Bonus 1
This chapter takes place at Zach and Lilli's wedding and starts with the Roche family driving to Maine.
Josh looked at Shaun as she sighed. "How much longer?"
"Fifteen minutes." The GPS screen displayed their arrival time, but the entire drive had taken longer with traffic.
Shaun looked back. Micah's hands covered his ears as Poppy's whimpers turned into crying. "Tansy, try putting the pacifier in her mouth."
Josh sighed. "If we stop now, we'll be late for dinner."
"I'll need to feed her. We should have thought to bring a bottle."
Josh laughed. "Like she'll take one if you're in a five-mile radius."
At times, he hardly recognized his life. Some days he felt too old to have an infant, but he loved his second daughter as much as his son and Tansy. He and Tansy had a special bond because she chose him. They were friends first, and he was secretly glad she hardly remembered her father. Josh's relationship with Tansy was like Kurt's with Olivia, and their closeness comforted him that he would always be Tansy's dad.
"She spit it out."
"Try again, Peanut. Or try your finger." Josh increased the speed on the cruise control. Although he was a rule follower, most drivers were going faster than the post seventy miles per hour.
Meanwhile Shaun increased the volume of the Kidz Bop channel making Josh want to cry too. By the time, the voice told them their exit was in one mile, Micah was crying louder than Poppy. Shaun looked as frazzled as he felt and their weekend was just beginning. They were staying with three kids in a hotel room.
"Why the hell did Zach decide to get married in Maine?"
Shaun groaned. "Blame Lilli. At least it's a child friendly weekend."
Josh didn't think there was such a thing. He couldn't sip champagne and chase after Micah and Teddy, although neither could Oliver. The two friends were in it together. They would pass Poppy around between his mother and every other guest who would only return her to be fed or changed.
Off the exit, he followed directions. After a turn, the voice said two point six miles on the left. They drove past a marsh making the landscape look very different from Wellesley. Finally, he turned into the inn parking lot and looked at his wife. "You feed her while I pawn them off and check in."
"What's pawn?"
"Come on. It means find someone to watch you, so I can lug everything to our room."
Tansy's dress was wrinkled and Teddy had a juice stain on his shirt. So much for dressing before they left. At least the dinner hosted by Michael and Lois Steele would be at the Inn. The kids would look presentable at the wedding.
"I need to go potty."
"Me too." Tansy spoke Josh's thoughts.
"First stop, bathrooms." Thankfully, he eyed them right off the lobby. "Tans. Meet us right here."
Josh let Micah go into a stall. The inn was too nice for urinals. When they stepped out Tansy was running around with Daphne and Teddy.
Oliver looked at him. "How was the ride?"
Josh ran his hand through his hair. "I need a scotch."
Oliver laughed. "According to Tansy there was screaming the whole time."
"Fifteen minutes not two hours."
"Still. Where is she?"
"Getting what she was crying for. I need to check in and unload. Can you handle them?"
"Yeah. I'll show them the pool."
"Don't let them drown!"
"Lilli lined up a babysitter. Emma and I have agreed to use our room as the kid's room. You get Poppy, we'll take the other two tonight."
"Is there enough room?"
"It's a suite. The boys get the floor."
Things were looking up. A night without talking kids, Josh might get lucky. He loaded up the large baby carriage contraption with all their bags to bring to their room. Oliver was right. It was spacious and beautiful.
Back in the lobby, Shaun handed him the baby. "I have to go potty." He smiled. When had they started talking like four-year-olds?
He followed the sound of voices into the restaurant area. Lois spotted him right away. "Josh, I saw the kids. Where's Shaun?"
"Freshening up. It was a long ride."
Before Lois could respond, his mother appeared. "Let me take her."
As she reached for Poppy, he warned, "She just ate." When he handed her the burp cloth, it was damp. His new cologne was sour milk. Oliver appeared with an extra glass in his hand. Josh grabbed it. "Where are the kids?"
"With the babysitters. Lilli lined up two girls. The kids took to them right away."
As Josh sipped his scotch, he didn't care. He trusted Emma. Shaun appeared and put her arm around him. "Emma texted the babysitters are perfect." She sniffed. "Your shoulder's sour." At least he wasn't wearing a suit. "I'd kill for a drink."
"I'll have an extra for you." He kissed her head before scanning the crowd. The Sumners, Dwyers, Roches, and Steeles were represented. The rest were Lilli's family and friends.
"The view is beautiful." The large glass windows highlighted the salt marsh. At the far end doors opened to a patio with a pool. "Who do you think will skinny dip later?"
Josh laughed. "Zach and Lilli. We should go say hi to Max. I haven't seen him in months or years."
The older Steele brother sat with JJ and Violet looking bored. When he saw them approach, he stood and reached out his hand. "Dex. How are you?"
"Good. When are you finally done?"
"June thirtieth. Less than a year, finally!"
"I heard you want to come back to Boston."
"That's my plan."
"Not New York?" Josh saw Olivia out of the corner of his eye with a lemon drink in her hand.
Oliver may have hatched the plan, but Josh, his loyal sidekick, passed out the hard candies. He gave Zach watermelon because it was the most popular. Sour apple went to JJ, because he was whinny as a kid, so sour fit. He gave Gilly cherry because Josh was old enough to know not to give it to a pubescent boy, but young enough to think about it. Obviously, there would be no negative connotation between brother and sister. Olivia's signature drink was interesting because he gave lemon to Max, who stood in front of him discussing his plans to move further from Olivia.
"No, I'm ready to come home."
Shaun smiled. "It will be nice to have you around."
Max smiled. "I heard you have a new baby."
"She's being passed around. You can get your turn."
Max shook his head. "I'm on vacation."
Josh laughed and patted him on the back before they joined Emma at a table. The lobster dinner was worth the long drive. The kids had their own table with the babysitters and chicken tenders and fries.
Emma said, "Lilli is awesome with kids."
Josh felt old as the younger crew kept drinking. Was it age or fatherhood that made overdoing it at an open bar unappealing? The laughing from the bride and groom's table kept getting louder as the meal progressed.
Emma and Shaun went upstairs with the babysitters to help settle the kids. Shaun planned to feed Poppy. Although they had the carriage, Josh doubted she would end up in it. Even Lilli's mother had held her.
With scotch in hand, Josh and Oliver followed the younger people out to the patio. Shaun returned without their baby and Josh didn't bother to ask who had her. The crowd laughed when Olivia jumped in the pool. Violet's sister, Ainsley, followed her. She wasn't an employee for the weekend. Josh watched Max as Olivia kissed some guy.
Emma leaned in and whispered. "Look at him."
Josh smirked. "He looks poised to jump out of his skin."
"He's been tracking her all night." Leave it to Emma to notice.
"She likes him, but he's moving to Boston."
Emma laughed. "I doubt it's one-sided."
"We were stupid once. Hopefully, they figure it out."
Emma laughed. "I was afraid of Oliver."
Josh laughed. "I remember you crawling out the door."
Shaun said, "Shhh. Watch." Zach and Lilli pulled the girls out of the pool and put towels around them. "He looks jealous of his brother."
Josh whispered, "For years everyone encouraged Zach and Livvy." But along with books, Olivia asked to swim for Max. Josh conceded that a lot of years had passed.
Emma whispered. "We really need to keep an eye on them."
Shaun laughed. "It's more fun than reality TV."
With the sideshow gone, Josh kissed behind Shaun's ear. "Tired."
She giggled. "Let's go find the baby."
Lois had her. "She has red hair. I'm dreaming of dark-haired babies."
Anita said, "Lilli isn't ready. She's still getting her feet wet as an agent."
Josh took Poppy. As they walked away, Shaun whispered, "Let them discuss it on their own."
Josh smiled. "I have more important things on my mind. I hope you're sleepy little princess."
He held her against his shoulder. Being a dad was the best job ever, but his mind was on being a husband.
