Goshiki
Plot: You are insecure about a bad haircut
You stood in front of the mirror and sighed. There was nothing you could do to fix this situation. Only time could help you now. You had to lift your head up and face the reality.
You're beautiful long hair was now cut down to your shoulders. What was worse was the god awful bangs.
They were too short on your forehead, then came down to your eyebrows on the sides.
If your mother hadn't distracted the hairdresser, you wouldn't be looking like this.
Shaking your head, you stepped away from the mirror and grabbed your backpack off the bed. It was time to go to school.
Your classmates stared, they didn't bother to hide their shock. You could hear their whispers.
"Morning!" You heard a cheerful voice proclaim.
Tsutomu Goshiki was your seat mate since the beginning of the school year. He was a good boy, a bit conceited especially when it came to sports, but you didn't mind.
You smiled at him. "I hope you're having a good morning Goshiki-kun."
"Aren't you?" He asked.
You pointed to your bangs and frowned. "This happened. I don't think I'll have a good day for at least a year until my hair grows out again."
His dark eyes swept over your head.
"You look pretty!" He tried to persuade you. "I like your bangs, they make you look cool!"
"Not everyone thinks that."
Throughout the day, your self esteem dropped to 0%.
The boys in your class often complimented you but today they pointed and laughed in their huddled groups. The girls were ever so daring and asked you embarrassing questions.
"Which hairdresser did you go to?"
"Did you cut your own hair?"
"Is this a prank?"
"Why would you do this to your hair?"
You wanted the ground to open up and swallow you alive.
Goshiki tried his best to divert your attention. He drew funny cartoon characters on the corner of your notebook page. He pretended to trip on his way out the classroom.
You humoured him but as soon you looked away, your smile dropped.
"Will you come and watch my practice game tomorrow?" He asked as class was finished for the day. "You should come and see us win."
"I don't think I should leave my house more than I have to."
"Please," he begged. You felt yourself weaken at the expression on his face.
"Alright, I'll be there."

"I wish people would grow up," you complained to your mother. It was after school and you were sitting at the dinner table and completing your homework. "It's like they have nothing better to do than pick on you."
"Well sweetie, that's what most of your teenage years will be like."
"I hate it." Suddenly, you had an idea. "Can I be homeschooled?"
Your mother tried not to smile as she shook her head. "Unfortunately not. Besides, wouldn't you miss your friends?"
"They're not really my friends," you admitted. It was true though, your classmates were people you knew. You talked to them because they were in the same class as you.
It wasn't like you shared any bond or trust with them.
A true friend would find a way to save you from the uncomfortable situation you found yourself in. A true friend, at the very least, wouldn't care how you looked like or how bad your haircut was.
The next day, you entered the gymnasium and went to find a seat close to the court. A few other students had come to watch the team plays, so you shifted lower in your seat and hoped no one would pay you special attention.
It was a little too much to ask for apparently, because as the doors opened for the teams to enter, Goshiki yelled your name loudly and began running towards you.
"Goshiki-kun," you stuttered, your eyes widening, "Goshiki-kun what happened to you?"
He grinned, his dark eyes shining proudly. "We're matching!"
"Oh no," you muttered.
His floppy hair that suited him quite seemed to have been attacked by scissors in the same way that yours was.
His bangs were uneven, short against his forehead and long by the side of his face.
You glanced around. Groups of girls who usually watched the wing spiker with heart eyes were now shocked.
"You did it on purpose?"
"Yes," he grinned.
"But-" you were at a loss for words, "why?"
"You seemed upset about your bangs yesterday. And I know our classmates were teasing you about it too. But I think your bangs are cool so I cut mine to match yours!"
Your heart warmed at his innocence and sincerity. You smiled, a light blush colouring your cheeks.
"Well?" He asked. "Are you still upset?"
His intentions were so pure that you wanted to reach over and hug him. In that moment you realized he wasn't just a classmate anymore. He was your friend.
You could hear the whispers and giggles around the gymnasium as students pointed at the two of you.
You wish they'd just grow up.
But not you, Goshiki-kun, you thought to yourself, please stay like this always.
