and eat, but thing can change as time flies, right?)
'Right... There's a prom. I wonder if I would still attend,' Miriam thought as she typed a reply to her friend.
To: brooo
Time: 8:56 PM
Subj: woah
That's good news bro! Congrats!
And yeah, no one's asking me yet. I hope no one would lol. I don't know how to dance hahaha.
With a bitter smile, she sent it.
Well, she was hoping Hajime would ask her; which she believed it won't happen, not even in her wildest dreams.
Her phone rang once again, and opened the text.
Frm: brooo
Time: 8:56 PM
Subj: iwachan
Oh, is that so...
Don't you worry; I will pray for you that Iwaizumi-kun will ask you out! Hehehe.
After reading Angeline's text, Miriam secretly grinned as she turned off her phone. She closed the lights, and went back to bed.
The girl gawked at her ceiling, stuck in her train of thought. She scoffed faintly with a smirk on her lips.
"I wish."
* * * *
"Miriaaaam! Come down now! Your friend is waiting for you!" Miriam's mom shouted, and her voice can be heard all over the house. The day has come. The day of the prom for the seniors came in a blink of an eye. She haven't seen Hajime for a while, even though his house are just few steps away.
"Coming!" The girl replied hesitantly; still not done yet with her makeup. All of a sudden, several footsteps arose behind Miriam's door. "I'm coming in, Miriam!" It was Angeline's voice.
Her friend opened the door, and saw Miriam sitting on her bed leisurely, barely done on preparing for prom. Meanwhile, Angeline is all set up. Her gown was simply a beauty, her makeup was beautifully done, and her long black hair is curled brilliantly.
"I don't wanna go," Miriam pouted, clearly disappointed for some reason.
"Please, Miriam. You need to go. This is our last year in high school, and we need to enjoy it to the fullest!" Her best friend pleaded, with her knowing that Nishinoya asked her out.
"Fine. But you do my makeup. I just can't... can't do it right!" Miriam smiles pleasantly with a pout at her friend, as she agreed to go. Angeline amusingly accepted her best friend's request, feeling excited for the occasion for this very special day.
"Challenge accepted!"
* * * *
"This place is sure crowded," Miriam thought as she entered the place that's overflowing with her batch mates. Girls' wearing their best dresses and boy's looking so handsome. Even hers is stunning, cunning and elegant; that goes with the color of bright red with a bit of black as it's design--which her beloved mother picked for her.
But she didn't care about any of those. Immediately, in the crowd, her eyes only searched for one person.
Iwaizumi Hajime.
Bright and dazzling lights illuminated the whole big room; random music fills the atmosphere. The smell of mixed aroma of the food filled everyone's nose, as they dance with their respective couple and partners. In a second, Miriam felt a tint of loneliness in her; as if she was longing for someone.
It wasn't her friend; after all, she's at Karasuno, while she's at Aoba Josai.
It was the only person she wanted to see this day. The one person whom she haven't set eyes on in numerous days. And oh, how she missed him. His presence, his voice. Everything.
Miriam decided to grab a mini cupcake on the food table, while everyone's enjoying the prom with their loved ones. "It sucks to be single on a prom day," The girl pouted, and sat on a steel chair covered with a white cloth; as she munched the chocolate cupcake, with a yellow icing on the top.
"Welcome, batch 2016-2017! Let us enjoy ourselves tonight, and let this be the mark of our last year in high school!" The speaker in front; standing on the stage yelled onto his microphone, and everyone cheers in agreement. The music keeps on carrying the mood through every senior in the auditorium; as Miriam stares blankly at them.
'Where is he...' Is the only thought that entered her mind, feeling so alone amidst the various people in the room. She only wanted to see one certain individual, and her day would be complete. That's all.
However, she wished that someone did ask her out. She merely desired for one personality's presence right now. And that's Hajime's.
The music stopped, and suddenly became solemn. The first instrumental tune was so sweet, even the couples started dancing in their colleague's arms. To be frank, Miriam envied them; them who have an associate whom they can share this night with.
"Wait... I know this song..." She stood up, and paid attention to the melody of the song. "...It's-"
"Say that you love me," A very familiar voice courteously interrupted the female, and everything she hears just...faded away.
"Hajime..." Her voice can be barely heard, as she looked at the male in awe. She never expected him to show up; at this very moment, and right before her. Dumbfounded she was, as Miriam fixated her gaze at him-and at him only.
"Yo, Miriam." The ace beamed a very charming, mesmerizing smile at the girl, and this caused her face to turn bright pink.
"Y-yo, H-hajime! W-what a-are you d-doing here?? Where's y-your p-partner?" Miriam right away hid her face in embarrassment, and looked away from his look. 'Stay calm, my heart!' She said to herself, avoiding blushing even more.
"I don't have one," He at once looked away, and a touch of red become visible in his cheeks; which she found very adorable. Very.
"O-oh... I-is t-that so..." The flustered girl dared to look in his eyes; which she surely didn't regretted afterwards.
"Um, Miriam..?" Iwaizumi called her name, which made her heart skip--a lot--as she responded with a slight hum. The singer of the song started saying the lyrics, and it packed the place with a sweet aura.
"May I have this dance?" Iwaizumi offered out his hand, blushing madly. And as for Miriam?
She was blushing ferociously, alright. Who wouldn't? Who wouldn't be stunned when your life-time-loved-one asked you to dance with him--on a prom night?
"Y-yeah... Sure." Miriam breaks free from all her shyness and gulped nervously. She boasted up all the confidence she had left and showed a smile; that one perfect smile she reserved--just for the guy in her dreams.
He took her hand with care, and gently pulled the girl up. The female can't but smile with the joyfulness; and so did the man. He brought her to the dance floor, and intertwined his boney fingers with tenderness into the girl's soft ones.
Slowly, he placed his right arm on her hips; as she placed her left one on his shoulders, quite trembling. Damn right, she was so hella feeling the bliss right now. Yesterday, this was just merely her dream. Then, it turned to reality.
'Darn it, he's so handsome,' Miriam whispered weakly to herself as she observed the guy in front of her--holding her hands and is currently dancing with her; wearing a good-looking tuxedo. And that's all what mattered to her.
The two danced in rhythm; along with the song melodiously, as they unconsciously stared at each other's eyes.
"Damn it," The male squirt his eyes as he looked away in a very adorable manner; which made Miriam's heart twinge.
"W-what's the matter, H-hajime?" She asked worriedly; as they stopped dancing.
"Sorry. I just can't... can't look straight at you."
"Eh? Why? Is there something on my face?" The girl let her fingers met her face, but she was stopped by the ace.
"No... It's not that,"
"Then what is it?"
"...You just look very beautiful tonight, Miriam. And I don't want to go to the point where I can't control myself..." The male he lowered his head, as he explained; gripping her freezing hands.
"Um, what do you mean by--" Without her consent, the boy pulled her in his arms; and embraced the lady he longed for.
"Wha-wha--"
"Shh, the song is still playing." Iwaizumi murmured in a very low tone of voice; as the girl hesitantly hugged him back. She didn't know why she did--instincts, maybe. Miriam wanted to do this before; for how many times, badly she did. And now, it's happening.
"H-Hajime-kun?" Miriam stuttered as she called out his name. 'Dammit Hajime, why are you doing this to me?! My heart is beating so damn fast, goodness.' The girl can already feel the heat rising in her whole face, and she damn can't stop to blush.
"Just... Let us stay like this for a while. Let me hold you in my arms--just this once. Just let the song finish. Will that suffice?" The boy spoke; that sounded like perfect melody in Miriam's ear, as it smoothly played with her sense of hearing.
"S-sure."
She could feel him tighten his embrace even more; that she, herself can't help to do too, and tears started to appear in her eyes. She can his warmth, his breathe travelling on her nape; slowly tickling her. It was, once again, tears of happiness.
"Miriam."
"Yes--"
"I love you."
She was hoping for, 'You can let go now', or 'I can't breathe' from Iwaizumi's mouth--but no, she was oh so mistaken.
"E-e-eh??" Miriam was obviously left speechless, after what she just heard.
The song finally ended, and the boy did let go of the female. He did not expect that he would say it today, as well as the sight of his beloved one crying. She wasn't informed yet; that she was already sobbing.
"H-hey, a-are you o---"
"I do too, Hajime!" She yelled; getting some people's gaze. But she didn't care though. She was waiting for this her whole life. Her heart aches in happiness-that finally; she can say it with assurance in his face. For almost 12 years, she did wait until he could possibly return her unwanted feeling for the ace. Well, he just did.
"Ever since we were children... I didn't stop in doing so, up to this very day. And you're the greatest thing has ever happened to me..." She smiled genuinely at him, as she confessed to the only man she ever loved and longed for.
"Really...?" Iwaizumi's cheeks immediately became red; obviously flustered in every way he probably can. "How ironic... 'cause I do too," He returned an alluring grin at Miriam, making her giggle cutely.
"I can't believe this is happening. Can you please pinch me?" The girl blinked several few times as the man of her dreams cupped her wet face; gently wiping her remaining tears with his thumb thoroughly. Iwaizumi can't believe it either. This was too much to take in--just only for one night. It was like a dream. A dream where the two wouldn't like to wake up from anymore.
"Instead of pinching you, can I rather do this..." Hajime smirked victoriously; as he slowly leaned closer Miriam's face. She knew he was gonna do it, and never she's going to stop him from doing so.
He pressed his soft, kissable lips tenderly in hers, and he gently drapes his arms around her hips. Another pop song was played by the DJ, as the girl kissed back passionately; feeling so satisfied. The two imparted blissfully through this contact, for at least few minutes. They broke off, panting as their foreheads met in such short distance.
"That felt nice," Miriam grins sweetly at her partner; as the song got a lot more loudly.
"Yeah," Iwaizumi smugly smiled as well; as they both chuckled while Miriam wrapped he arms around his neck.
As the couple communicated through series of smiles and endearing laughs, they sneaked out of the prom room, exited the school and walked across the lonely road of their hometown.
"He's my hero, and the only ace of my heart."
