Kunimi + Kindaichi Part 2

Plot: You are the Student Body President at Aoba Johsai. Your friend Kunimi is feeling a little jealous that you don't have time for him anymore.

"L/N-chan, don't forget about our student council meeting today! It's been moved from 4pm to 5:30 pm."

You glanced at your classmate and nodded. "No problem- Oh, but please ask the Sensei to give us the numbers for our budget this semester."

They saluted you and walked out.

The Vice-President tapped your shoulder. "Can you sign the request for the fundraiser?"

Your eyes skimmed the form that was placed on your desk. Content with the write up, you scratched your signature at the bottom of the page.

"Sensei is asking if we can move our presentation to the beginning of the assembly tomorrow?" One of the committee members asked.

You held back a frustrated groan and nodded. "I'll have to come in to school earlier to set up, but it shouldn't be a problem."

Your friends and classmates were running left and right. It was difficult being the student body president at Aoba Johsai high school but with so many dedicated and kind people to help, you knew you could do it.

As the last of the members left to complete their errands, you sat alone in the classroom.

You closed your eyes and dropped your head back. This was one feeling you could never get tired of: the quiet after hours of hectic anxiety.

Your name wasn't being called because something had gone wrong. You weren't ambushed with forms and requests that were necessary to be agreed upon. You weren't mediating between clubs with conflicting interests.

It was just you, in a quiet classroom.

You blinked your eyes open and nearly fell out of your chair.

"Kunimi what the hell?" you growled. Your heart was beating so fast you were certain he could hear it. "How long have you been standing here watching me?"

The corners of his lips lifted as his sleepy eyes shimmered. "Hello to you too, Chibi."

"We agreed that you wouldn't call me a Chibi anymore."

He stuffed his hands into his pockets and leisurely walked around. "I don't remember agreeing to such a thing."

"Kumini- er Kunimi," you corrected with a furrow of your brows, "did you need something?"

"What? I can't visit my friend anymore? Has Chibi become too busy for her Kumini." You could hear the mockery in his voice.

"Don't make fun of me."

"I'd never."

"And don't call me Chibi."

"Why?" He maneuvered around the desk and grasped your wrist in his hand. In one second he had pulled you to your feet. With a lazy smile on his otherwise passive face, he towered over you. "You haven't grown taller, Chibi, so you're still a Chibi to me."

"I grew!" you pouted.

"Barely."

You couldn't bring yourself to correct him. It was true, you were hardly in the five foot range and he had already hit six feet.

"Did you need something? The committee has a meeting after school and I haven't organized our monthly numbers for the presentation... why are you staring at me like that?"

He brushed a loose strand of hair behind your ear.

"Staring at you like what?"

"I don't know? You're the one who's staring."

He breathed a laugh but watched you from under hooded lids. "It's because you're a Chibi."

You clenched your hands into fists and resisted the urge to give a witty reply. It had been a long day already and there was still so much to do before you could go home. You lightly pushed at his chest and stepped away from him.

"I don't have time for this game, Kunimi. I am really busy."

Just as you turned to the mountain of paper sitting on your desk, he grabbed your sleeve.

"Seems like you don't have time for me."

"What?"

"I invited you to eat out with us last Sunday and you skipped. Kindaichi asked you to show up to our practice game yesterday and you never showed up. Last night I called you and you sent me to voicemail. I'm seeing a pattern."

"Kunimi-"

"Whatever." His arm dropped to his side. He stuffed his hands into his pockets and dragged his feet as he walked out the classroom.

"Kunimi wait."

He paused in the doorway with his back facing you. "Hm?"

"I'm not avoiding you."

"I know. That's what makes this worse."

"What does that mean?" you frowned.

He sighed and shook his head. "See you around, Chibi."

Your feet moved by its own accord and you reached out. Before your fingers could grasp the back of his shirt he walked away and your phone buzzed from the desk behind you.

Kunimi was a straightforward guy. If he didn't like something he would say so and if something was bothering him he'd make it obvious. You respected him for being upfront about the fact that he was upset with you, but you were also annoyed with him.

"He knows how much responsibility I'm shouldering. He knows how busy I am especially given that student council campaigns are running next week. I don't know when he became so selfish."

Kindaichi stared at you from the corner of his eyes. "I don't know if it's selfishness. I think he's being honest."

"What?"

Kindiachi slowed his steps as he carefully chose his words. He was the middle man between two friends here and he did not want to give the impression that he agreed with Kunimi. Still, he didn't want to give the impression that he agreed with you either.

"Since the school year started and you became Student Body President, you have been spending less and less time with us. Heck, I only see you Wednesday nights because we walk home the same route. I haven't brought it up this entire time because I know how much the Council means to you but Kunimi is different. He's not selfish, Y/N, he's honest. He wants to be a priority."

"He is a priority," you assured him. "You both are. You're my best friends since elementary school who have helped me and stood up for me. In a lot of ways, I wouldn't be Class President if I didn't have your encouragement."

Kindaichi smiled. "We're proud seeing how far you've come, Y/N. Still, it hurts when we see how much farther you can go without needing us anymore."

"Of course I need you. Both of you."

"Maybe Kunimi needs you to be more vocal about that fact."

You had reached the intersection where you would part ways. The conversation seemed to have only started though. You stayed rooted on the side of the road. Kindaichi waited for you to say your final piece.

"He said something that I don't understand."

"What's that?"

"The fact that I'm not avoiding him is what makes the situation worse."

Kindaichi's eyes widened. "He's not just honest. He's jealous."

"What?" you stuttered.

"Man, I've already said too much. He's going to kill me if he finds out."

"Kindaichi, wait, what are you talking about?"

"Sorry Y/N!" he turned around and began to sprint towards his house.

Jealous? Kunimi? You shook your head and began walking. Kunimi was the last person who could experience jealousy. He was too mature for that, too level-headed. He had said it himself a while ago, that jealousy was a turn-off.

So why was he bothered that you weren't avoiding him? Shouldn't it be the opposite?

You barely had room to breathe the next day. You arrived to school by 5am and went to organize the gymnasium for the assembly. Three hours later you were drenched in sweat, wrapping bandages around your fingers from paper cuts, and trying to help the technician with the projector screen.

"Maybe you should sit down," the Vice President offered.

You shook your head, barely looking up from the mess of red, blue, and yellow wires. "The assembly starts in an hour. We need to fix this."

"Exactly, we'll fix this. Don't worry L/N-chan."

The council members pushed you out the gymnasium and closed the doors. You sighed and decided to grab a drink from the vending machines before going back.

Just as you walked down the hallway, the doors to the volleyball gymnasium opened. The boys had finished their morning practice.

Kunimi and Kindaichi were one of the last to leave and so you called their names.

"Hey guys. How was practice?"

"Practice was good," Kindaichi answered for the both of them. He sent a glance to Kunimi but the heavy lidded boy stared down the hallway. "Did you finish your committee work?"

"Almost. We're having problems with the projector. Say, Kunimi, you have a test today, right?"

He chose not to answer you.

"This is so childish. I'll see you both later." Kindiachi didn't leave any room for protest as he sprinted around the corner.

"Really Kunimi? The silent treatment? What are we, five?"

"I wish," he scoffed, "if we were five you would still have time for me."

"I do have time for you."

"Liar."

You crossed your arms over your chest and frowned. "Fine. I bailed last Sunday because the Sensei needed me to finish the slideshow for our meeting. I couldn't make it to your practice game because the budget reports were missing and we needed to recalculate them. I sent your call to voicemail because it was past midnight and I didn't want to wake my family."

He narrowed his eyes at you. There was no anger or frustration present in his gaze, but there were a dozen other emotions swirling in the chocolate browns.

"I haven't had a proper conversation with you in so long that I'm left thinking how much you've changed. I haven't seen you for more than two minutes a day since school started. It makes me want to throw you over my shoulder and run away from all this."

You stepped back. You could feel heat creeping up your neck and colouring your cheeks. So that's what it was. The emotions in his eyes were that of jealousy and longing.

"Kumini- er, Kunimi, didn't you say that jealousy is a turn-off? That it's one of the worst qualities to have?"

He brushed his fingers against yours. The touch sent a tingle down your spine.

His jaw tightened. "Exactly," he huffed, "I'm resorting to jealousy and child-like banter just to get your attention. Do you see what you're doing to me, Chibi?"

The doors to the gymnasium opened behind you with a loud bang. You heard a committee member call your name. "L/N-chan! We got the projector to work! Do you mind helping us with a test run for the speakers and lights?"

Kunimi frowned. He pulled his hand back and dropped it to his side.

"L/N-chan?" they called again.

His head was turned slightly away and he was staring at the ground through hooded lids with a passive expression on his face.

You blinked and then realized why you hadn't walked away yet. Heck, the projector could combust into flames and ruin all of your preparations but you wouldn't step away because he was embarrassed.

Kunimi was embarrassed.

"You guys can take care of the rest of the preparations," you called over your shoulder. Then, you swallowed your nerves and raised a hand to cup his cheek. His skin was warm and that was when you noticed the pink blush dusting his face.

"What are you doing?" he mumbled catching your stare.

"I'm not ignoring you."

"Smart-ass."

"Jealous wreck."

Kunimi removed your hand off his cheek and intertwined your fingers. He pulled your body and grinned. "I'm still your Kumini."

You couldn't help but snort and hide your face in his chest. "Then I guess I'm still your Chibi."
